Hmm, In every large Corp there is a Video/Conferencing group of some sort. Laptops get hooked up to projectors every day of the week in Corporate America, why not substitute tablet for a laptop where possible? You're not necessarily caring the wrong type of device, just the wrong mindset. Get outside your living room.

I'd use a tablet to "Project" wirelessly.

Airplay is the killer feature.

Agree. Right now, in the pre-4G era, it only makes sense to wirelessly sync tidbits of info like calendar appointments and emails. Not Star Trek and Hawaii Five-0.

Of course, when the real 4G spec is chosen and implemented, we'll be getting 100Mb/sec and presumably it will use very little battery power. Things will be different then, but that won't happen until at least 2012.

(The LTE being rolled out right now is 3.9G at best, since it does not unify voice and data transmission into an all-IP all-packet-switched stream. But fortunately there is an upgrade from basic LTE to LTE Advanced, which does have all-IP technology. And LTE Advanced is one of the candidates for the final 4G spec.)
It's not even 3.9G. 4G is supposed to be 100Mb/s. The "4G" rolling out now is about 1/5 of that. More like 3.2G. :)

My understanding is that Apple is letting anyone use AirPlay streaming in their devices which is why multiple AirPlay speakers are being announced and, allegedly, multiple products are going to be announced at CES that's compatible. It's not a stretch to hope that as more AirPlay compatible products are available that it can become a defacto norm and replacement for a tethered connection.

Thanks for the info.

Will anyone outside of the Apple ecosystem care about it though? No one cared about Facetime or Display Port.

Xd

As an apple lover, Im sorry to say, I CANT WAIT. Also I hope its good so apple has a little motivation to advance the iPad a lot ;)

It might be longer than that:
ITU capitulates, admits that the term '4G' could apply to LTE, WiMAX, and 'evolved 3G technologies

Don't know how much juice the ITU has, but with statements like this what incentive do US carriers have for upping their game quickly after LTE and Wimax is rolled out.

I'd use a tablet to "Project" wirelessly.

Airplay is the killer feature.

A feature that requires another device in between that display/projector to work.
HDMI only requires a cable.

Until Airplay is incorporated directly into TV's and projectors, it will be a niche feature.

Ahh, thank you. You captured the current essence of Airplay!!

A couple of things...

1. To those commenters who peg some Apple Announcement for January:

What's magic about January WRT any Apple announcements? They haven't attended Macworld Expo for a year or more. Why would they have an event to announce something that won't ship for several months?

2. Regarding projectors and the HDMI issue:

A local group to which I belong just bought a new projector from Staples (forget which brand) and it had only a VGA input. We had to pop for an HDMI adapter so our MacBooks could use it.

3. Spec "bullet points":

HP is like many high-tech outfits in that they like to dazzle customers (both enterprise and consumer) with long lists of specious specs that seem to lead people to believe that longer is better. You see this with cameras, computers, Cisco stuff, etc. Of course these spec sheets never reveal the odious and negative aspects such as 1.5 hours of battery life running all those goodies (as others have pointed out here). I'm sure there are some honest reviewers out there who will compare and contrast the so-called iPad killers and their usability with the iPad, including battery life for typical use.

I will address 1 and 2

Who said anything about MacWorld? Apple creates their own events. The speculation about January?

2007 Iphone Annouced

2009 Ipad Announced

(The 2007 event may have been a MacWorld, don't remember, but you get the drift about January)

Where ya been?

Item 2:
We ain't talking Staple projectors, a projector with VGA only is low end. Sorry in advance if that hurts your feelings.

hdmi cable. $Less than 10 bucks
ApleTV. $100
iPad. $600

Wireless airPlay. ..niche product...

Fixed that for ya

Apparently you did not read the previous posts, or get the memo. If you are spending $40 on an HDMI cable, you are getting ripped off.

But those were new products with a pre-announcement. The iPad for example was pre-announced to give some time to get people building apps.

This time there will be no real pre-announcement, they will announce and then ship almost immediately. I doubt they will have less than 1 year life for iPad 1. March-April or even later seems more likely.

That's just speculation, just as others are speculating the opposite.

Except the speculation to the opposite is based on wishful thinking, mine is based on past behavior and logic.

Can you name an Apple product that had a product life of less than a year before a new model??

I did not see the post about a release in January. Point me to it so i can read it.

It has a mini HDMI port, for example, while the iPad requires a special dongle for video output.

You mean kind of like the Mini HDMI to HDMI "dongle" that you'll need to actually connect it to most tvs?

Can someone help me here, why HDMI? Airplay works well and I don't have to have the iPad tethered, and can use it as a remote. Apple TV travels well and works with my iPhone, iPad, and my kids iPods...(yes I actually have all 3). Even my 8 year old loves using the iPad on the big screen.

Its easy to use, involves minimal setup and the whole family can figure it out and I can run optical out to my home theatre.

So why do I want HDMI again?

It is much much simpler and more practical to carry an HDMI cable rather than an Apple TV.

And don't those need a wireless network to communicate? Or can Apple TV and an iPad/iPhone talk directly to each other over airplay?

That's a wire which works with many devices. It's no more a dongle than a USB cable is. If you're gonna argue that HDMI is a dongle, then carrying around an Apple TV is even worse.

I can't not wait to see what they have done with WebOS for a tablet. I think it has the potential to be something I would actually call a computer.

I find WebOS to be intriguing. Don't understand why there are so many negatives on this article. I believe more competition makes for better products. It seems some people want Apple to become the next Microsoft.

having more devices on the market is good, for us, because competition breeds innovation.

I do think WebOS device will mount to anything for a few reasons,

1) apps, Apples and google Apps stores makes life easier.
2) convincing developers to switch to develop for the WebOS, iPhone (Objective C) and Android (Java based) are similar so developing for both is not that difficult.
3) is has HP on it, and HP has not been a major winner in the mobile platform, though over the years they have sure tried with the PDA's.
4) WebOS interface to the PC/Mac is horrible.

on the other hand, Android based devices are more likely be a threat, I welcome the competition.

At last, a powerful device

It better be powered by either a nuclear battery, portable generator or an extra-long extension cord. Or be fast enough to do your 8 hour job in 2 hours, just before the battery drains.
Let's see what happens... :D
