But, I read posts from Huawei fans here about how much they spend on research ...

Probably because they include the “formal program that rewards employees for stealing information, including bonuses that increase based on the confidential value of the information gathered” in their R&D budget.
;)

The only thing that concerns me is our reliance on China to manufacture machinery... They build most of the machines we'd used to manufacture all the crap China makes for us...

So if we pulled out of China right now- we don't have the skill to build the machines that make the crap we are used to in the US.

Yeap, they are the definition of ‘irony’. And don’t forget, this is not just the US, it’s the West, so that’s Europe and other countries too, we are the reason they keep building bigger and bigger container ships.

I believe that Huawei does indeed do some spying of industrial espionage for itself and the Chinese government, but I also wonder how many in the west do the same?

Lol at all the people bending over backwards to justify what Huawei has done here.

And they call me the mindless fanboy for defending Apple. Guess anything beats admitting that the companies they were championing are not exactly the paragons of innovation they were making them out to be.

You literally could not give me a Huawei product to use. Wouldn’t even turn the thing on. It’s a shame that US business has relied on cheap Chinese labor for so long.

That seems like a bit much. I'd take one for free just to play around with it. It wouldn't become my primary device. I certainly wouldn't log into anything or use any existing accounts like email or banking. Anything that required an account would get new ones setup just for that device. But I'd play around with it. Same as I did with the free Android tablet I got a few years back. It didn't replace my iPad, but it was nice to visit the other side for a while. It just confirmed that I prefer my Apple products.

Huawei is a mess...i still believe they were one of the companies who stole Samsung's foldable display technology. They would take a piece of bread from a starving kid if it would benefit them!!!

FYI.

Not that I care about defending Huawei or anyone else but all this propaganda is around 50% as credible as what you would get in North Korea's opinion about USA. And tell the fanboys that you can take your fraternities out of here, this is not supposed to be a US-only forum where the rest of the world is the enemy.

Yes, this does seem a bit excessive. A company-wide program to reward stealing information???

Give me a break.

The iPhone and generally any flagship Android costs $650+. The manufacturing cost for each unit is $320-440 USD. On the one hand, Huawei's no different, but the reality is they are deep in corporate espionage. They recently got caught in a separate sting where they stole glass tech from a company that was or still is developing glass for smartphones to rival Corning's Gorilla Glass. This new glass uses a different manufacturing method and man-made diamond.

Cost to manufacture is both components and a portion of R&D. They're only paying for components and tooling time. The rest is pure cash. And because Huawei is deep in corporate espionage, we don't truly know how much they've stolen from other companies and keeping it in their back pocket for later use.

The Department of Justice doesn't tell me anything ("Tappy"? really?). Not that China/Huawei are saints but it is clear that the whole thing is part of a bullying. And why on earth the world (we are not just talking about USA) must be forced to use Cisco/Intel/Google/Apple etc instead of something else ? Because those are more FBI/NSA compliant ?

This happens a lot throughout the tech industry, actually.
In the US, would like to see evidence of large companies regularly stealing trade secrets. Huawei is famous for it though. They did the same with Cisco in the 80s and 90s.

More evidence to never buy a trash product from that trash company.
100% this company should be banned in every way from doing business with the US. We've been letting them screw with us for decades, and they're very tied in with the Chinese govt.

No it is quite common. In training we were given numerous examples and taught what to watch for, and I saw many attempts when I was interviewing.

I see alot of these stories at the moment like
CHINA=BAD
USA=GOOD
and i cant help thinking that its propaganda! i mean why now? maybe tradewar?

It's been like this forever. And it's because China is actually bad. Unless I can find something showing that the news about them putting Muslims into internment camps is bogus...

I don’t see “USA equals good” anywhere.

China steals industrial secrets. It’s been going on a long time and there have been stories about it for a long time. This is not an “at the moment” thing.

While it wasn't entirely clear, I presumed the point of your post was imply that we shouldn't believe everything we read. Which is great advice. So I provided a link straight from the horses mouth as it were. A source independent from "The Information" or their influence. As I said, FYI. What you choose to do with that information is your choice.

Regardless of what you do or don't believe, it would seem the DoJ is taking them to court on multiple charges.

Dont get me wrong im not a big fan, and im not saying that this story is not true, but why are they comming now?
but then again where are the iPhones made?

Huawei is just an evil company backed by the evil China government. I don't believe they would spend to research and innovate. Stealing is much faster and easier. I will never use any of their products. FYI HongKongese here.

Exactly, what's Huawei has and US company doesn't? The answer is the dominance of #1 spot in leading 5G teach. Steal this which US hasn't got. It's like someone steal teach from you, but you know they are behind in tech and patent. Until one day that person come up with tech which you no longer can compete. You start yelling at everyone else saying " this guy steal from me before". US keep saying Huawei network equipment has security back door. Give me a break, has one one ever question cisco? Ask the CIA, they all as dirty as the commies.

I agree with you but the Chinese you just need to give them a damn lesson! They are screwing around the world as if they owe everything! The evilest nation on this planet has to be the Chinese. Earth will be a much better place without them.
