Exactly my point, it interferes with user experience!

Can you please explain exactly how the extended ears are going to interfere with your user experience when watching video. An example of what ratio film would interfere with your experience the most would be even more helpful.

S8 is too awkward to type on as I don't want it edge-to-edge. I experienced it already with Sharp Aquos and S7e. Essential has a terrible camera, no water-resistance, and isn't as round. The X seems more ergonomic with enough side bezels to comfortably type on.

Jokes calling it top notch, notcho phone, unibrow, dead pixels, ears, devil horns, etc will subside over time. Many of us saw this notch many, many months ago. It was rumored to be called iPhone X and have OLED like 18+ months ago.

Remember when Gizmodo leaked the iPhone 4? So many people called it ugly hoping it was fake. Seven years later, it's the most influential design of this decade and people praise it. People get used to things.

I don't mind the notch because it gives the X a unique distinction similar to what Essential Phone has. It's why I want the silver iPhone X over space gray because many others will know you are holding an iPhone X from afar since space gray hides the vertical camera hump better.

It would be cool if the notch was a second display and act like a Touchbar.

Unique distinction

I think the notch is an odd necessity for the modern technology in the device. The thing I don't care for is the way the notch interferes with videos. I would much rather have had Apple go ahead and letterbox the notch portion of the display during video playback.

They should’ve just made the top bar black so people don’t confuse umm sensors as a notch.

It’s visually jarring to have 3 flat edges and then 2 tangs or one notch not to mention this provides one more version of they app they need to produce specifically because of the ears or notch.

App developers don’t have to do anything to accommodate the ears or notch. UIKit does literally almost all the work for them if they are already using the proper API’s and such they’ve had access to for many years now.

The “notch” doesn’t interfere with videos unless you specifically double tap to zoom.

Tim Cook said during the presentation that there was no room on the ears for a bluetooth icon, so they had to remove bluetooth from the phone completely. However they are hoping to fix this in software so you can choose to have either bluetooth active or wifi active but not both at once.

am i reading this correctly?
so apple watch goodbye until software fix and then u gotta choose between wifi or the watch?

no offense but do you have a clip of this being said because it sounds kind of bogus

Thanks for clarifying.

He is taking the piss I think

Here's my opinion on what doesn't look weird and is aesthetically better.
I'd preffer square even corners on the screen.
The outer border of the hardware the rounded corners are good and eye pleasing.
Having no bezel is not really important to me and most users out there.
I'd rather have some bezel to touch and hold the device from when viewing video or other things in landscape full screen mode. And to have the needed hardware there for ear speaker, front camera and various sensors.

i made a render showing various suggestions.
i think yours would be the iteration on the far right:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/alternate-x-designs-per-mr-users.2079241/

it makes the phone really tall if you also feel the dimensions of the screen should be the same as the X is specced at (with no notch or rounded corners)

The notch makes part of the 5.8” screen unusable plus covers part of the media when using the phone in landscape mode.

Makes part of what 5.8” screen unusable? The one you created in your head so you could get angry about part of it being stolen?
Show me a bezelless phone and I’ll understand.

I like the middle version the best.

Whatever design that doesn’t have a notch sticking into whatever media I’m viewing is a better design imo.

I can show you a long list of notchless, real world examples of rectangle shaped, tangible items that most people would have complaints about if you’re looking for an item to view media on.

This thread reminds me of the “you’re holding it wrong” mentality.

I want to use/view ALL of the 5.8” screen

Interesting.
What is the purpose of the bottom bezel though?
I know the top is for the ear speaker and sensors.
And the bezels on that look double the size of the notch cut out.
I was thinking more of the 4th one in.
Or the far right one by removing the bottom bezel and reducing the top bezel in half.

Which is basically a big ‘no’ to my question. Are there any phones without a top and bottom bezel, other than the iPhone X?

So you want the notch removed and replaced with a bezel above the screen? Or just a phone with no front camera?

why so extreme? they go from excessive bezel to no bezel.

the s8 has bezel still and its not that noticeable in normal usage.

I’m trying to understand the mentality that the notch has somehow ‘removed’ screen that would otherwise be there.

the larger bezels are needed in order to have square corners on the display.. using the one on the right as example-- if you moved the top bezel down, the corners will start getting cut away by the roundness of the frame's corners.

the fourth one in -- that has the fully round corners on the bottom part of the display and slightly rounded corners on the top part of the display.. (no square corners on any part of the display and differing roundness between the top&bottom)..

if you're open to accepting some roundness in the corners, there's a version not shown in the rendering which could be slightly taller (by the amount of the notch), rounded corners, and still have the full length/width dimensions of iPhone X display except no notch.. this might be the version you would like best.

but yeah, when desiring to keep the display corners sharp 90º, you'll end up with tall bezels due to that requirement (unless, the frame of the phone had 90º corners too.. then you could put the display real close to all edges without rounding the corners)

Yes, now that Im looking at it again the 4th one in would be great.
But with the bottom 4 icons not cut out on the bottom.

It’s not just video but the whole experience. When I look at a screen that is all I want to see, a screen and not some foreign object getting in the way. For those who don’t mind it , you are gifted because I definitely am still baffled at why Apple went with such a controversial design!

Exactly, simple and very well put.

[doublepost=1508603817][/doublepost]Hell yeah, send a copy of that to Apple also please :D
I want that in my life in the near future.
Now if they could figure out how to put touch ID also inside that screen without a bezel on the bottom would be great.
But I know Im asking for too much :D

that's an easy modification to make on the model.. i'll make a rendering of that version a little later today.

I’m trying to understand the mentality that the notch has somehow ‘removed’ screen that would otherwise be there.

Is the iPhone x advertised to have a 5.8" screen? Yes

Is part of that 5.8" covered by a notch? Yes.

The full screen, 5.8" media viewing experience looks like this because "the notch has somehow ‘removed’ screen that would otherwise be there."

This logic only applies if you consider the screen on the iPhone to be a 5.8" screen. Plus nobody enjoys viewing media with a notch on the side like that.

This iphone has a thin bezel, it's not "edge to edge".

I have an issue with the notch impacting my ability to use ALL of the advertised 5.8" screen. Sure make the bezel slightly thicker at the top or phone bigger to move the sensors out of the primary viewing area.

That notch removes a third of previously touchable, usable screen space on top of just being visually jarring.

I imagine some product manager with amazing salesman skills sold the notch as a feature but in reality just really needed 5 new features to complete this quarter and only had 4.

Ok, I get it, so your issue is that Apple are using the “5.8inch” descriptor for the screen?
Fair enough, it’s misleading, but I can see why they say that rather than say “5.2inch and then some extra bits that stick up”.

fwiw..

the rectangular dimension of the X's pixel Length*Width will give you a larger diagonal than 5.8"..

however, Apple is speccing the phone at 5.8" diagonal since there's some loss of content due to the non-rectilinear shapes.. if you took all of the available pixels on the X and reshaped them into a rectangle at similar aspect ratio, you'd find the spec'd 5.8" diagonal..

idk, if you ask me, the diagonal system of speccing a display should go away.. for one, it's completely misleading but for two, more and more phones aren't using true rectangles therefore a diagonal measurement isn't even possible.. there isn't a corner point to measure from.

----
but my point is-- Apple is speccing at 5.8" and you'll be able to use all of the advertised space.. if they were being shiesty about it, they'd spec the diagonal at 5.9" (which is what the diagonal would be if using the pixel dimensions as a true rectangle.. then rounding up from 5.86")

That notch removes a third of previously touchable, usable screen space on top of just being visually jarring.

So if Samsung extended their screen upwards into the top bezel on the Note 8b, to avoid having dead space to the left and right of the camera/speaker, you would feel that the screen had been reduced in size?

So if Samsung extended their screen upwards into the top bezel on the Note 8b, to avoid having dead space to the left and right of the camera/speaker, you would feel that the screen had been reduced in size?

IF samsung advertised a certain size screen as a feature or selling point then added 2 "notches" that extended up from the advertised screen size, then in that specific, hypothetical scenario, I would not consider that a reduced screen size. One might say, based on apples logic, that the notches actually increase the screen size.
