I feel bad for the 8 and 8 Plus owners

I just got back from the Apple store and picked up an 8 Plus. Gorgeous! I love it, please don't feel bad for me. I'm a happy camper. 🙂

I'm upgrading iOS right now and will do a restore in a few minutes.

I played with the X while I was there. Very nice phone, looked great and I enjoyed using it. But my heart belongs to the Plus and thus I shall stick with it for the next year. If an X Plus comes out next year, I'll definitely consider it.

For me it came down to the 8 Plus' screen ratio as I did not care for the X's taller and skinnier screen. But I think both phones are great and I'm glad we all have a choice.

I originally planned on buying an 8 and let the X users beta test the phone but that was more trying to convincing myself that I didn't want the X. I just played with one in stores and it is unequivocally the best iPhone Apple has ever made. The feel is extremely premium and the screen is so good that it looks fake, as if the icons are stickers on the screen.

Then I planned on buying a used 7 to hold me over for the XS but the iPhone X doesn't feel like a beta product, it feels like a flagship product.

Never got why X owners feel superior? We're all in the same fleet. The 8+ is a flagship product, the X is a flagship product. Together they make a great selection of phones. I don't justify my 8+ because I don't have to and I'm not going to... I bought the phone for me, not for other people and what works for me probably isn't going to work for others because I'm a fairly weird person, or so I'm told.

Plus next September they will launch a new and polished X2 at a regular price point. Avoiding gen 1 products is something you learn through experience. Folks should have learned from the Apple Watch product.....

Agreed. I'm not missing Animojis and burn-in one bit. All my apps work just fine and don't need to be updated to work either. I'll wait for a polished product.

Everybody?? I returned my X. I didn't enjoy it. Theres plenty here that love their Gen 1 product. Have you read some of the replies here? Or read the threads about all the people returning their X's?

The notch. OMG, the notch! Hate, hate, hate. It's like it's stuck in my brain.

The notch messes up app interfaces. Developers are trying to find a way of dealing with the notch, but it’s awkward, and any app updated for iPhone X looks worse.

iPhone X screen in practice (repeat: in practice) is significantly narrower and therefore functionally smaller because of aspect ratios. So a Netflix movie or a photo or YouTube video will be significantly smaller on the iPhone X.

On apps such as calendars, you simply see less as the right edges are cut off, so there is less text, and these are apps that have been updated for iPhone X! For example, Pocket Informant and Calendars 5.

Face ID is okay when it works. But it only works sometimes. Conditions have to be perfect, especially lighting. And it’s slow. When it doesn't work, you have to enter your password. Touch ID works 100% of the time and it’s instant.

The screen is supposed to be so much better on the iPhone X. Well, I can't see it. Yes, you can just about tell if you compare screens side by side, but the difference is so slight it’s not worth it.

Harsh tinny sound on the iPhone X. Loud, sure, but not enough bass. Audio is deeper and better on the 7 Plus. Not much has been said about this, which surprises me. I would like to know if others share my perception. Perhaps I had a faulty unit.

The status bar doesn't show percentage battery remaining, because of the damn notch. Stupid! You have to swipe down to see the percentage. Unacceptable! I expect that Apple will fix this. It's an easy fix.

The status bar doesn't show the Do Not Disturb moon symbol, because of the damn notch. You have to swipe down to see the symbol. So you may have DND switched on, but not realize it. Unacceptable! Easy to fix.

Deleting apps with the swipe up gesture is slow and awkward. I expect that Apple will fix this too,

Using the wireless charging pad is nice. But, if you pick up the phone to use it, it stops charging. With a wire, you can use it while its charging.

I wanted to love the X, but I didn't. I really hated it. No real benefits at all. How is Face ID which works most of the time a benefit if Touch ID works perfectly all of the time? Just negative compromises, with the notch being the worst. Different doesn't mean better. It seems like a regression in many ways. It's a joy to be using the 7 Plus again.

I read most the replays on here, and everybody differs in what they prefer for a device. There is no right or wrong answer. Who cares if its a GEN one product or not, it doesn't make the iPhone X any less successful a product, it only matters what the user appreciates. The iPhone X and iPhone 8 are both great devices in their own respects.

It feels like a first prototype and a good basis for the future. Except for the notch, I think it will all work out okay, because Apple will make software changes in response to consumer criticisms. I think the notch is just a plain terrible idea. Apple is taking the anti-bezel campaign too far: design is defeating functionality The stuff in the notch should be in a thin bezel, not part of and interfering with the screen. Apple needs to DITCH THE NOTCH. Also I hope Apple retains Touch ID as an option along with Face ID.

For this year model of the OLED and Face ID screen, I would say it has a lot a teething problems. Apple will work it out next year, and the years after, but this year I’m glad I stayed with the tried and true iPhone 8 Plus. Very good screen, large enough for those that like the Wider version, not having the notch as well is a plus for me though, I will probably get used to it the follow on version next year and a better Face ID I hope. I made the right choice even though it’s about the same cost as the X.

Of all the reasons to go with an 8 Plus, the wider screen is definitely a good one. Maybe the only thing I don’t like about my X is the narrower screen.

I don't see the point in attempting to start a needless debate about the 8 Plus vs the X. Just this past week I decided to go back to Verizon and was in store playing with both phones. I then continued doing my research and found that there are in fact issues with Face ID. That's not to say it's so poor that you shouldn't buy the X, but I guess for me the X really feels like a great concept that is yet to get that usual Apple "polish". I went with the space gray 8 Plus and truly couldn't be happier! So don't feel bad for 8/8 Plus owners- we have the tried-and-true design with most of the benefits of the X. 🙂

Same, any Android vs iPhone threads --- I'll stay far away. Even if I try to be fair, I'll respond to someone who gets their post deleted then I'll get a warning or something. So minus this post, I stay far away from all the Android members here who love to ... dangit, I'll stop now.


I specifically went with the 8+ because of the bigger phone, better battery life, and touch id. I came from a 6s+ so I am enjoying the additional camera and wireless charging.

I came from the 6s Plus as well. But have the X. Guess what I was able to do today? Use my phone one handed and type too! It’s been a long time coming! Love the size of the phone!

Faster, better battery life, heavier, much better camera, and I really like the digital button. I kinda wish I would have waited for the X but ... I'm happy with the 8+. No way I could do the 8+ with one hand. 🙂

My coworker has an X and I'm very impressed - even before he brings it up to use it, it's unlocked and the screen looks nice. It does feel heavy but I think my 8+ is a little heavier.

They won't incorporate both together. Obviously Face ID is there a new form of security and they are abandoning touch ID altogether. Actually, it was stated in an interview with Craig Federighi that they experimented with touch ID under the display and Face ID, but Face ID was there ultimate goal once it was successfully Working.

I beg to differ considering this is an OLD Samsung OLED panel from the S6. Apple could always pay a bit more and move to the better S8/Note 8 Panel.

DisplayMate labeled several displays "best" in undated reviews. Kind of a dumb approach. But if you look at the details, each are better or worse in different categories. Apple was top on calibration, which in my opinion has little value on a phone. Calibration is important for photo editing prior to printing. Bottomine is they are all excellent displays so not worth arguing about the minimal differences.

so is the iPhone X beta phone then. We all know a better and more refined version will come out next year with the bugs worked out. Faster better Face ID recognition, more apps supporting the X. Better battery life because it will be better optimized.
