what I am saying is SO what if apple doesnt win the tablet race ???
does the mac have more sales then the PC globaly ??? No .. Do we see people talking about the doom of apple because of that ???

Why all the hate ?? i am not saying that iOS is perfect ... Not by a long shot.
But it seems that everytime a new tablet comes ... Its the ipad killer ... Just look at the Galaxy tab ...
wow did the people who bought that get the shaft big time ...
no honeycomb for them ... Plus after 4 months they are releasing a new version of the tab with better cameras ...

So you going the Android way ? If so good luck to you
android honeycomb looks like a really good OS, but I can tell you this ... After 5months or so down the road with Android ... You will probably be going to the Android forums to bitch about something else ... Because there is no such thing as a perfect platform ... The grass is always greener over the fence ... When you get there .... Its an other story

But whatever you chose, its because its best for you as a costumer :)

Hey no hard feelings, just trying to rationalize the purchase of a new gadget, doesn't mean that I need to throw my iPad away. Although, my kids are having more fun with it and the Angry Birds than myself.:D

No hard feelings at all my good man :)
Glad to see you aint one of those young kids coming here acting like they are all that ;)

Cheers :)

You stating that doesn't make it true. Proof or it's not true.

What would you like me to prove?

Google makes 98% of their revenue from advertising.

Might be down to 97%.

Google's Admob is in iPhone apps and they still make money on search, so the fact that iPhone users generate 3x the web traffic as Android users is good for Google. And, of course, the default search engine on the iPhone is still Google.

App sales are inconsequential to Google's revenue, especially considering all indications are that not many people actually pay for apps from the Android Market.

"paid content just doesn’t work on Android."

Anything else?

Android officially is more popular than iPhone now, and that trend is continuing.

Windows is more "popular" than Mac OS X but that doesn't really mean anything... Google's Android can be on more phones because it's free and "open" but i'll still stay with iOS, I prefer quality over quantity although I have to say Google has done a really good job.

And you say it's more popular because in the US more people have it, but for example in Colombia, South America, Android hasn't even arrived, and millions of iPhones have been sold thought the past years.

What I find amusing is that there's the notion that there is a one-fit tool that meets everyone's needs.

Some people need/want Android, and others are fine with iOS. The same applies to OSX v W7--different strokes for different folks. Don't expect the iPad to just disappear somehow, especially when you're comparing an unreleased product versus an almost last generation product.

Personally though I hope Honeycomb is all that it is cracked up to be, so that Apple can stop being proverbially lazy in their development.

You are fooling yourself. From very limited choice of hardware, to limited choice of software, to non-existing enterprise presence (so OS/X at home - Windows at work) OS/X small market share in general makes for miserable experience for any users who want to use OS/X for anything more than a web browsing and some simple office tasks.

Lack of enterprise support, fair enough. But in the last few years, more and more software is being made for OS X. Virtualisation means you don't have to compromise by sticking with a windows machine. Time to update your view of OS X' presence in the software market because many software houses already have.

I'm sure everything I could say has been said in this thread. But I lol'd when I read the thread topic. That is all.

You guys forget the best points of the iPad:

1. Apple in-person tech support.

2. Contractless data access (good luck Motorola).

3. Legendary reputation.

4. Accesseries.

If I had to go Android for a tablet however, I'd get the XOOM for sure just for the 10" 10 hour battery (claimed) life.

*Right now* you are absolutely correct.

In three years? Who knows?

Apple has been a bit lazy with OS upgrades, imo, and the gap is widening between them and other mobile OS manufacturers.

I'm not sitting here saying "OMG Motorola Xoom will outsell iPad and Apple will be out of business!", instead I'm saying that... Honeycomb is Google's *first* foray into the tablet market, officially, and it's damned impressive right off the bat. Apple should be careful with their response to that.

Honeycomb is in beta!! A full demo of it is not available. We shall see in a few months ( probably april or may).

Industry is just catching up. Apple knows this. Apple is secretive! Surprise is on the horizon. Who knows what innovation may come from Apple next!!

Seriously pleople ... Get over the fact that Android is now more popular than iOS ... WHO CARES, we have good hardware and software from apple, thats all that matters. Now for all the people that want iOS to be this open OS, well go to Android once and for all and stop coming here on these forums to bitch about it, no one cares and apple really dont care about how you bitch about it.

Do you really think that its all doom and gloom for apple because of honeycomb ? no way !!!

How can you people actually judge honeycomb OS versus iOS ?? ... Oh yeah I forget ... Some of you are sherlock holmes and watch the honeycomb videos none stop about it and without even trying it by yourself ... You are an expert.

For the last time if you dont like iOS please please leave us alone and get unto the Android bandwagon and stop bitching about it.

Is that you Steve Jobs? :D

I can see in my mind Steve screaming with a red face these exact words in the Cupertino headquarters. Funny! :D

Okay! It does look nice! It appears to be better at organization and personalization. However, it lacks content! iPad has been out for 8 months. Developers make the iPad awesome! Honeycomb is awesome because the engineers made it so. It is more complicated, though. Busy! I am a nerd and so I like it, but it is not meant for old people. "old people or not a nerd" would not like it much or newbies. Aside from that, iPad is already awesome and have no issues. Why have two devices that do the same! Motorola Xoom might be nice. Not sure how well it will perform till is in the market. Notification is better with honeycomb, but it is not a deal breaker. The 3d map is nice but still not a deal breaker. iPad 2 will more than likely be a dual core, too. So, graphics will be better as well. iPad 2 will work better with my iPhone 4 and macbook pro. So, honeycomb is not important to me.

I want to buy one now...

...oh dear, you can't get honeycomb on any tablet right now, nothing in the shops.

No point having any of this discussion if it's not even available.

No hardware, No Honeycomb. No Competition for Apple at all.

END OF.

Or PERIOD.

We're in the middle of CES, yet the biggest news, is Verizon's supposed iPhone event on Tuesday.
I'm guessing a bona fide, CDMA(possibly LTE?) iPad as well.
That means nothing to me, being in the UK, but it just shows how Apple dominates the tech news.
Honeycomb looks all fancy, but it'll look confusing to the average consumer, whose numbers(I guess) outweigh those of the tech geek, by 10/1.

Basically, iOS will reign supreme for a good time to come.
In pure feature terms, iOS has always lagged behind. Nokia's N95 blew the original iPhone away in features, but lacked the implementation in like-for-like features. If that's what you mean in having "it's arse kicked", then I guess you're right, as it's always been the case.

Being in the UK also (we should team up!!!) :D

I must admit to being baffled why the iPhone4 which has been out since middle last year being available on just another network would even make the news.

In the UK if the iPhone was only on the 02 network and then 6 months later it was on Orange, or Vodaphone, then it would be like "oh ok" and that's it.

Wow, so the same phone it going to be available on a different network. Big whoop de do.

Fist of all, watch this video from the Verizon press conference at CES: Honeycomb Preview

Now compare this with the iPad in terms of the OS alone. There's a lot of app-specific functionality that is better for one or the other (such as google maps for Honeycomb, iBooks for iOS), but that's not really part of the OS.

1) Home screen: Honeycomb > iOS

Why: Search button. Honeycomb has a legitimate desktop with customizable content. Optional widgets (that actually look really handy, re: gmail/calender widget). Shortcuts to much more than just apps. For the fanboys: if you think the iOS home screen is "all you need", well the Honeycomb home screen can be just app icons too.

2) Browser: Honeycomb > iOS

Why: Honeycomb has actual tabbed browsing and can optionally support flash.

3) Multitasking: Honeycomb > iOS

Why: Both use fast-app switching. Honeycomb shows a vertical list of thumbnails with the current app state (seriously, watch the video, it looks fantastic).

4) Notifications: Honeycomb > iOS

Why: You know why.

Considering that the functionality of both OSes are pretty similar, Honeycomb is clearly a class above iOS. Google really changed parts of Android so that certain functions work more appropriately for a tablet. iOS on the iPad is identical to iOS on the iPhone.

If you have followed the development of iOS thus far, you will also know that iOS 5 will not bring enough improvements to match what Honeycomb has already demonstrated (Apple tends to add only 1 or 2 major features per release).

That said, the iPad (2) will still sell spectacularly. It's built well, has amazing battery life, has the fully-developed app store, and is perceived well by consumers. It will sell well because it's the easy choice and most people are familiar with it. While it's clearly out-classed by Honeycomb, it's still at least 90% as good so it's other strengths will make up the difference.

Bottom line: Honeycomb is better than iOS 4, will be better than iOS 5, but the iPad (2) will still be the most popular and best-selling tablet of 2011. Guess that means everybody wins, right?

This a great post, thank you.

The only thing I disagree with is Honeycomb automatically being better than iOS5. It's *very* likely that it will be, it all depends on how motivated Apple feels I guess.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
1995 called, it wants its Mac vs. PC argument back.

Are you seriously saying that OS X (no slash, btw) is only useful for browsing the web and word processing / spreadsheets?

If so, you're an idiot. I know we're not supposed to call people names, but honestly... You have no idea what you're talking about, and you should go home and let the adults talk now.

Sure, just like the iPad was gonna be a colossal failure, said the h8trs last year. How many iterations of supposed iPod and iPhone killers have been left rotting in the roadway gutters?

And Motorola is hardly the beacon of innovation. What "hot" product have they had in the last decade beside the RAZR? And they couldn't even capitalize on that other than putting the guts in different skins. Color me unimpressed and doubtful.

+1 every time something comes out we always get this iPhone/iPad killer threads. It all comes down to user experience and users are happy with Apple.

Even if it was better... At the end of the day, nobody cares about Android. It could be 5x more powerful, but it would go unnoticed because it's not iPad. People like IOS, iTunes, App Store and the whole Mac Experience. Nobody's running out to switch to Toshiba.

Has anyone seen Apple's stock lately? You're lying to yourself if you think any of these guys stand a chance. Only geeks and broke people buy these A-Pads.

I disagree. People seem to like Android a lot and the proof is that Android is now the number 1 OS for smartphones. (in market share).
Apple will definitely bring a great iOS 5 release that will play great with the new iPad that is soon coming.

Dream on. These are all wanna-be, copy-cat, way after the fact products. They love to toss out the specs, but when the rubber hits the road, they won't even come close. And if you're so happy about it, what may I ask are you doing here? Just curious. I love my iPad. Not looking at anyone other than Apple. Ever. Period.

People like iTunes?

You obviously know different people to me.
Most the people I know hate iTunes and the way your Apple mobile devices are locked into using it.

Yes, the software and the selection is good, but not lock down.

Note: There are many more that don't like or want the "Whole Mac Experience" than do.

I just used an Android 2.2 tab and it was buggy and lacking.

Yes same here; except, I have used almost all of them. I have used the PlayBook - since it's in a very early stage I won't comment about it but Galaxy and others sure are buggier/laggier compared to the iPad. There is something different with Apple's software/hardware engineering and I like it.
