My criterion for upgrade: the new A6X chip. No new chip, no upgrade.

In case the A6X made its way to the release this time, I doubt there will be a new release next March.

Yep, if the tweaked iPad has the A6X I'll upgrade. And if that happens, I bet you're right about nothing happening in the spring.

I doubt I will be upgrading at this refresh. I'm happy with the current iPad 3 and I don't live in an area of the UK that will get LTE anytime soon (1 rumour is that it will have 4G support for the uk).

Since my iPad 3 is working great, a refreshed version doesn't interest me. I'd rather wait and see what the iPad 4 has to offer.

This. There's nothing I'm really missing at the moment on my iPad, and I still have plenty of space left. I might also skip the 4gen, unless it comes with something that would offer a major improvement to my work flow.

You knew what? It's a RUMOR! Nothing concrete.

There are differences between "just rumors" and rumors that are backed by logic, convincing arguments, and strong evidences.

We'll discuss this again next Tuesday :)

There. This is the right attitude towards an update. It's good for you.

It's pretty f-cked up that a 7 month old device is outdated already.

Apple has traditionally updated its computer line twice a year. Thats approx every 6 months. This is nothing new to them, nor any other electronics manufacturer.

People need to read other news articles, the Mini iPad will have the iPad 2 screen resolution and NO RETINA screen eventually it will have it, few years from now, then it might eat in to the 10" iPad sales, Apple will just increase re prices on the mini by £10-20 to recoup the loss

I can't believe how much people on here suck up rumours. I guess it's fitting for a site like this.

Come on... Apple won't update the iPad 3 right now. They release an updated iPad once every year. Why am I certain and know for sure Apple won't update the iPad 3 right now until about 1 year has passed since the last update? 3 reasons:

1. Because Apple wants to make money.
2. They have a well established update cycle that they've never really deviated from on either the iPad or the iPhone: updates once a year or slightly over a year but never early.
3. R&D and time-to-market.

What does making money have to do with NOT updating the iPad? One word: manufacturing. Apple is a big company now and they depend on economies of scale to make money off of their hardware. Remember, Apple is one of the very few companies in the tech industry who turns a profit, and a very large one, on their hardware. This IS Apple's business model, not low margin junk and software giveaways.

And with all of the R&D they pour into each product/update... they aren't just going to say... ok, let's cut this one short this time and release a new updated iPad early! Making these products is hard. They barely make it in time and lots of stuff ends up being last minute because of how much work it is to create a new product or update one. You have to design design design. Develop develop develop. Test test test. And then you have to get your parts suppliers and manufacturing in order. And then you have to retool your machines and get your assembly line going. And then train the assemblers and QA team, etc. Apple's right now struggling to keep up with iPhone demand.

No, no... there will not be an iPad 3 update and there will likely not be an iPad Mini: it's just speculation. This upcoming event will likely be about the Mac Mini and MacBook Air, among a few other things... But an iPad Mini is still a possibility. But no iPad 3 update.

Apple's just making a bunch of controlled leaks right now to make a lot of noise to take the thunder away from Microsoft and their Surface.

You sound pretty confident with yourself but I couldn't help but laugh the entire time I was reading your post. I think Tuesday your going to have your foot in your mouth.

I just picked up my ipad 3 two days ago and I will for sure return and exchange if they refresh to a lightning connector.

The point that people are missing when they stress the fact that Apple usually stick to its annual update cycle is that, the so-called new iPad is not the true update that apple intended for iPad 2: it was forced upon apple precisely by its traditional annual update cycle, together with people's expectation to have retina equipped iPads. The necessary technologies simply weren't ready then. Even now we still have rumors about the retina display, that is the Igzo version, not being ready for mass production.

If apple updates the iPad line with A6X and a better retina screen now, we would have the true upgrade from iPad 2. Technically we are more than half a year behind the annual upgrade circle, instead of being 4 months ahead of it, as many people have claimed.

This post has zero value. All you say is "laugh at you" yet you have zero support to back up your certainty that Apple will update the iPad 3. By doing so, they break their established and firm 1 year update cycle that they've never deviated from on these products.

Listen to yourself. How you twist and turn reality to suit your position.

The iPad 3 is a breakthrough. The pixel density is incredible. They did it yet preserved battery life and increased performance.

You: it's all about specs.
Apple: it's a blend of R&D and innovative hardware that works together with software to create a breakthrough product. Apple doesn't have to use quad core this and 2 GB RAM that in their iDevices because they're incredibly efficient and outperform everything on the market in doing so. It's low power. It's battery life. It's heat. And these things dictate what they allow to run in terms of software and what hardware they choose.

There is no half this and 4 months behind that. The iPad 3 is simply unmatched and will be for quite some time. And in March-May next year the iPad 4 will be released. And it will also be a breakthrough. Thinner. Lighter. Faster.

Look at every other tablet out there. None of them can even touch the Retina display. It's embarrassing. In fact, the second best tablet out there in terms of usability and performance is the iPad 2.

No, there won't be any updates to the iPad 3. No lightning connector. No spec bump. No anything.

The "little something to show you" will be about the MacBook Air and the Mac Mini. And there is a possibility it will also be about an iPad Mini, but I doubt this. If not for anything else like crap usability being a tweener that it would fragment iOS.

It's not all about specs, but specs sure are important, don't you agree? And how about the extra size and weight, and the excessive heat? Does that sound like something that apple would typically like? The current retina is amazing, there is no doubt about that. But what are the byproducts of the amazing display? Answer: all of the shortcomings that I mentioned above.

I don't want to say anything more offensive, but you are the person who are twisting facts to suit your position.

Regarding your arguments based on Apples wish to make money and its r and d cost and time to market: did you actually do research on these subjects? If you did, you should be able to make more profound arguments based on numbers. Otherwise you are just imagining things. Using these as your arguments is just laughable.

What is your point? Please point out the flaws and major problems in the iPad 3 that Apple must rush updates to the market, retool their machines, confuse their existing customer base, all because "specs matter" in the hopes of selling more because 17 million units quarterly sales is crap and the current iPad 3 substandard? That it's basically a broken product so they must throw in a new processor, a lightning connector, and an IGZO display.

The iPad 3 is what it is. It's not perfect but neither is anything. It's the best tablet on the market by a long shot and Apple will not touch it. They will get their year of sales out of it, milking it for profits with their economies of scale. This is Apple's business model: make money on the hardware. After 1 year on the market, they'll have had enough time to go through their well established product lifecycle and R&D/product development process of designing, developing, testing, and manufacturing yet another iPad bringing it to market.

The iPad 4 will be yet another improvement. Thinner. Lighter. Faster. It's completely predictable and not complicated.

I'll refer you back to my post immediately above yours, because all your questions are answered there. And please respond to my question.

As to whether heavier and thicker qualify as major flaws, it largely depends on what Apple usually aims at. So just answer me: does apple aim at making their products thinner and lighter, or thicker and heavier?

As to whether iPad 3 is the best selling tablets on the market, just so you know, when iPad 1 was out, iPad took 90% share of the tablet market. Now with iPad 3, it takes about 50% share of the market. The mere statement that it is still the best selling tablet adds nothing to your argument.

I don't have all that many apps on my Ipad. Books, office type, photo editing etc. and a few games.

All the apps I want run smoothly on my iPad1, so what is the point in spending a load more cash on something new to do what mine already does?

People who upgrade each time an updated product is released, just because it has the Apple name on it, have a lot more money than brain cells.

Not so fast buddy... Just try playing nova 3 or infinity blade 2 on your iPad 1, and you'll see why some people like me wants upgrade. It suits your need doesn't mean it suits everyone else's.

Yes, it does mean something and it means a lot when someone says the iPad is the best selling tablet on the market. And no, it's not 50% marketshare. There are so many metrics on this with differing numbers and number has settled in the 60s. ~65% real tablet marketshare worldwide.

The telling statistic is the one Tim Cook presented in a recent keynote: the iPad has 91% of internet tablet marketshare worldwide. That means that, out of every tablet in the word, the iPad makes up 91% of all Internet traffic, with just 9% predicated on all other tablets in the world combined.

Conclusion: people actually use the iPad, whereas the other tablets are collecting dust.

And as for sales, the iPad sells more each quarter than every other tablet in the world combined. And by an order of several times. In fact, the last quarter the iPad 3 broke iPad sales records for the most sold units in a quarter, ever.

And more iPads were sold than any PC manufacturer sold in their entire PC line.

Anything else I can help you with?
