how much more 'pro' can you get?
I'd rather be a Pro in the sense that I can focus on just doing the work vs. worrying about the tools

I see Pro being expandable and customizable and that doesn't mean a lanyard of dongles in order to use USB or add an external display.

You are three years late and a $1.25 short with your comment. Just go buy a damn cable and move one with your life. HDMI is not coming back. DRAM has been soldered to the logic board for 7 years...again three years late and a $1.25 short. Soldered storage for 3 years will cost you two bits.

Did you not pay attention to this sh*t when you bought your mid-2015, but now all of sudden the outrage machine inside you has spun up...?!?! The only difference between the 16” MBP and your 2015 is the soldered storage and no HDMI port.

Good grief, methinks its time for shot of bourbon and some Andy Griffith.
I couldn't complain about a full logic board replacement because of RAM, CPU, etc. However, there's a problem when the user can't replace a damn battery, keyboard, etc. Parts which do degrade at an unspecified time that is mostly contingent on use.

A DIY battery replacement is $80-$100 from iFixit and $200 from Apple that includes a complete top case replacement and limited warranty. Guess which one I am going to pick?

As for replacing the keyboard, that is the least of my worries.

The average user isn’t not doing these things, enthusiasts might be, and they are the ones who are complaining loudest about everything Apple does. I used to do these things but I honestly have no desire to keep doing so for the sake of doing so. If the computer works and it works for 3-5 years, then I’m good and I’m moving on to the next system. At the end of 5 years, something (usually the GPU) has changed enough that trying to prolong the life of the older system is no longer worth it. Users boasting of getting 12 years out of system don’t bother me, but don’t ask me to carry their torch, because I am going to tell them to suck it up and buy something newer.

i guess.. if you're a 'pro' at fixing/working on computers
I think these machines are geared towards artists/audio engineers/photographers and videographers and to them they'd want the most reliable portable machines from day 0.
The dongles I admit is a pain. But since the intro in 2016, most new gear has shifted to USB-C and I can't help but think that's out of necessity given Apple's push towards a unifying standard. So I'm hopeful that the pain will be relatively temporary.

It's better than the alternative. Remember when Apple tried to make Firewire 800, ExpressCard and Thunderbolt standards mainstream, only to be whittled down by competing more popular but less capable standards, which ends up just adding even more standards to the mess?

Did you say the same thing 7 years ago when Apple started doing this with the 2012 15” MacBook Pro or did you just get the memo?
Don't know about the OP, but I've been saying it ever since Apple started the trend. In iPhones and iPads it's more understandable, as they're sort of appliance-like, and carried around everywhere (with iPhones in particular usually unceremoniously shoved into pockets or purses). But MBP's used to come with replaceable RAM, SSDs and batteries, and they still should. Particularly with the "Pro" label.

The ports you can argue, because almost anything can be plugged into USB-C now, but there's no way to add another 16GB of RAM in 3 years. The old deal was "expandability". The new deal is "better guess your needs for the next 5 year correctly, right at the beginning", because if you guess wrong, you'll need to trade in an otherwise good working machine to get that extra memory. It's a bad deal.

And I'll still end up buying a MBP 16 eventually, because they've fixed the keyboard, and because I can't buy a (legit) machine running macOS from anyone else, and because Apple makes the only decent Unix laptops with the ability to run all the commercial software I want. It's still annoying that they've simply dropped expandability as a feature, and replaced it with "hope you guess correctly".

Not defending Apple for their repairability problems.

But let’s be honest here. Who actually takes their devices to third parties to repair? Apple care is so good that there’s really no reason to.

It wasn't that long ago that MacBooks and MacBook Pros came with instructions in the manual in the box that showed you how to replace the hard drive. It was super easy to do, which is why Apple could show consumers how to do it (in laptops that cost way less than $3,000) how to do it with a few simple graphics. It's why you could hugely increase the speed of 2012 and prior MacBooks by upgrading to an SSD. It would be so easy for Apple to use M.2 drive. I'm betting even the Mac Pro won't use standard M.2 drives.
Correct and Apple has never used standard m.2 drives in any MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iMac or the new Mac Pro. Why do people keep asking for something Apple is not going to give them?

Sorry, but Apple care is not that good. I send my computer to change my Logic board and my backlight for my keys was not working. When I took it back, they forgot to connect a cable...Really...??

Would it be so damn difficult to make the battery easier to remove? It's bound to fail sooner than the rest of the machine as it's a consumable. I don't know, use velcro, screws, or weaker glue or something dammit.

So just how do you think an unauthorized repair shop gets ahold of an official, authentic Apple battery?
Simple take two iPhones, take the battery from each and swap them in each other.
Authentic Apple battery but iOS does not report the part is legit.

I think it is great!!!!! I buy Applecare+ and never worry about fixing them! I don't want things that can come loose from a logic board. Good job Apple for making the most reliable system on the planet.

You got to be crazy not to buy Applecare + when a very highend laptop runs $3000. Only 1 10th of the cost of the whole computer!
What happens when Apple care Run’s out?

Usually the battery will last for 1000 cycles, depending on use should last 1-3+ years without requiring a replacement. I do agree that there should be an easier method to secure and remove the battery maybe clips similar to holding RAM DIMMs in place. Dunno I believe it is possible it’s just Apple cannot sell it’s AppleCare for which this entire situation becomes a conflict of interest.

I am honestly surprised that the EU has not looked into these practises especially by Apple.

Apple makes these things hard to repair and claims it is due to XYZ reason the cheerleading team on MR will come to Apple’s defense by eating the marketing and product design videos while Apple sells it’s AppleCare service for the very products it designs to make it near impossible for a user to repair and not permitting anyone to obtain authentic parts or locks down the OS to not recognize those authentic parts. This really is anti-competitive and a conflict of interest on Apple’s part. A class-action should help change this behaviour.

This stuff get recycled not throw away so no environment argument applies...

Really, where does it get recycled---so far as I know, it gets shipped to somewhere in Africa or around Thailand for it to sit there [1]---there's nothing salvagable in the design!

Remember, this is called "MacOSRumors.com," not "PC Enthusiasts.com"

Quit living in a bubble---Pros buy tools that suit them, not twist their needs to suit a particular brand, I have both Apples and Lenovos, and a whole bunch of HPEs and Supermicros---I get what gets the job done, and the thing Apple keeps limiting the "Pro sphere," if you don't look around you're going to be worshipping at a derelict temple alone...

Correct. But why would anybody want a shop to put a used battery in their phone?

Some people are not comfortable opening an iOS device but are comfortable opening a computer it all depends on their comfort level. Let’s say a one week or one month old iPhone screen shatters and it will cost more to replace or just better to purchase a new iPhone, in cases such as these the old iPhone will be stripped for parts. It is an industry wide practise and is part of the reduce, reuse and recycle ideology. Mobile devices including laptops have about 1000 recharge cycles before it needs to be replaced. At about 80-82% battery degradation a mobile device becomes a hassle meaning more plugging in to charge and less mobility, that is all.

Cmon people, complain more, I know you can do it

And whine where whining is the thing to do.

This topic will be cavernet sauvignon whine level.

Are you at all familiar with MacRumors forum members? Pages after pages of whining about the lack of SD reader in articles about the 16”.

If users havent been complaining and whining then I guess you will be stuck with butterfly keyboard, no escape key, and small arrow keys and perhaps no 16 inch macbook pro :p
