This is going to be expensive for the beta testers early adopters.

Also the fact that the phone looks like a binder when folded screams poor design.

This is what happens when the corporate ego to be “first” exceeds the institutional discipline to wait for technology to catch up to your ideas.

Say what you want about Apple, who isn’t perfect by any stretch, but man their discipline is impressive. Even if they think of an idea first, they’d wait and let other companies come to market first if they felt the tech wasn’t there to make it great.

Some made the X to be the worst phone ever that was full of flaws.
Notch, no home button, facial recognition, no Touch ID and I’m sure a number of other things.

The ‘notch and no home button’ does not make a defective product, that’s a preference that somebody chooses not to like. A defect like the Fold has is due to the way the phone was designed prevented it from being usable, those are two things are not mutually exclusive in your post.

Perhaps this: iPhone 4 case program.
iPhone 6+ bendgate
iPhone 7 cellular service

"If it worked"

Execution is much more difficult than presenting a concept.

Definitely. I was responding to the notion that folding was the solution to a non-existing problem. I think the problem is very real, but the current folding is obviously not a good solution. Maybe it will get there. I hope so.

If they can't fix it, it might not even make it to market. That'll make it easier to push the whole AirPower mess under the carpet...
That’s the difference. Apple wouldn’t have released it in that condition. It would have been delayed until ready. In recent years their hand gets forced into mentioning things not ready to ship, because they echo chamber is deafening and the leaks expose too much too soon.

Did you read some of the threads on this forum? Lol

I applaud Samsung for introducing the foldable phone. The introduced a new phone, beta tested it and are back to the drawing board. Meanwhile back at apple, hey boss what are we going to do with all the useless charging pads.

The foldable phone doesn’t interest me, but it was a bold move by Samsung.

Yet apple shipped how many free cases to iPhone 4 owners.

This is hilarious. Samsung is applauded for releasing a broken 2,000$ phone that includes a 1,000$ priced feature (the fold) which is defective. Why? Because these are the standards of innovation and quality these days.

The X could very well be disliked by anyone if they dont like not having a home button, but the phone works and does what was supposed to do and its features WORKED.

Now you obviously cant tell the difference between the 2 things, which absolutely expected since you applaud Samsung for the Fold...

Admittedly, it was a bit of an embarrassment to announce something and then have to shelve it, but at least Apple tested it and decided it wasn't possible, rather than releasing something that would overheat and possibly burn peoples houses down.

That is the difference between the two companies right there if we really want to involve Apple in this topic.
The two situations are not too dissimilar as Samsung have not actually released their product either. They just got a bit further down the line.

Introduced, not released; two different things

Samsung has, what - a year? Maybe more? of R&D into this phone and ifixit identified the problem by taking it apart that took probably 10 minutes?

Dang.
It would seem that this is a problem that nobody at Samsung wanted to find. Imagine you are the QA engineer and someone high above said "whoever finds a serious fault will be fired". Would you have found the problem?

I think that's the difference: iFixit wanted to find the problem. Samsung didn't want to find anything.

I think the problem is far deeper. It goes to material science. There is no material I know of that can fold and deform without deformation or tears and scratches for mass market consumers. The problem is HUGE.

it is so neat that samsung told the public they will ship the fixed version in june. like if it would be nearly possible to fix a manufacturing issue and run the necessary validation test, set up tooling, do another round of closed reviews in less then 6 months and i am being here extremely positive

Didn’t many here refer to the X as a beta/prototype device

I don't recall the X ever being referred to as a beta/prototype, but more as tomorrow's device here today in comparrison to the iPhone 8's that were still being released. However, even if that were the case, the X didn't have any major design defects discovered within 2 days of use by reviewers ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This thread if full of Samsung wants to be first quotes. Not sure why. Samsung wasn't the first to manufacture a foldable smartphone so getting the GFold out quickly didn't matter. Royole was with the FlexPai. First is not what they're looking to achieve. They are looking to be seen as more innovative than Apple. That's why they are willing to throw any new idea they conceive at their products. Their problem is a lot of the ideas aren't fully fleshed. Evidence: Galaxy Fold.

Say what you want about Apple, who isn’t perfect by any stretch, but man their discipline is impressive. Even if they think of an idea first, they’d wait and let other companies come to market first if they felt the tech wasn’t there to make it great.
Counterpoint: AirPower.
