Have any of the UpToDate copes shipped??
From glancing through all the posts it seems all are retail full price copies.

Mine is listed as shipping on the 30th

Nope, my up-to-date copy shipped and should be with me tomorrow.

Stop being a jerk.
Excuse me?!

You know he meant 850 kilobytes per second.
I.e., 1 Mbps = 125 kBps, 10 Mbps = 1.250 kBps, minus TCP overhead and other conditions making 850kBps rather decent.
No I did not. Please do not assume.

FYI, here in Japan, transmission speeds are sacred as it matters to us. For example, my friend with FTTH could DL the 4.5GB in under 8 minutes on a slow/bad day.

I opt for a cheaper solution so it would take me a bit longer.

Well, actually it's 43,369 seconds (36 * 1024) ;) Makes no difference to your final answer though, it will still take him 12 hours at that rate..
I stand corrected. :)

EDIT: Well, it would take 12 hours on an 850kbps line, but only 90 minutes on 850KBps line.
True, if there were such a thing. That's why all transmission speeds are bits per second so everyone is talking on the same sheet.

Hopefully they will be available at my university bookstore later this week! The Canadian Apple site lists it at $99 for the single user version and $129 for the family pack. I sould be able to get it at my bookstore for around $80.
I tend to like the DVD version rather than the DL version. That way I have a backup without wasting the time making one.

Probably will pick it up at the Ginza Apple Store. Gives me an excuse to visit there. :)

Well, given that he mentioned he was on a ten megabit connection, it's rather logical to think the 850"kbps" is "kBps" -- especially since you've proven that you can do the maths (not to mention the fact that people on the Internet know nothing about capitalization).

If you actually though he was proud of getting roughly one megabit on his ten megabit pipe, then fair enough -- I apologize, but that is rather unrealistic.

FYI: The rest of the world also considers throughput important, as we like to get what we pay for.
Do you really think that's unique to people in Japan?:confused::confused:

Update: Apple has posted a press release announcing that iLife '09 will officially be available on Tuesday, January 27th.

Hmmm......a Tuesday? I wonder if we'll also see some quiet hardware update as well? ;)

So for those that received a mac/mbp after Jan 6th, would they qualify for the $9.95 price of iLife 09? Or you must have a purchasing receipt to prove it?

Luckily i'll never have to find out firsthand cuz i will BUY it!

I buy it too, but for purchases like this, where it is an upgrade, I like to offer myself a trial first, and in that case, I would not mind my self-created trial.

Yeah, I know chances are I will like it and end up buying it, but there is always a chance that it will not be worth it.

I downloaded the 200MB version of the iPhoto Guided Tour. Took 3 minutes 45 seconds. Was getting between 800KBps and 1.1MBps according to Safari (with correct caps). Assuming the speed kept up, it would mean it takes me under 20 minutes to download 1GB. Total of under 90 minutes for a 4.5GB file based on a real world (though slimmed down) test.

PS: I didn't say you meant 850KBps, I said I am guessing that that is what the person you originally quoted meant.

That's the problem with ADSL and Cable.

It's not uncommon to see much lower actual transmission speeds than advertised.

I know of many in this situation.

Well, considering that Japan was way ahead of the world and continues to be at the forefront, yes.

Take for example my one friend who had FTTH in the late 90's. True 100Mbps connection for $40 per month -- 10 years ago. Now days, it's not such a big deal. Back then, it was drool worthy.

Now days, there are so many options. But that is not the topic of this thread. What got this started was how long it would take to DL the iLife DVD suite. I would venture to say, that for many it will be hours of DL time provided that they have sustained throughput on their Internet connection. Burst rate is one thing. Sustained rate is another. I've seen many try to DL the Mac OS 9.2 update (82MB) thinking that it would take well less than a minute only to find that it took much longer because the sustained throughput doesn't keep up. That's another reason that I don't put much stock into the speed tests that folks post. DL a large file and see how long it takes. That will give you a much better result and indication of your true bandwidth.

Cool.

How would you like to be able to DL the file in say 20 seconds or less?

FTTH baby! :)

Anyhow, I am going to purchase the DVD. That way I have a backup copy pre-made. Plus, I kind of like just having the commercial DVD copy.

and also offers iDVD

Other than relabeling iDVD to '09, did anything else in iDVD change? I wish the answer was yes but get the strong feeling the answer is no.

I can't find much in iWeb that has changed (my main application of interest as I am an FCE and Aperture user).

I never had a problem publishing my site to a non-.Mac site, and I don't publish multiple sites.

Is there anything in the new iWeb that might matter to me?

does anybody know if ilife is available in apple stores? well, im specifically looking for the Box Set or whatever the bundle of ilife, iwork and OS X is called.

I cant say this with 100% certainty. but it probably will be in the apple store. both the box set and the 3 seprate items. I do know for a fact that ilife 08, iwork 08, and leopard are always in my apple store.

I just checked my local BestBuy inventory and the nearest store now shows Stock available whereas it didn't at 9am this morning. I placed an online pickup order so we'll see if they email back with a Ready to Pickup status.
I'll keep you posted.

Amazon is still showing the box sets not available until Feb. 20, but they are selling them for a nice discount: $149 for the single user and $199 for the family pack.

People always assume the worst.
Sadly, they're probably right in doing so :(

Personally, I will be downloading iLife the second I can, but I've still ordered a copy.
I'm sure there's someone out there who thinks that's illegal, but the way I see it, I've paid for the license, and it's "on its way".
It really is no different from buying a CD and downloading it off the Internet instead of ripping it yourself.

Well, actually, it is a little different. Because, if you're downloading from a bit-torrent source, unless you set your client not to upload, then you're supporting other people who, let's be honest, are most likely not as noble as you and are downloading it illegally without buying a copy. So, you may not be doing anything, yourself, that might be considered illegal, but you may be acting as an accomplice to someone who is.

;)

I'll have mine tomorrow...

So... Still not installed by anyone here?

Is it the case that still no one has installed the software on their computer?
