A company whose cheapest laptop is $999 will survive, but not in a mass market sense.

A company with a $399 computer most likely won't make it through a recession.

See how easy it is?

Apple have huge margins on their products (compared to the rest of the industry), which is part of how they operate.
It's true though that only people interested in an Apple computer will buy one, but then again they're growing year by year, outpacing the rest of the industry.
For now, at least.

Apple and Nintendo work on much the same principle -- make a good profit.
Dell have almost no margin at all on their consumer machines, but their servers and workstations do.
On the other hand, Dell will always chop some off that margin if you tell them to.
Apple won't, unless it's a significant order (not counting the odd percentages when buying as a company).

The difference is, as you say, that Apple is a premium company.

The business model works for them for the time being -- let them stay healthy and growing, and we'll see what happens in the future.

Post if you pickup from BestBuy

I just went to my local BestBuy, and the Apple guy (he's one of those employees that works for Apple in a BestBuy store), said they have them in stock, but Apple is not letting them sell until tomorrow.

Hopefully other people have better luck.

Actually, every word of what you said sounds like a true Mac Fanboy :p ;)

If Apple stay like Apple they won't get close to PC marketshare. The simplest way to explain this is their stance on Blu-Ray. Want a PC laptop with Blu-Ray? Go and buy one. Want a Mac with Blu-Ray? Wait...

The market at large like choice. If you want a 7" netbook then you can get one. If you want a 13"/14" laptop that looks as good as a MacBook but with all the specs (well, higher usually) then you can go for a Vaio. And so on.

Apple are a premium computer company that are only ever good if what they provide is what you want (or are prepared to put up with because it has an Apple logo on it). A company whose cheapest laptop is $999 will survive, but not in a mass market sense.

The Mac marketshare is still growing rapidly. Nice try, but they show no real signs of having topped out yet.

Just picked it up from BB about 1/2 hr. ago. Purchased online and used in-store pickup.

By the way, no copies were on the floor.

Installing now...

Jay

ps...Columbus, OH (Polaris Store #570)

In the past, Apple has rolled out updates to various other products (Aperture, QuickTime, iTunes, etc) to make them compatible with the newest iLife release.

Not to mention, iLife likely "released to manufacturing" some 9 to 14 days ago. Therefore, Apple has likely squashed additional bugs between RTM and the ship date that will need to be patched.

Jay, let us know your first impressions. I'm leaving work early today to install mine. But I wanna see what you have to say.

It's Out..union City, Ca And East Palo Alto, Ca Have It Now

I work at East Palo Alto and they have it now and I live near Union City and they have it now, so if you live in the bay area call your local Best Buy and have them check their UPS and Fedex shipments......it's out....GO GO GO get it

I'm from Brazil, so I won't be getting iLife '09 in less than 2 months, that's the awful truth. So, it would be great, if one of you, who bought it today, would share it with us. Because i can't wait anymore. And i'm planning to buy a license after all.

Emotion got the best of me and I ordered a copy from BB online for pick-up (still waiting for p/u confirmation). Here is to hoping iPhoto and iMovie are as "improved" as they are billed. I could live w/o the Garage Band update, never use iWeb, and Apple didn't even bother to stick in some new themes in iDVD.

Apple store said, "Wait ' till tomorrow."

Best Buy said, "Com'n git it!"

Just picked mine up from BB in Grapevine, TX! W00t! None on the floor - had to ask for it.

VEry excited to get the imovie features back!

West Simsbury, CT and Worcester, MA Best Buys have it.
Debating whether to get it or just wait and see if our bookstore gets it tomorrow for half the price.
