sweet! but the box set is still not shipping. my order status shows est. ship of Jan. 30. Oh I can wait a little longer. But I'm so excited to finally make the jump to Leopard, and iPhoto 09 for 'faces!'

anyone got a pointer on the migration to Leopard (from 10.4.11). I usually do an 'erase and install' when moving to the next major OS, but would there be any significant reason to go ahead and just do an 'update' install instead?

i typically do an erase and install myself once I am secure that all my files are probably backed up. It's likely not necessary but I like to scratch and start over my system periodically to clean out any old gunk and a major OS update is a good time to do it. suppose it all depends on how long you want to spend doing it.

Called Best Buy....

Just called Best Buy, they told me it was released today, but the status of the shipment means they still won't get it for a few weeks.

EDIT: The only products that Apple does distribute via download are:
iWork - about 600 mb
Quicktime/iTunes: about 50 mb.
Aperture via trial: 1-200 mb.

The highest thing that Apple has for downloads are it's movies and they are capped out to a couple of Gigs.

Don't forget X-Code. Thats a pretty big size download. (1.6GB for the iPhone SDK)
Also, the SHAKE trial is quite large as well.

ftp in iweb

iWeb 09 has FTP built in! This is huge. iphoto 09 has some pretty cool features that i'm also looking forward to like direct upload to facebook and auto face tagging, and garageband has lessons, i play guitar now but it cant hurt to learn more or use it to keep up with technique and scales and such, and I'd also like to learn piano so that will be really sweet.

I just recently got into the website stuff after dreamhost had an awesome deal where I got 2 years of unlimited space/bandwidth hosting for 20 dollars, no joke. So iWeb FTP, combined with upload only pages that need to be updated to my website over FTP will be amazing for this. And my sister got aperture which has auto web-page building in it which is much better than iweb's photo gallery plus she can put watermarks on her pics (she recently went to the Galapagos with her D60).

If iLife 09 comes out this week, im pretty sure this weekend will be full of playing with it and getting pictures and such up online.

I think the big reason is that content wise, it has to be be several gigs in size or just the DMG - the distribution is done on a DVD here. Internet downloads are just not fast enough nor reliable enough to allow for a download of that nature. Its not comparable to iWork which is about a 600 mb download and well within reason. A 4.6 gig download just will not compare without introducing easy piracy via bit torrent (which I see is the only viable way). We also have to factor in ISP's who won't be happy.

I download games from Steam that are 7+ gigs frequently. Even if it takes all night, which it usually doesn't, it's still faster than waiting 3-4 days for it to get to you. I think it's crazy that we still heavily rely on pressing the CDs, shrinkwrapping them, sending them to the distributor, etc.

It would be really cool if Apple offered all their software through iTunes, tied in with your account (would solve the piracy problem.)

yeah but it could also kill itunes servers i mean the itunes Servers came to a crashing halt when iphone 2.0 firmware came out granted that was also relased the same day the 3g iphone came out and you had 5 million activations going on the servers but it could just be that bad especailly if something like The next OS comes out.

Just to let you guys know my Apple account now says 'prepared for shipment' as of the 24th Of January and I am no longer allowed to change the delivery address when yesterday I could! My order was placed on the 12th of January if anyone was wondering!

I placed the order on January 9th and it still shows the same ship/delivery dates as when I made the order. Go figure, maybe it will change like yours did in the next few days.

Hope So

I really only buy it for iWeb. I know most people hate it but I like iWeb. My wife uses iPhoto and I think she will really like the new update.

I am on the road all week so I would like to go to an Apple store to buy since I will have nothing else to do in the evening.

I forgot about XCode, that is quite large.

As far as Shake - I was not aware that was available as a trial. Sure enough, you are right. But as I said, iLife is several Gigs in size.

As far as steam, I am not ware how their download mechanisms work, but I doubt that it is built anywhere near the scale of the nearest Apple equivalent iTunes... I can tell you that Steam is also heavily built around DRM, iLife is not...

I take the part about the Shake trial being big back. I swear in the past when I downloaded it, it was around 1GB. Now its just a few MB's...

Because, iWork is a separate product that does not automatically come with a Mac. You have to explicitly order it. No up to date would apply since it is a separate bundle.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure it's entirely correct. If you purchased a copy of iWork '08 after '09 was announced, I believe Apple will extend the "up to date" deal to you.

if everyone was moral...no one would be.

Ah yes; so therefore everyone is immoral and no one can have morality. Wow it all makes sense now. FTW!

or not since everyone knew it was coming out at that point and the stores had it within days. in fact they were likely told to pull the old stock that same day just so no one could buy it. or if not, anyone that came back cause they bought that morning before the announcement would be allowed to exchange it if they had the receipt and did it within the 2 weeks blah blah.

also, I don't know any real details but my roommate works PT as a security guard at one of the malls here in LA that has an Apple Store. He just got a call asking if he could come in on a pick up shift tomorrow night because someone had to call out and they need two guards there because the Apple Store is going to have employees there doing something late. Nate says that it's not uncommon for them to be there late or even overnight to change out their window displays, update all the computers on the floor etc. Both of which are things that might be happening if Tuesday is the grand release day for the stores cause they would want the software and sample files on their computers to show it up, etc.

Morality talk aside, does anyone know when 09 will be bundled with new orders? I want to order my macbook NOW lol

Kids please. Take your morality talks elsewhere, lest we forget the title of this thread.
