I'm betting it'll be Facetime for Mac as well. Enable people on their home computers to seamlessly video chat with iphone 4 users and eventually ipad users.

DEFINITELY new hardware around the same time too, I say.

I hope so. I was >< this close to ordering a new iMac when the first rumours of a refresh surfaced, so I've got the cash and a desire for a faster machine. All I need is an actual release. :)

I'm going to assume that iLife won't get updated without a thorough update of iWork as well. And funny enough, that's a day when I'll be in the DC area on a (very short) trip to see my ailing grandfather.

So, here are my wishlist items for iLife '11 AND iWork '11:

iLife '11:
iMovie Pro (i.e. a rebranded & redesigned Final Cut Express, because most serious movie editors buy FCE anyway, because iMovie is a piece of crap for those users who don't find themselves limited by the limitations of iMovie, which is about 99.99% of users)

iMedia (because iTunes is a branded thing, I gather that this would be the rebranded iDVD, which would have iTunes LP & iTunes Extras functionality as well as DVD and Blu-Ray burning functionality... A man can dream I guess...)

Improvements to Garageband to make it slightly less laggy when recording podcasts, and when you create a new podcast file, I don't give two baloney sandwiches about the tempo, et al, I would love for Garageband to set that automatically!

Improvements to iPhoto so that it doesn't hang automatically when, say, plugging in a camera or an iPhone. Giving us a way to disable Faces would be a good idea too...

I think iWeb needs a severe overhaul in the age of Squarespace, and I think that it might be wonderfully useful in creating your personal iTunes Store page when iTunes supports user generated content like that found on YouTube, with no way of gaming the DMCA flagging system so that certain YouTube users could be taken down in the blink of an eye.

Speaking of iTunes, can we puh-LEEZE have a good new version of iTunes, called iTunes X or 10 or whatever? Seriously, iTunes needs a severe overhaul YESTERDAY.

In iTunes X, I'd love to see user generated content with some way of being able to contact the rights holders of whatever we want to do user generated content wise right within the app.

For example, say I wanted to record my own album. I could contact the songwriters of the songs I wanted to use for said album right from within iTunes X, and I could ask them about using particular songs I wanted to record.

They might even be willing to help an up-&-coming singer/songwriter type with regards to recording the song in question, maybe even background vocals!

I'd also like to see this rumored new iTunes TV service, and cloud-based storage (with hard drive backup).

If they managed to cram all of this in, they could really make the iTunes client we all use daily way better than it is right now, which is a steaming pile of crap for anything other than music and other audio files!

iWork '11:
I'd love for Pages to have the same way of making different page setups as Microsoft Word does (at least have a freaking Book Fold setting, jeez).

Same for Numbers, I'd love for it to have better Excel-esque features, such as pivot tables, advanced formulas, and many of the truly advanced Excel features that Numbers currently lacks.

Keynote needs no major changes, as I rarely use it anyway. I'll welcome any changes, because I am sure I will have to use it in the future, once I get out into the real world, or at least until I have to take a business presentation class...

As for new iWork apps, how about an updated MacDraw please that works with the old MacDraw files?

BJ

Maybe they'll finally fix it all to work with mobile accounts on a server... we can but hope

Where do you get this "hatred towards BluRay" from? Steve has, nor has he ever expressed hate for BluRay. BluRay, like BetaMax, doesn't make financial sense. Both have insane licensing fees tied to them, which get passed onto consumers. BetaMax and BluRay both have superior resolution, but the general masses are not willing to pay for it. Cheep is more important to them than quality. Why do you think Walmart is now bigger than the next 6 retailers combined? The masses prefer cheep. Walmart sells a whole lot of crap to the masses because it's cheep.

This was Steve's quote about Blu Ray in 2008.

Then again in 2010

iDVD gone, new FrontRow

My guess is much of iDVD's tasks will be introduced into iMovie. iWeb gets a much needed upgrade with an eventual iOS app for mobile web editing.

Apple's latest modification to the Mac Mini is a signal that Apple is getting the hint that many people love the Mini as part of a home theater system. The introduction of an HDMI port on the Mini as well as the ability to scale the screen size (to fix a very common resolution issue when using the Mini with an HDTV) are signs Apple is moving into home theater.

FrontRow needs a major fix. FrontRow is going to get an AppleTV menu structure makeover. I realize it hasn't been part of iLife but a new home theater hub would make sense as part of this package.

My only thought on a "mystery app" would be some type of browser for all your media: a "Bridge" light type of app. You could browse what media you have where, including if you have it uploaded to your MobileMe account (thus promoting MobileMe integration more tightly). You would also know if your media is backed up with Time Machine, if you've published an album to Facebook, etc;.

I agree with rolling iDVD into iMovie. The challenge for a mystery app is figuring out what is needed or missing right now from iLife. Photos, check. Movies, check. Web, check. Audio, check. So what's missing? Maybe a way to manage it all (?)

The mystery application will presumably be some sort of content creation/editing app, as that's what all the others are.

Since iLife already does that to some extent for still and moving images, sounds, and text publishing, I can't think of another category of content creation/editing that would require a separate application. Except, that is, for iOS app creation.

If Apple were to present a way for people who have interesting datasets but zero programming knowledge to make apps then that could be HUGE. It's not out of keeping with iLife tradition either, since iWeb is touted as a way to create websites with zero programming knowledge. And Apple's got to top Android's efforts to do something similar somehow!;)

+1 an iOS app maker may be likely. But appOmator already does this -

and it's free to download, easy to use and looks to be having some early success.

iPaint gets my vote.

Steve has said "Youtube supports HD" in response to people asking about Blu-Ray support in Macs.

FaceTime is an open standard, Apple wants penetration. They won't only release FaceTime for the Mac as paid software.

Perhaps it could be a mapping application? Seeing as Apple have bought up several mapping companies recently?

Really hoping Faces can finally integrate with Address Book. You spend all this time labeling who certain people are and then you can't even use it to associate their face with their name. WTF?

I'm not really fussed about the 'MysteryApp' but will be good to see what it is, how ever the idea of having a iWeb overhaul sounds great as I use for my website and love it however would like to be able to create a iPhone friendly version within the iWeb.

Just bought a MBP last night ... Am I "stuck" with iLife '09 or do I get the upgrade to '11? Should I call and cancel the order?

For iLife '09 they had a program where you could upgrade for $9.99 if you bought your Mac after a certain date.

iWeb was one of those brilliant killer apps...

 Really?

iWeb was so befuddlingly clunky it was easier just to make your own site in Dreamweaver. I thought it was total junk. To each his own, but sort of surprised to hear anyone praise that app.

The "mystery" app should have something to do with social media. A "lifestream" type of app - an aggregator of your life in pictures, posts, hobbies etc. Apple so far has been pretty bad at showing they understand social media. Here's to hoping.

New iLife predictions

My take:

iLife 11 will have:
- iMovie completely redesigned with export options for AppleTV, iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch integrated
- iMovie will be able to import immediately movies taken from your iDevice
- iMovie will allow geotagging of videos
- iMovie will have faces and places in it as well

- iWeb completely redesigned and available on AppStore immediately for both iPad and iPhone, more blog oriented.
- iWeb and MobileMe galleries will (FINALLY) be more integrated
- iWeb will be able to create your site automatically for browser, iPad and iPhone optimized
- iWeb will allow you to put iAds in the webpages (maybe a bit far fetched)

- iPhoto will have a more "iTunes like" interface to better organize movie clips, pictures etc. (sort of like iTunes has for music, movies, tv series)
- iPhoto will have a more thorough integration with MobileMe galleries

Garageband: I suspend judgement, as I don't use it and am not interested in it.
iDVD will go the way of the dodo.

Mistery app? iEarth!! A map application to put your photos, movies, everything on a gorgeous map. (also available on the AppStore immediately).

I, as an Aperture user, just hope that whatever they come out with, will not surpass Aperture again and make us wait ages.
