What design philosophy absolutely doesn't allow cutting 5$ into the profit margin to create a much better device?.

A philosophy that disagrees with you and thinks throwing away $1 BILLION dollars (that's how many iPads have been sold times $5) will not necessarily make a much better device.

Samsung put 2GB on their tablets, Dell put 2GB on their tablets, Google put 2GB on their tablets, LG put 2GB on their tablets, Amazon put 2GB on their tablets, Microsoft put 2GB on their tablets, Nokia put 2GB on their tablets, Asus put 2GB on their tablets, Acer put 2GB on their tablets.

Hell, find me a high end tablet released this year that doesn't have 2 or more GBs of RAM. iPad's the only one, and it's also the only one that's suffering from RAM issues.

If they put 2 in the Air no one would need to buy the next one. Simple. Its how they work.

Yet Apple outsells them all, making a tablet more people want than any of those.

I guess those 2GB ain't helping any of them that much, now is it?

FYI 7.1 beta 2 does NOT fix the reloading tab issue. I have two tabs open right now on my iPad Air, and after a few web-page loads in one tab, the other tab is reloading when I switch to it.

Pretty sad... :(

If 2012-2013 trends continue onto 2014 (Android growing at 71.5%/yr, Apple shrinking at 23.5%/yr), Android will have 56% tablet share, Apple 45%. 2014 will not be an Apple year. Apple is the new RIM.

OMG again this futile arguments about market share ...
Is there A SINGLE Android tablet selling SIMILAR to an iPad Air or an iPad rMini ?
NO THERE ISNT, BY FAR.

Android market share is pumped up by crappy <150$ devices ....

That's the part that the fanboi group doesn't understand. Most folks here, who are throwing out criticisms, are 90% happy wih what apple is doing. It's that 10% that is sooooooooo frustrating. In this case, not having 2Gigs of RAM is causing a much worse user experience. You and your buddies are trying to convince people that loading tabs constantly in safari is a good thing. We're not buying it, no matter how much FUD you push out.

I don't need somebody advice me about how better experience I could have on Android devices (as it was true ...).
If I'd need advice, I surely had asked for it.
The thread is legit : there is an issue with 64-bit version of Safari causing a memory leakage after a while.
But I don't need someone keep telling me that Samsung is using 2 Gb since:
A) I'm not going to buy a Samsung device
B) this forum is about APPLE' s devices (this section about iPads)
C) if I'd like to speak about Android I could find several forums
D) the problem is not entirely related to the ram since there is a leakage and maybe it could eat up also 2 or 3 Gb if installed ...

Wtf are you talking about? Did you even read my post? Obviously not. Go bother other People about android, I ONLY ever talk about the poor user experience apple has give its customers, with cheaping out on the RAM. Pointing out the trend in the android world, only further solidifies the poor choice apple made.

This is a forum about a tablet, to bury your head in the sand, when others given comparisons to other tablet, is akin to throwing a child like tantrum.

Those of us who are very happy with most of what Apple is doing, are even happier that there is competition out there to hopefully force apple to up its game even more for the benefit of the consumer. Seems that you would rather there be no competition, and fewer advancements. Because you know that IS the logical outcome with ignoreing the competition - see RIM/Blackberry. I don't know why you would wish that upon apple.

Well, let's hope iOS 7.1, instead of Air 2, will fix both the serious reloading and crashing issues on my Air.

First: I wasn't referring directly to your posts, but to the general behavior of some users here.
Second: this ISN'T a forum about tablets. This section is about IPAD. There is a specific section about "non Apple devices".
Third: as an Apple user since 1989 I can say that Apple isn't RIM. They have an history of going against "the market" and surviving.

I'm happy with MOST of Apple is doing, as you said. I still complain about bugs, battery and something else, and I know that prices could be lower for many devices.

I'm just tired to see people n this forum who feel the need to save us doomed iSheep trying to convert us to the Android Heaven (I'm not referring to you).
Cheers

So yeah. This problem has always existed for iOS. And while others managed to put enough RAM on their devices to not have problems like this - even cheap 200$ tablets did - Apple stubbornly continues to do this and keeps having the same issues it had back when the first iPhone came out.

Hell no. And let me explain why.

First off, realize the way Android breaks into market share. There is no single device that has the kind of presence that the iDevices do. The Galaxy S line is up there, but not quite. See, the vast majority of consumers don't split the smartphone world into "Android" and "iOS" like tech folk do, it's just "a bunch of smartphones". So the iPhone is just one of many. It makes SENSE that iOS wouldn't have the total share of Android because there are so many fewer devices.

Secondly, look at where Apple tends to target. They don't do stuff like Motorola with the Moto G or Samsung on the Minis. You can get an Android tablet for $200 if you want a used Nexus. Hell you can get an Android tablet for $80 if you're willing to get a POS.

Point 2 is important because it means that for many, many people with Android tablets, they're not getting an Android tablet INSTEAD of an iPad, they're getting one because that's the only tablet in their price range. As in, Apple isn't losing sales, the overall market saturation is just up and the low-end demo is being taken by Android-based devices.

Apple does not care about market share. Look at their laptop line. You can pick up a Windows laptop for $250. You want a Macbook you're paying over $1000 just to get an entry-level. Double that if you want one with any oomph to it. Apple isn't courting the whole market, they're aiming squarely at the "luxury" or "premium" end.

Interesting statistic: Apple obviously does not have a majority stake in laptop sales, but they do sell roughly 90% of all laptops over $1000. People keep talking about market share while ignoring that the people who buy many non-Apple products ARE NOT GOING TO GET AN APPLE PRODUCT PERIOD.

90% of Android tablets on the market have 1 Gb OR LESS ... KitKat is optimized to run on 512 mb devices for these reason (fragmentation).
This has nothing to do with the issue of the topic, since Android in a way less optimized OS designed to run on a huge number of completely different devices.

Totally agree. I've bought an iPad Air along with a Surface 2. The reloading of tabs is absent on the Surface 2 and I prefer its landscape display too whenever I'm watching movies. My Air can crash a few times a day and the reloading of tabs is sometimes annoying. I'm going to see which improvements iOS 7.1 brings. I might just sell the iPad Air at a loss and keep the Surface 2 along with my Macbook Pro Retina (they integrate better than expected).

First iPad and iPhone 3GS were underpowered as far as ram is concerned (problem less evident on iPhone at the time, but clearly noticeable on the first iPad where web contents were more requested).
256 Mb was just not enough.
Starting with iPad 2 and iPhone 4 they used 512 Mb of ram and since then the problem was solved.
Now il would be BETTER to have 2 Gb on iPad Air, and I bet we are going to see it happens in the next generation, but there is no problem with 1 Gb since you have 5-600 Mb of free ram available after the boot.
The problem here is a MEMORY LEAKAGE caused by a poor management in the 64 bit version of iOS 7, that maybe will be addressed with iOS 7.1

Btw instead of whine and keep speaking about android (like it was a well optimized os ...), let's apple know about the problem via feedback.
This is what I wrote, maybe could be an inspiration for your complains ...

I strongly suspect a memory leakage in the 64-bit implementation of iOS 7, especially when Safari is used. I did a comparison between my old iPad 4 and the new iPad Air, both with identical software installed. After a fresh boot the free memory is quite similar, slightly more than 500 mb. After a moderate use of Safari and others "basic" apps, like Mail , with 2-3 tabs opened , the free memory on iPad 4 is still above 2-350 Mb while on iPad Air it suddenly drops below 150 Mb or less. With the same usage.
Also closing tabs and apps doesn't help since the iPad 4 purge used ram up to >400 Mb free, while iPad Air remains with 150 Mb of free ram.

----------

I keep performing test to confirm my theory.
Fresh reboot, >500 Mb of free ram.
Used Safari for 30 minutes, with 2-3 tabs opened, < 150 Mb of free ram.
On the iPad 4 is > 300 Mb , huge difference !!!
Close Safari .... Still < 250 Mb, while on iPad 4 the ram is freed up to 450 Mb.
Something wrong with the purge routine of iOS 7 / 64-bits or with Safari 64 bit itself.

PS: it's not only Safari, because after close it the free ram is about 250-300 Mb while it should be over 450 Mb like on iPad 4.

That's it exactly. The 2GB of RAM will come...

If they don't solve the problem I described above, they can even put 8 Gb inside iPad Air 2, but ram will be eaten nevertheless ...

Btw is very interesting to note as people here just wanna whine and cry instead of doing some proper testing and report results to the community.
Yeah, is much better to say "android uses 2-3-32 Gb" instead of understand if the problem is ram quantity or not ...

That IS the point even if you want to ignore it. Apple doesn't need to do what every other tablet maker out there does. They make a better tablet more people want to buy. They don't need to copy anyone. Just because Android needs 2GB to work doesn't mean iOS needs it.

Try comprehending this very simple fact before YOU reply to ME.
