God...i wonder in full screen videos or anything...the pixels above the pill shape will show the content or it will be black?
imagine looking at a video and you are getting some fragment from the video in that little space, so hilarious and useless...
It will work just like the notch. By default, apps don't write to that area. When playing videos that area is blacked out. You have to manually zoom in on a video to cause the video to overlap that area. That is your choice.

Given that neither the few additional pixels “above” or “between” the cutouts is useable, I’m not sure I really understand the benefit of the change other than change itself. Somebody help me. What am I missing?
I just reduces the visual weight of the notch and gives a little more space on either side. This is just the next stage in the evolution of the cameras and sensors that will probably eventually sit underneath the screen when the tech is ready.

I can’t wait to see if the new pill and hole is a visual improvement or not over the notch. I guess ultimately the best option for Apple would be to put everything into the top bezel for a true “clean” look, but then how does Apple make the display “stand out” in a sea of similar looking Android phones?

I wonder if they will use the hole punch/pill as an "i" to spell out iPhone in marketing videos
Here you go.

i for incredible = i for iPhone.

I’ll have to see it in person but I feel like the pill shape will be even more „in your face“ floating like a dead pixel on your screen
So, I could see that being true. At the same time, the pixels in the areas where the notch used to be will make it much nicer when games or other content extend into that space. It’s irritating when buttons are more obscured than visible because of the notch covering them up.

I’ve been thinking about that since the first leaked images. It’s hard to imagine Apple’s marketing team ignoring that opportunity.

Oooh. Seeing these renders and images now gives a much better idea of what we could be getting. I was iffy on the cutouts but they look way better than the notch. The screen is continuous around the edge now.

I think the pill and punch hole looks way worse than the notch.

I will just go with the iPhine 14 Max...unless there is no upgrade to the processor. If that is the case, might just as well keep my iPhone 13 Pro Max.

With the extra space available, I would LOVE to see the icon for earphones or AirPods on the main screen. I sometimes lose the connection and the next time I play sound it comes through the phone instead of the AirPods. I realize that swiping down shows the icon, but it should be on the main screen like it was for many years before the notch was introduced. It would be best if users were given a CHOICE as to what appears on the main screen. For example, I don't much care to see "LTE" or "5G" since whatever it is, it is. The earphone icon is more useful to me.

I'll never get over how ugly that thing is. Apple's first asymmetric iPhone design ever, the most appealing feature about their design language is gone.
I take it you never turn your iPhone to landscape mode. That's been terribly asymmetrical and UGLY ever since they put the notch in. This pill and cutout is probably not large enough to bother me, but I'll have to see it before I buy...

The cutout I want to see is if it still has lightening port or if iPhone finally is upgraded to a modern USB-C port.
My ideal next iPhone would definitely have USBc! I want that more than anything I think. My android phone is USBc, my iPad Mini is USBc and all the new other stuff I've gotten in the last couple of years is USBc.

“Innovation”? Their Face ID is still the best out there, after 5 years. I’m not willing to give that up for a pinhole or under the screen design that loses quality with Face ID and front facing camera.

It’s only a guess on my part, but I’m pretty sure they’re moving to this design for some reason having to do with hardware. And I’m okay with that.
Face ID has been very good but it’s also not perfect. When the phone is on a table it’s pretty much useless. I have to enter my pin to access my phone quite often which is a real pain. They should have integrated Touch ID alongside Face ID.

I understand that major changes in tech are no longer happening as quickly but I do feel that apple should be doing a bit more than a faster processor, better camera or slight redesign every year.

When have you run across an app where the notch covers up any buttons? Apps do not use the notch area by default. When they ask the OS for their drawable area, it tells them the area beneath the notch. Apps need to register themselves and specifically ask for the full screen area. After that it is up to them to draw something in that area or not.

Some people naively assume when they first see the notch that it will cover up parts of apps and that Apple never thought of that. Neither of those things are true.
