well they surprised me yesterday with that nice double screen notebook idea - but back to their usual "craptastic" looking stuff today - they just have no 1 design vision that all their products follow like Apple has - it is random

glad they have someone like sharp making it I guess... just plug an antenna on the zune HD and call it a day

Sharp?

Of all the electronics I have owned, Sharp are the least reliable, hands down.

I forever associated "Sharp" with "Cheap, crappy, will fail, will annoy you".

Whoops.

You morons, read the article. Microsoft didn't design it. They aren't manufacturing it. They're re branding an OEM product, loading on their software and apparently plan on marketing it to teens.

They haven't themselves copied Palm. And they're not aiming for a high-price phone like the iPhone.

I agree most people here are to blind to even bother reading it. They see Microsoft and think BASH.

From the article they are targeting teens. So Smart phone is rather out of the mix there for most. They need something cheaper and something good at texting. The Turtle looks a lot like the Motorola Karma which I hear is a good texting phone and I really only see teens with them. I personally hate it.

The other phone looks like a texting phone with a horizontal keyboard. Already quit a few of those on the market..

Microsoft is not going in to compete head to head with apple. That is well the dumb ass author who added that little bit in to get more buzz. False reporting ad we all know it.

Crap! I just entered another contract because I upgraded to the 3GS! SOB! Great timing MS. You would have had me. :D

Im glad MS is stepping in the ring.

I actually REALLY like the new zune, and if it worked with a mac, I'd probably pick one up just for the OLED screen and change from my ipod. If the ipod wasn't so set, I honestly think the zune would give it a run. I never really liked the ipod interface too much, and its really boring.

I also like these new MS phones. They may not be snazzy, but if it has good basics (solid interface and build quality, good syncing with windows 7, and a low price) and I think its a contender. Personally I am getting bored of my iphone. It does the job, but its not customizable without hacking, and most of the "apps" are a waste of time. (as least for me)

This may read like a troll post but I SERIOUSLY like the stuff MS is doing. Not enough to switch back (I cant believe I even typed "switch back") , but definitely enough to consider getting windows back in my life. or at least, to stop feeling bad for people with PCs.

I feel like Apple is looking for a new direction...every new product they come out with is just "more features, more complex" whereas they used to be all about simplicity. I mean, a video camera ipod? The only thing I can think that would be good for is...uh..personal uses with SO's.

OT: I blew my grandpas mind with my iphone yesterday "it tells the time in London, Berlin, NY, anywhere...it has a calculator...it shows the weather...heres a map, with directions...it plays music...and movies..I can buy movie tickets, here are the showtimes....it goes on the internet...and it makes phone calls...and here is my schedule..."

I love how everyone always dismisses anything not Apple as negative, I for one think this is great, the iPhone needs some competition, I personally would like to see more features and such, without competition apple has no reason to step up their game and add innovative features, I welcome any and all newcomers to the market including Microsoft.

I agree with you that competition is good for the consumer but isn't it stretching it a bit to say that Apple has no competition in the smartphonemarket as it is?

I swear to got, I use safari and MR is on my top list so when I checked the site thumbnail from top list and I thought it's some kind of Plam Pre news and when I clicked it there it goes, MS has done it again....

There is a lot of good Windows Mobile hardware out there already like the stuff from HTC. Unless Microsoft starts making better Windows Mobile, this phone is gonna suck like all the other Windows Mobile phones.

So what happened with all of Apple's patents on the iPhone interface? You know, from the original intro, "And boy have we patented it!"

This thing would hardly violate any of Apple's patents. That's most likely why there is a hard keyboard: either it has no soft keyboard, or the soft keyboard is so inadequate due to the lack of Apple's patented technology that it needs a hard keyboard to be usable.

As others have said, this won't affect iPhone's sales. It's possible it isn't even meant to compete with iPhone considering it looks so inadequate.

Those are big ifs. Solid interface from Microsoft is unlikely, going on past experience. Build quality from either Microsoft or Sharp is again questionable. Good syncing with Windows 7? Well you'd have to hope so, though I know the Windows Mobile sync through ActiveSync always used to be annoying. Low price? Possibly, since that is really the only leg Microsoft ever has to stand on when it comes to criticising Apple stuff. Yes, surprise surprise, better stuff costs more, crap stuff costs less. That's the way the world works.

Every time some “iPhone Killer” hits the market it fails. I think manufacturers are missing the point – it’s not about the hardware, the SOFTWARE is the key!

Look at the history of the computer industry. Apple was once the dominate force in the industry. Then Bill Gates made his infamous deal with IBM which allowed the proliferation of “IBM compatible” computers by dozens of companies. Software developers started writing programs for IBM compatible computers because they now had a wider range of computers that could run them. Soon Apple’s software library was dwarfed by IBM compatible software titles. Consumers began buying IBM compatible computers simply because there were so many choices in software available. Microsoft took the lead and they’ve kept it for pretty much the same reason.

With the library of apps available to the iPhone it will be tough for any manufacturer to compete at this point. Apple learned their lesson well.

Funny.

Microsoft copies Pre. Palm copies iPhone. Apple truly originates with iPhone.

To me Palm has exactly what is coming to them. Good luck Microsoft with the fat Pre.

Competition benefits everyone - even iPhone owners. I just wish Microsoft was better at it...

As a side note, and FWIW, an acquaintance who works in the Windows Mobile division says most of them expect the OS to be EOLed in the next year or so. Supposedly none of them know what, if anything, is planned to supplant it - they think they're going to be cut loose.

actually M$ helps other companies get more profit... M$ is good... thanks for letting me having more reason to purchase palm pre...
