Exactly.

When did Apple fans become so obnoxious?

Why do you guys assume that the people who say they don't like only do because it's from Microsoft? There are people in this thread that like this and people who don't, just like in everything in life.

Maybe you guys are assuming that everyone that doesn't like it is a fanboy? Isn't that just as unfair?

Perhaps Longhorn would have retained its name, had it not been scrapped three quarters of the way through in 2003. It would eventually have been named BlackComb, which was to be Longhorn's successor, (also based on the Windows XP source code) before the entire project was canned, and renamed Vista.

No, it would not. Microsoft has never shipped Windows using its codename before and probably never will. We all remember Windows Chicago, Memphis, etc.. Blackcomb and Longhorn were just that, codenames.

And the project never was canned. Vista is still based on Windows XP (actually, the Windows NT family).

When I saw the images, I thought "Oh, it's another article about the Palm Pre."

Unfortunately I was wrong. Did it ever occur to Microsoft that people might notice how their products look oddly similar to other 1-2 year old products?

It seems like they have a very nice piece of hardware with the Zune HD, along with a unique looking interface and desktop software integration. Why not extend that to a Zune Phone, like the iPod Touch is to the iPhone? Open up the Zune Marketplace and boom. Seems really obvious. Could even be successful. So I wonder why they bother with these silly projects (but then, Apple DID try the Motorola ROKR iTunes thing).

It might be a nice idea from a consumer point of view, but it would Microsoft in a position few companies would ever want to find themselves; a standing start against a competitor already streets ahead in terms of market share, user experience (one of the best touch screens, with an app store to match).

It would take an awful lot of money to do, and it still would have a fairly high chance of failing. Better to take up the slack in the rest of the market, and avoid competition with the iPhone.

Apple Needs Motivation from MS?

I love how everyone always dismisses anything not Apple as negative, I for one think this is great, the iPhone needs some competition, I personally would like to see more features and such, without competition apple has no reason to step up their game and add innovative features, I welcome any and all newcomers to the market including Microsoft.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Apple is its own toughest competitor. What other company in this universe would kill the best selling MP3 player in the world and replace it with a completely new model? (Ans: None) Apple is always "stepping up their game", even with nothing on the horizon to challenge it. You seem to be under the misguided impression that Apple is in it just for the money. (OK, they are in it for the money, but it's not their number one priority, not by a long shot.)

Another Palm Pre without the only thing that, possibly, it's worth a try, the Web OS. And we already have plenty of phones with win Mobile.

Also, I don't like crampy kb in a phone, I can't push one button at time.

WTH is this??

Apple is quite particular about what they put their logo on. MS, obviously, isn't.

"Turtle." No kidding.

The tag line should be: "We are Microsoft. We copy others all the time."
I love it how people think there's actually a credible time window for copying the Pre, how a product that's been in development for ages and gone through evolutionary fine tuning of the design could actually be a copy of something that was launched 3 months ago. "Hey, that looks better than ours, let's scrap two years of work and knock together a new one in a couple of weeks!"

Both the Pre and the, um, "Turtle" are kinda-sorta copies of the iPhone's giant screen concept, but both companies decided to put it in a roundish rather than a squarish shell. In-de-pen-dent-ly.

It doesn't seem special to me...just another iPhone clone. In order for someone to unthrone Apple as the coolest and most desirable handset, someone is going to have to create a device that is so far out of this world and has an amazing killer feature.

In 2007, Apple did that with the iPhone. There was not another phone like it. In 2001, Apple did it with the iPod. What makes a successful product is a feature that no one else has and is useful (IE: the WiFi sharing on the original Zune was unique but it wasn't too useful).

Maybe Microsoft will see some success but for right now, the only company that can build a phone better than the iPhone is Apple.

I'm sorry, I must have missed it when Apple invented the phone. Let alone, invented a touch screen phone. No one gasps when Apple releases another laptop that looks identical to, OTHER LAPTOPS.

For crying out loud, this is a Sharp slider phone, rebranded by M$ and marketed for teens. This looks like it might be successful, believe it or not. I can tell you, without even looking at specs, that a phone, easily allowing teens to type and text, is going to be a good design. I'll take my HTC Dream over and HTC Hero any day of the week, BECAUSE I CAN TYPE, not touch.

Screaming about chunkiness and M$ using copy machines, etc, is lame. It is a phone, with phone features and a real keyboard. You guys are as bad as Apple shooting down Apps because of Duplicate Functionality. Wait to hold judgement over a device before you get too caught up in the who-can-bash-competitors-the-hardest race.

I thought this was supposed to be the fabled "iPhone Killer."

So, did MS just do this for the lulz?

Microsoft seems to be in no hurry to challenge the iPhone domination if they really are keen on making these devices, or they simply do not care?

These beauties will also include Zune services and apps. Winner!

Seriously, these pics can't be real. Has to be fake or some kind of joke in order to throw us all off the scent.

It will have nothing on the iPhone even as far as aesthetics as we can see but one thing it might have is great reception and working applications as it most likey won't be stuck in a contract with AT&T lol.

Those pics have got to be fake.

It doesn't even seem to be trying to mimic the iPhone in any way. It is going after the same demographic, but does so by offering the easy typing keyboard instead of the media focus of the iPhone. Anything that pressures Apple to make the iPhone better and likely cheaper is good in my book.

But I'd never buy either of those ;)

THIS is Microsofts answer to the iPhone?

Sorry, this looks like crap and will be running 6.5 which is a warmed over version of the ancient and problematic 6.0.

This has got to be a joke.

These throwbacks aren't anywhere in the remote vicinity of being able to pressure Apple, tbh.

It's either a joke (fake pics), or just a way to throw everyone off the scent before the *real* Zune phone appears . . . in maybe two years??

Either way, fake or not, I'm not surprised these "things" are somehow being associated with MS.

Competition is good but...

I have one word for these

Evolutionary

Nothing special about them, and they are not "iPhone killers." While the iPhone has its faults, you cannot say that Apple and the iPhone did not change the direction of the mobile market. The existence of the phrase "iPhone killer," like "iPod killer" before it, demonstrates the effect of the iPhone, no matter what you think of the device, OS, and/or service.

These aren't going to change the market; people will buy these to replace their old Sidekicks or whatever.
