Its not a bad looking phone at all. About the only thing I hate is how the screen rolls over the edge which to me is a silly design since you would be touching the screen while holding the phone on the sides. If it stopped just before the radius like the iphone x it would look even better to me.

Honestly the pros outweigh the cons in this list. The cons seem like minor inconveniences compared to the entire OS and apps being better and faster as you say.

Priorities I guess.

I thought the same thing. The “iPhone has” list seems more macro focused while the “Android has” list seems more micro focused. Nibbles versus big bites. With this list the iPhone is a full course meal.

I see an ugly phone with this latest Samsung model. Probably just me. My last Android phone - M8 - still looks better. But I know tastes vary and I am/was a big HTC fan since the old XDA days. While I own an 8 Plus the X is the form factor to beat. And still is based on these screen shots.

Haha...all the important stuff is on your pros list and a bunch of personal preference, nice to have are on your cons list.

That is true, which is why I'm excited to switch, as using an Android over a year bring too much slowdown. But once-a-year phone cycle works wonderfully, as remember pricewise one android a year is one iphone every two years or a year and a half. I prefer android drawbacks to iphone drawbacks from my personal experience :)

Did anybody comment on the Power Pins for the Attachment Cameras ???

Way to Go Samsung !

"Thunder" he we come !

As soon as the pins, & their purpose, becomes Mainstream Knowledge, AAPL is gonna tank !

It's what AAPL should have done, instead of their stupid (& costly) Face ID replacing the much better Touch ID.

Oh, I thought you meant switch from an S8 to an S9 - you said apple sucked there at the end.

Actually, I still don't know what you mean - you're not making any sense.

No notch, NO THANKS
Is this a meme or something?

Main thing that drove me to Samsung was the S-Pen on the Note 8. Great for my workflow. Not as interested in the S8 or S9 since it lacks the incremental functionality over an iPhone 8 than the Note series has.

If Apple ever comes up with a great embedded pen, widgets, edge menus and a few other things, I may be enticed to take another look at iOS. But for now, the Note 8 (not necessarily the S8/S9) is the better product overall for me.

I wish they could find a way to hide the inside an iPad pro. Have it charge wirelessly inside the iPad or something

As a Samsung S8 owner I'll be very excited to switch.

Iphone has:
- better quality apps that crash less often
- less noticeable slowdown form usage
- better ui
- better backup, phone location service
- an ecosystem with the macs

but Android has:
- properly grouped notifications instead of the iOS pile of garbage
- watching videos AS THEY ARE MEANT TO BE without the notch
- USB C to charge both my laptop and my phone, Apple is just a laughing stock with one half pushing the USB-C future so hard with the Macbooks the accessories can't catch up and the other lagging one year behind other phones with the lightning port
- ultra low power saving mode, when you can just call for 3 days on 10% charge
- "close all" apps button
- headphone jack
- customizable keyboards when you can ALWAYS have the letters and the number row on one screen, entering long password with letters and digits on iOS has been infuriating to say the least
- did I mention I got it for half the price?
- homescreen and app screens are different - meaning I have and alphabetical separate list of apps which I can drag to any of the main screens, very conveniet
- quick charging at 1.5x speed of iPhone X which also comes free by the way
- I can see battery percentage on top
- If I turn of wifi or bluetooth from quick access, it REALLY turns off. With Apple, turning off WiFi or Bluetooth just drops the current connection. What's the point?!

In conclusion - sorry Apple, you need to try harder.
I'm going to point out that some of your cons aren't cons—as in, they aren't deficiencies on iOS. If you want, you can add the battery percentage to the top of your phone, for instance. Video by default doesn't get cut off by the notch, you have to manually expand it to fill the screen and crop the edge. Also, you don't want a "close all" apps button. It will literally worsen your battery life.

As for the Galaxy, on looks and fit and finish there's no contest between Apple and Samsung. Samsung just makes cheaper looking and feeling hardware without the same careful attention to detail. But maybe this will be the year that they can actually make the ports symmetrical...

The devices are usually pretty good all-around but the major issue is the OS, Android is such a horrible OS. Been using iOS for many many years but recently decided to give Android a try being open minded. Tried it on an S7 Edge, overall a great phone but overall again what a horrible OS Android is. Used it for almost a year would not go back even if they offered me free phones and paid me to use it. The other major issue with the OS is the apps quality for the most part is horrendous I call them ninety-nine cent Chinese programmers. The phone is now used as a bathroom clock for many months, it has a great feature where the sensor turns the clock on when it detects motion and off when nobody is around. I'm going to sell the phone before it's worth a bag of peanuts but wonder if I can find a clock replacement with the same feature that is USB re-chargeable. Anybody seen one?

-Mike

Apps aren’t part of an OS. They work on top of an OS. Android has many features iOS on an iPhone still doesn’t have.

Let's be honest here, if Apple didn't exist, these phones would be pretty darn enticing. It's a good thing Apple came out with the iPhone X when they did. I think these Shamesung phones look quite amazing, although the placement of the cameras and fingerprint sensor is insanely stupid - people are still going to be smearing their greasy fingers all over the cameras.
If Apple didn’t exist, these phones wouldn’t exist.

I think this is just bad luck. For the past 8 years I bought quite a few Apple products and I had only one minor problem with the Apple TV 4th generation. I went to the store, they gave me a new one and that's it.
Is it bad luck or poor design to have one bad key on a keyboard and need a full top case replacement?

lol.

'Cause that's the epitome of Elon - focusing on customers. Tell that to the half-million folks growing old and grey waiting for their 3 while their hero is selling hats and overgrown lighters.

Say what you want about Tim Cook, but at least he's a grown-up.

I ordered a Model 3. I have a Model S. Best car I have ever owned!!! If it has a flat tire, it could be a pain, but I can get just the tire fixed.

While my MacBook Pro had a stuck command key and two wonky other keys and I needed a new top case!!!

Elon Musk is a visionary. Apple needs somebody, anybody, just one person on its leadership team to at least say WTH are we doing here? Why not do this which the customers want? Why not do this as it would sell more. Why not focus on software design by a software designer? Keep the hardware design to the hardware person. Why not have the supply chain guy figure out the dang supply chain problems. Why not use Apple’s cash to create innovative products, and reliable services/software? Why can we push our agenda with our shareholders’ money? Why not hire young people to overtake the company as we are all a bunch of old white males who are out of touch with reality? Why not step back and see if we have some talent and let those people give us real ideas.

There probably isn’t one Steve Jobs out there, but I’m sure 20 to 30 engineers, marketing people, software people, designers and etc can come up with visionary products and services that JUST WORK! What the customer needs, and only what works. Promise stuff on a date and deliver! Those were the things that made Apple great.

Make Apple Great Again!

Samsung is planning to unveil its next-generation smartphones, the Galaxy S9 and S9+, at an event that's set to take place at Mobile World Congress on February 25, but ahead of that date, several images have leaked depicting the South Korean company's new flagship device.

Noted leaker Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, has shared several renders of the new Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ on Twitter, along with details about what to expect from the device that will compete directly with Apple's own iPhone X.

Galaxy S9
Samsung's two new smartphones will continue to use the same general design as the Galaxy S8 devices, with slim bezels and a near edge-to-edge Super AMOLED display. Unlike the iPhone X, the S9 and S9+ have black bars at the top and bottom of the device, with the top bar housing components like the camera and the microphone.

galaxys9plus.jpg

Galaxy S9+
The larger of the two devices, the Galaxy S9+, features a new vertical dual camera design at the back of the phone, similar to the iPhone X. Samsung's invite for its February 25 event suggested camera improvements will be a main focal point for the two new flagship devices.

Rumors suggest the Galaxy S9 will feature a single 12-megapixel camera with variable aperture from f/1.5 to f/2.4, while the S9+ will feature the same variable aperture 12-megapixel camera paired with a second 12-megapixel camera with a fixed aperture.

Samsung isn't ready to introduce a robust Face ID-style feature in its smartphones (but it will continue to offer less secure iris scanning and facial recognition as options), so the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will feature fingerprint sensors located at the back of the devices. Samsung has, however, repositioned the fingerprint sensor on both devices to below the camera instead of to the right of it.

Samsung plans to offer its Galaxy S9 and S9+ in Midnight Black, Lilac Purple, Titanium Gray, and Coral Blue. The Samsung Galaxy S9 will measure in at 5.8 inches like the iPhone X, while the S9+ will measure in at 6.2 inches. Android Central has additional details about Samsung's upcoming S9 and S9+ for those who are curious about what to expect to see in the devices that will directly compete with the iPhone X.

Can I be honest here? What happened to the days of early phones? When design and innovation were so thrilling from model to model? The days of the Nokia NGage, the billions of faceplates for a Nokia 5110, the unbelievably thin Moro Rzr V3, the weird Kyocera, the sexy LG Chocolate, the insane wild creation models from Nokia.

Those were the days I loathe, me and my ‘memberberries’. Nowadays it’s hey, new phone, 3 colors, same shape, same everything, only 5% faster. Man I miss the early phones.

The fingerprint sensor is still on a terrible location. That re-imagined camera will still get plenty of fingerprints.
There is something I find it fascinating with Samsung. It loves packing as much stuff as possible on the phone, regardless if people find any use for it. A good example is Bixby. I had the S8 for few months and man. that Bixby button was just getting on my way. Never used, always used the Google's assistant which is great.

Main thing that drove me to Samsung was the S-Pen on the Note 8.

I guess you are on a very minority. I have seen Note users that did't even know it is there.
For me Steve Jobs was right. The best pen is the one you have always with you. Pen for me would get lost in the first week and if I have to be honest I don't know why I would use it instead of using just the finger. It have worked great for me since 2007.

Not sure if you're trolling, but you do know that the iPhone X also has a bezel, but in the shape of a notch.

I don't think he is trolling. Basically, if Essential can make bezel free phone, don't see why Apple and Samsung can't. These Galaxy 9 bezels are aqtually quite thick for a Samsung product on 2018. Stitch all these bezels together and it would create a Super Mega Notch.

Flush camera lens.
Apple take note.

And vertical too.
Guess who is better at taking a "Note" ;)

How do you avoid smudging the camera lens when the fingerprint ID sensor is so close to it? Seems that would be a common occurrence.

Speaking of fingerprint ID, I’ll miss its advantages when Apple eventually retires it. My girlfriend and and I imprinted our fingerprints on each other’s phones rather than memorize each other’s PIN number. She can access my phone for me when I’m unable, and vise versa. For instance, I can give her my phone to pay for something while I do something else.

Ugly, same as the last one. Won’t beat Apple in performance, security, privacy, apps, ecosystem, and support. To top it all off, runs android. I’d certainly give competition a look if it challenged Apple in any of those ways, but Samsung isn’t even trying. I think Google and the Pixel line is the next best thing to an iPhone.

Let's talk performance. The iPhone X has one of the best mobile processors on the market, yet isn't really a stronger performer than the Note8 or possibly even the S8 in a lot of areas. The phone is getting held back by iOS 11.

Damn, that's ugly.

Strange I walked in an played with an iPhone X today (again). Came out with the same opinion. HATE IT.

Miss the simplicity of the button. Hate the ears at the top.

And today I noticed how large the black bezel actually is. It sat beside an iPhone 8 Plus and had the same size unusable area. iBooks felt worse on it with the taller display.

So I'm thinking next year with be an 8+ or whatever is released like it. I hope they put the same camera in as X+ but they tend to use that as a point of difference. There are people who like a better camera in a smaller screen or lower spec or older screen... but they wont listen to that in the quest to justify the price of the latest and greatest. :(

Having for the first time ever managed to sit out an upgrade year, the urge has lessened. Plenty of other latest tech to get excited over. A phone these days is pretty much a phone.

(Case you think I'm hating on Apple, I LOVE my Watch 3 - thought charging it daily would be a killer and relegate it to toy category but it is no hassle and lasts longer than I thought it would. Blows the FitBits I've had out of the water).

Jury still out on HomePod... guess we hear it soon. Two would be tempting if the adaptive stereo works well and does fill a room and surround you.

it stops a long way further in than the radius! half the distance might have looked like the "fullscreen" the adverts promise.

Go to Apple site and select "Compare" and look at the photos: the highlights on the sides and bottom bezel are noticeably thicker than the iPhone 8 and 8+. Designed to convince you the X has narrower bezels. Side by side in real life they look the same: https://www.apple.com/au/iphone/compare/
