The new iOS 10 update, released today, appears to be causing problems for some iPad and iPhone owners who are installing it over-the-air. On the MacRumors forums, we're seeing multiple reports from users who have attempted to install iOS 10 and have had their devices put into recovery mode, requiring a restore.

It does not seem to be limited to a single device, but most reports from iPad owners are coming from those who have the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, which has had trouble with new software releases in the past. Multiple iPhone models also appear to be affected. From MacRumors forum member bit_bucket: Users who have their iOS 10 devices bricked by the update may need to do an iTunes restore if the update fails, which will erase all data. Some users have had their iPhones updated successfully and haven't needed to restore, but it has failed for other users. Here's the message users are receiving:In light of the installation issues some users are facing, those who are concerned about their devices being sent into recovery mode and bricked should hold off on downloading the iOS 10 update for the time being until more information can be uncovered. A backup before installing is also recommended.

Ugh- I'm the guy who tells everyone to update, cause- you know- I'm excited. Now here I am with an iPhone 6s Plus stuck in recovery mode. My Mac is a MacBook Pro late 2007 and is to say the least... sluggish running the latest El Capitan. As of right now, it's extracting the iOS 10.0.1 download I just did... fingers crossed!!

I attempted to update my 6S OTA and it got bricked. Then, I connected it to iTunes and got prompted to update to 10.0.1, which fixed the phone (with no need for a restore)

Great my phone is bricked. Thanks Apple for everything. My current phone does not work and i can't get a new one through Upgrade program

iPad failed...now going back to previous version...
THANK YOU APPLE....

Hopefully the iPhone 6 will come through....will let all now

Was a long time Apple fan but am very rapidly loosing a lot trust.

It took my 6S 36 minutes to download over via WIFI and then promptly shut off and now is bricked.

Literally at the apple store right now trying to get my phone fixed. I'm really pissed off. I don't have a computer at home so I can't just plug my phone into iTunes! I have a toddler in school right now that I can't get a call when he needs to be picked up, and some of have to work Apple!!!!!!!!!!!

Another one bites the dust!

My 6s update failed miserably too. Using my iTunes on my MacBook to restore the update...here's hoping! 3/4th done...

SUCCESS! The software restore update worked on my MacBook. Hope it does for you guys too!!

I just finished the OTA update on my 6S and mine is doing something worse. It's been sitting on the Apple logo (like it does after a reboot) for the past 15 minutes. I can't do anything to make it move on. Every now and then the screen will flash like it's going to move past it but the Apple logo just comes back on. Plugging into iTunes says it can't connect to my iPhone because it's locked. I might be REALLY screwed.

Don't know whats worse, if Apple's incompetence or people whining because they risked to update on day 1, considering Apple's current QA record throughout the year, some of you have proven to be very smart, congrats!

Not only should one not update with new major releases, but you should wait for at least 2 point releases. This is the new Apple.

What I can't understand is this is the same OTA software update that us beta testers got last week, and our updates went through fine.

How did Apple manage to screw this up over the course of a week?

The OTA update screwed both of our phones. I got the "plug into iTunes" screen and did so and finally got mine updated. My wifes is downloading now, hopefully it works. I'd recommend HIGHLY against using the OTA update.

Bricked phones can't be restored or updated through iTunes. If you can do either, your phone is not bricked.
