I must be lucky....2017 Dodge Challenger and I have had ZERO issues with CarPlay.
iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 6 have all been used in my car without issue

I have a 2017 Ford Escape with the Sony Audio System with Sync 3. My I phone 6 Plus interfaces with the Apple Car play with no problems. My phone software is IOS 11.2.2. I had never bothered trying to use the sync 3 mobile apps because I really never needed them. A few weeks ago, I read the various on line posts about a soft ware up date to the Ford Sync 3 system. My current Sync 3 is version 2.2. This update to version 3 would allow iPhone users to run the Navigation App Waze through the Sync Mobile App connection and the Waze Map and all functions would be displayed on my Vehicle Touch Screen. I decided to see how the Sync Mobile App System worked with my iphone. I downloaded some of the suggested mobile apps to my phone, disabled Apple Car Play and the Sync mobile apps wouldn’t display properly or open. I got the apps to show up on the screen, but they weren’t displaying the appropriate Icons. I would get a symbol for a couple apps that looked like two horizontal horse shoes with a line in the center. When I would Touch the App on the screen, it would give me a menue option which when I pressed it, it would only have an exit app option. Obviously the Sync 3 mobile apps were not going to work with my iPhone. Since my Sync 3 is version 2.2, I went by my local Ford Dealership to see if they had any vehicles with Sync 3 with the new software version 3.0. The salesman opened a 2018 Expedition with Sync 3 Version 3.0 and we went through the steps to pair my phone, connect via USB and followed the instructions for using Sync 3 mobile apps. It didn’t work. We spent about 40 minutes trying to get the Sync 3 mobile apps to show from my phone and run on the System. No luck. When I got home I spent over an hour on the phone with a Ford Sync Tech Advisor who couldn’t resolve the issue, and they said it was an Apple issue. I then called Apple and talked to an IPhone Tech Rep for over an hour and her thought was it’s a Ford Issue. She did open a case to send to her engineering department and she is going to call me on Sunday with an update. Before I left the Ford Dealership, the sales man looked like a deer in the headlights. I asked him how was he going to sell 2018 vehicles with expensive premium sound systems that won’t connect properly with IPhones IOS 11 software. He said he needed to bring this to the attention of his manager. As it stands, my IPhone works, Apple Car Play works, but the much touted Ford Sync Mobile App which is suppose to connect and run apps from my IPhone is dead in the water.

My CarPlay works fine until something takes over the MMI Screen (e.g. Parking Cameras/Sensors) once control is handed back to CarPlay it just sticks at the MMI Main Menu with CarPlay selected, trying to select it just causes the menu to bounce but not reconnect. Music plays and I can still control music from the steering wheel but not get to the UI. If I unplug the USB Cable and reconnect it comes back up until the next time something takes over the MMI Screen.

It's only done this since the latest iOS updates, though I have recently updated to iPhone X so I can't say for sure which is the cause.

    This is on a 2017 Audi A4 B9

After spending hours with Ford Sync Techs on the phone and Apple IPhone Techs, I was unable to get anyone to help me with the issue of my Sync 3 Mobile apps not loading or running correctly.

After total frustration, I decided that there had to be a way for this issue to be resolved. I decided to do a master reset of my Sync 3 System to factory settings. This erases any navigation addresses, phone connections etc. Doing this reset also removed my connection to my Ford Pass account.

Essentially I was starting as if the car was brand new with no App data or phone data loaded. I also did a restart on my IPhone 6 and I had it in the locked mode. I started the vehicle, had to pair my phone again. I then opened the Sync Controls on the vehicle. I made sure Apple Car Play was disabled. I then opened the Apple Car Play Apps that I had downloaded to my phone. I made sure they were opened and running. After connecting my IPhone via the USB port, the mobile sync Apps started opening and the app icons displayed correctly and even better, they worked.

Because Sync 3 mobile apps were designed to be voice operated, I still need to learn the commands to properly utilize the apps to their full capabilities. You can open and do things with the apps on the touch screen so I was able to get them to run properly.

What a huge relief, I was able to fix the issue without Apple or Ford help. I was also able to utilize Apple Car Play as well, but you can’t have both Apple Car Play and Sync Mobile apps enabled at the same time. The best news is now that I was able to get the Sync Mobile Apps to run correctly.

I will now be ready and waiting for the Sync 3 software 3.0 which will allow me to utilize my favorite Nav App “Waze”. To sum up my resolution of the Mobile Apps running in Sync 3 requires you do a Master reset of the system. You have to disable Apple Car Play and enable mobile apps. The approved Ford mobile apps have to be opened and running on your phone. iPhones must be connected via USB and Android must be connected viaBluetooth. I hope this helps some of you to get your Sync IOS issues resolved. Good luck!

A little advice. Break up into paragraphs and whittle down your thoughts. On a forum people are mostly only going to read a few sentences and when they see a LARGE wall of continues words (no paragraphs) they simply TL;DR.

Similar behaviour on my 2017 B9. In addition Apple Carplay disappears, when the car draws more electric energy, like when re-starting the engine in stop/start mode. Also often the connection manager shows that there is no iPhone. Problem might be related to instabil power supply - as a guess.

Question for carplay folks: Is it possible for Apple to update the CarPlay app (should it ever actually get around to doing so), or is one stuck with whatever version is installed with their car when they buy it?

It would be up to the car manufacturer to update the app on the car. Not an Apple thing they could do A variety of car manufactures have done updates or told people updates are coming

2017 sonata sport.. car play runs just fine here for everything I notice.

Some minor issues however is if I’m manually controlling the phone I don’t like how my messages app appears on the screen I believe if you are manually controlling the phone it should stay on maps if that’s what you have open.

CarPlay runs entirely on the iPhone, with the car head unit really just acting as a display (in simple terms). CarPlay gets "updated" with new versions of iOS.

CarPlay runs on your iPhone, there’s minimal support in the car. All it does is show the image what the iPhone sends and pass back the location data of where you touched the screen.

CarPlay has been updated with most major iOS updates and some 0.1 releases.

Great, thanks for the info. I do wish Apple would allow other navigation apps to access carplay. If anything, it would spur apple to improve their own product.

I agree but the original question was are you stuck with what you have with original purchase of car. There is some intelligence on car side as we have seen differences from people reporting issues on different cars and reports that car manufactures have done updates on their sides

Helps to check your lightning cable and or the lightning connector on the phone itself. I was getting random dropouts on CarPlay. The lightning cable made an “OK” connection but was definitely looser that other iPhones in the household. Tried removing the gunk inside with a toothpick but wound up using a small paper clip to remove something that was stuck on the far corner inside the port. No more dropouts for me.

Are you still having problems? My radio bleeps out when care play is activated. Radio is fine when phone is not plugged in. Apple is trying to solve problem, unsuccessfully.

I download Apple Music to my iPhone 7, connect to the radio via Carplay. My playlists show up and I can select a song. When go to another playlist the songs are there, but will not play. It appears Carplay loses sync, but with only Apple Music. I can move around within the playing playlist. I have cellular turned off for Apple Music. Is there a fix or am I doing something wrong with the settings?

I have had similar issues with my 2017 Honda Pilot. When I turn on the right turn signal, the screen switches to a camera mounted on the passenger side mirror. When I am using Apple Maps, the camera will come on, and when it turns off, the CarPlay unit does not return to Maps, it goes back to the Playing screen.

This problem had temporarily fixed itself when I updated to 11.2.5, but now running the 11.3.public beta, it has started again. I have to manually touch the Maps icon to return to navigation. Very annoying.

My Alpine ilx007 headunit won't recognize my iPhoneX. It's USB only, and posts a USB error message. This stated on upgraded to iOS11.2.5. It worked ok, except for looping podcasts and not synching/deleting podcasts, under iOS11.2.3. Switching cables doesn't help and in fact an iPhone6 with iOS11.2.3 still works fine. So it seems Alpine didn't update or Apple's update can't be accommodated. No help from Alpine or Apple. The folks that did the install (and they did it well) say there's nothing to do but hope for relief with iOS12.

Well, you could either use the generic feedback page https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html or sign up for the iOS 11.3 beta, so you could give direct feedback to Apple on the problems you're having with your ILX-007.

Did you escalate this with Alpine? (given their ILX line ONLY work with CarPlay, they really need to use their relationship with Apple to get it fixed). The fix is most likely required on the CarPlay software on the iPhone...word is what's on the head units is little more than an emulator/shell.

I just installed an Alpine ilx-107 wireless Carplay on my Toyota RAV4 and the directional arrow on Apple Maps is pointed to the opposite direction while I'm driving, anyone else having this issue?

Opposite direction or always pointing north. I don't know about the Alpine but on my screen if I touch the screen a bar opens up on top and there is an arrow - pressing it switches from pointing North to pointing in direction of travel - again not sure exactly on Alpine but..

Alpine has that too. When I switch it to the direction of travel, the "arrow" does move to the correct direction but pointed the opposite way. Same when I switch it to point North. Somehow the compass acts up.

Sorry that didn't help - sounds weird as if there is some problem with Alpine unit.
