Exactly what is/isn't enabled for the 3G in iOS 4.0?

Has anyone produced a comprehensive list of what features are not enabled on the 3G?

I'm probably going to wait a couple of days before upgrading anyway just to see if any unforeseen problems come up, but I would like some more 3G-specific info before deciding to upgrade.

I only have a 3G but have been using 4.0 for a few weeks, and I really like folders. Not many other benefits I have seen for 3G, but folders alone are a huge help. In fact I still haven't even finished organizing all my apps in folders, because I had so many apps installed in the first place.

The update has been quick and flawless for me.

iPhone 3GS here, everything runs smooth but no difference in battery life. But I do now have everything on my first home screen because nearly everything is in folders!

Game Center

What happened to the game center? I still have it on my 3GS with 4.0 GM. I've invited friends but there is nothing to do aside from create and account. What is the intention?

I don't have the option to select a wallpaper image on my iPod Touch 2G. Is this feature not supported on the iPod Touch? I can't imagine why this feature wouldn't be supported. Surely Apple wouldn't say that the iPod can't handle displaying wallpaper.

It has more to do with how Apple implemented the wallpaper feature, using OpenGL ES 2.0. Only the 3rd gen touch, 3GS and iPhone 4 support ES 2.0.

They are using pixel shaders and the like for the wallpaper, which seems odd, but it's the reason why it doesn't work all that fast on the 3G and 2nd gen touch if you do turn it on.

No - folders within folders can't be done - you won't have dozens in your games folder because you can only have 12.

Looks like Categories is still going to be the way to go then once this is jailbroken. 12 apps is weaksauce. :\

maybe i'm showing my age here... but i've never seen a background image on the home page that looks better than just the black screen.

every background i've seen looks terrible, and only makes it way harder to see the icons.

i know people have been clamoring for background images... i just think they all suck. is it just me?

No, it isn't just you! It's also Apple who for the past 3 years thought "Less is more" and who have now given in to the stupid crowds that want to see this terrible pixel mess. Luckily we can just change our backgrounds.

Visual Voicemail doesn't work.

mine didn't either. called voicemail once, then once i hung up i got a notification to enter my password. well, since i forgot it, i had to call AT&T to reset, but once i entered the new password i was prompted to set up a greeting, then visual VM was set up again.

not a seamless upgrade, but darn good. i'm very happy with iOS4

iOS4 iPhone 3G

I am pretty disappointed with the new OS. I understood that multitasking would not work when it was announced, which is fine. But not to be able to change your background image and the inability to lock the orientation with a 3G device I think is pretty lame of apple not to include. I would say IF your an iPhone 3G user, and you don't have a need for folders, don't bother with updating. Also the update screwed my entire icon/screen arrangement! After all that, I sure am glad I pre-ordered an iPhone 4 and should be getting it on Thursday!! FULL COMPATIBILITY WILL BE A WONDERFUL THING!

Ok Apple, i understand limiting multitasking. But...

What a 3G can't handle a bleeding desktop wallpaper? Get real :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Where did my MAIL folders go??

Glad to have App folders, but where in the world are my MAIL folders?? All I am seeing is the Inbox for each of my accounts.

I found a work around for the long backup.

Run a manual backup up in itunes.
Then run a restore.
It will ask if you want to update and restore. Say yes.
Once the update to 4.0 you will need to activate the phone in itunes
After activation it will ask if it is a new phone or if you want to restore. Select restore.
4.0 is updated without the hours of backup.
Enjoy.

So for us original iPhone users, are we completely SOL on this upgrade? I recall reading that much of the new features won't work on older phones, but I wasn't sure if I'd get a chance to upload the new iOS4 or if I'll just be stuck with the latest 3G firmware that's on it now.

The GameCenter app in the Gold Master was intended for developers only. It will be released to the general public later this year.

GameCenter is a network that app developers can tap into with certain Apple provided APIs. It's not an app that will be released to the public later.

SOOOOOOOOOOOO, is there any reason to upgrade a 3G. I mean is the phone to weak to change the backgroud? I am getting the 4 in a few days but so far am very upset with how Apple is treating ios4 on the 3G. I mean if nothing is available then why offer the upgrade for it. Instead just say time for a new phone, not a new upgrade. ios4 on 3G:( iPhone4:D

os4 Update

Updated this morning right at the time they released it. Pros: downloaded in about 2 minutes and was up in running in about 5 minutes total.

Cons: it's pretty buggy. When I opened clock, the green phone bar across the top came up even though I wasn't on the phone, and the time started progressing rapidly. Additionally I dropped 2 calls even though both parties had full bars. Also the text message screen scrolls up randomly when you are sending a text message, so you can't see the last text sent to you (happens only sometimes).

I have not had any problems with apps crashing or not working properly, just some software bugs that they will probably fix soon.

No 3rd party apps working post-update

Anyone else having problems with apps crashing/not starting. Zinio for example will not start (nor will Tagesanzeiger, swiss newspaper app), very upsetting :(

On my 2nd gen ipod touch (8GB), now not a single one of my 3rd party apps will run. They all launch and then immediately quit. Every single one. Only Apple's own apps will run.

I can't be the only one having this problem!

It has more to do with how Apple implemented the wallpaper feature, using OpenGL ES 2.0. Only the 3rd gen touch, 3GS and iPhone 4 support ES 2.0.

I have the wallpaper section in my settings on my 2nd gen ipod touch, and can successfully select and "set" a wallpaper image. It just doesn't appear.

I don't understand the difference between Cellular Data Off and Airplane Mode On. They both disable the cell connection don't they?

Airplane mode disables all wireless radios including WiFi, Bluetooth, and even the GPS receiver I think (not sure on GPS)

3G questions

So does the fast app switching at least work with the 3G? is there any reason to upgrade? I have been keeping my phone on 3.12 for the hacked baseband so I can tether to my work PC, which has proven to be really useful when away from the office.

Also, does iOS 4 allow bluetooth keyboard tethering now?
