i'm still frustrated with the sleep button behavior on my iphone 5. I have to push it several times for the phone to lock. it's driving me mad! its not hardware related, it started right after the 7.1 update. there is a long thread on the apple support forums.

This is so basic APPLE, how can you miss that?

I'd say it's hardware, I had the same problem with my 5 and so has a friend with his 5. Both were swapped under the warranty, I suggest you do the same if you still can.

Since upgrading to 7.1.1 my iPhone 5 thinks I'm in landscape in any app that supports it. I've tried resetting with no luck. Only workaround seems to be turning on portrait lock from the home screen and then going in to those apps.

I don't see why Apple or carriers do this. Carriers make money off people going over their data plan. It would benefit the carrier greatly if people are going over they data limit.
I would too like to be able to download iOS updates over cellular data

Because Apple are a soft target and will be held responsible because stupid people who click and download anything via mobile data will not want to take responsibility for their actions so will blame Apple for letting it happen.

Simple solution to a widespread issue.

My comment wasn't really targeted at you :)

I agree with you. These last set of updates are certainly useful for some people, no arguing about that, but not for me (I'm talking about the iPad, for the iPhone it definitely was an improvement).

I'm not pissed because they didn't add a feature I wanted (even though I have the right to be), but because they introduced a major bug and taking their time to fix it. I just want it to work as it should and don't care about any visual gimmick. The updates are free and they don't really have to add anything but when I install one, I expect at least the older features to continue working properly.

The most important thing is, as you have said, that everyone is entitled to be disappointed, which is the point I was trying to make with my previous message. Also, if we're not gonna rant here, then where? :)

Noted. Yes you are in the right place. And I agree, every since iOS 7 was released it has been less than stellar on iPads. Its better now since 7.1 but still not 100% I guess.

Holy Crap, it's downloading now (iphone 5 connected to iTunes) and it says 1.26 GB for 7.1.1 update. Why is this so large with such little changes????

When you do the update through iTunes it gets the whole OS install, rather than a smaller delta one that is used for OTA.

Because you're downloading the whole IPSW firmware file, not the partial update like OTA.

For reference the Samsung 4.4 firmware is 3.x gb or so.

With iOS 7 they introduced both automatic app updates and up to 100mb mobile data updates. There are some apps like Facebook that MANY users have installed- think how much bandwidth that can use when 100mb updates are put out. Also, you don't tend to receive alerts about iOS updates immediately- they are staggered, or at least COULD be.

Your justification may be the official one but it's not sound in my opinion. I think it's an oversight and that this limit could be upped to at least 50mb, or made carrier specific.

I don't have wi-fi, I just moved as I said in my post. No proper internet for a week :(

I'm a dummy though, I just realised I can update over iTunes (on a laptop using a tethered connection from my phone!) Still, pretty annoying, so much for post-PC eh?!

edit: uh, except you seem to have to download the full update rather than the delta update with iTunes...
We'll I think what the thing is because software updates can be changing in size depending upon the version .. If it's a big change I can go upto 1GB... If it's X.1 it can go upto 30MB... If it's small it can go as Low as 10mb... That doesn't mean apple will allow you to download it on cellular.. There are certain things that should be kept on wifi... Because cellular May be slow, take more battery, and be more expensive... As in case of apps .. They have a limit of 100mb .. But when we software update the whole software has to reset .. So I think that's something that had to do with wifi and cellular..:

iOS 7.1.1 Bug Fixes And Changes

I'd say it's hardware, I had the same problem with my 5 and so has a friend with his 5. Both were swapped under the warranty, I suggest you do the same if you still can.

Unfortunately the warranty is over. But i did take the time to read through the thread on the apple support forums again. Someone there found out that the problem could be handled by pressing the left side of the button instead of the middle. It worked for me. Still funny though, because for me and others on this thread the problem occurred right after the software update. But this solution points to a hardware issue after all.

This leaves me frustrated still. it's just a frustration of another kind.

my phone is 16 months old and now i need to repair it, at my own cost. I was just using it the way it was intended to be used.

PS: this is the second time Apple really disappointed me. First was when after the iOS 7 update my iPad 3 was made unusable (super-laggy typing).

I haven't noticed it after the update to iOS 7.1.1

I haven't either. Let's hope it stays that way. It started spinning on me every time I closed an app and nothing else was running. It would start spinning then. I won't be able to tell until later on if it's completely fixed or not.

Wtf! Just noticed that none of my games have audio after the upgrade on my iPad Air! Other apps still, play sound fine.

Edit never mind, looks like something went screwy with the lock/mute switch when I upgraded. Had to go into settings and change it back and forth.

Anyone noticing a change with the signal strength meter? Since updating I am seeing 3 or 4 bars pretty constant whereas before I typically had 4 or 5 bars most always. (in the same area of course). Wondering if they re-calibrated the meter to be more accurate OR if they actually reduced the power on the receivers/transmitters maybe in the modem firmware. Seems at some point in the iOS7 series, including the betas for 7 and 7.1, the meter seem'ed to have gotten stronger (more bars) if I remember but now with 7.1.1 its back like it was in iOS6. Maybe just a coincidence over the past couple days that my VZW signal is just worse due to weather conditions, clouds or whatever.

Unfortunately I don't think any of us with iOS 7.1.1 are seeing any bars at all. ;)

That said, sounds like I'll need to keep a closer eye on it all to see if I notice anything different since the update.

HAHA ok sorry DOTS i meant. Years and years and years of signal bars now all of a sudden Apple decides they should be DOTS. Anyway I did see a thread in the Apple forums stating this exact symptom. Folks are loosing a dot or two from what they had prior to the update. My gut feeling is the meter was falsely reporting before and now its correct. I would have 5 dots quite a lot of the time at home since iOS 7 + but if I recall more like 3 or 4 back in old days of iOS 5 and 6. I remember being all hyped when 7 seem'ed to "increased" my signal :)

Apple giveth and they taketh away. lol

Perhaps resetting network settings could help with that?

When buying an Apple product, I would seriously consider buying AppleCare+. It's worth the investment most of the time.

I've found two bugs... First the image .. Overlapping of the update all on the wish list icon in the App Store...

2nd .. There appears a loading sign on the home screen which rotates next to your wifi icon when apparently nothing is loading or downloading..
Cause : go into the App Store , go in your purchsed apps, download an old purchased and then immediately hit the stop button when it appears.. Go back into the home screen, the icon of loading will appear.. If this doesn't work, try downloading an app from your purchsed after stoping an app from downloading..

Solution; turnoff and turn on ..
Or download the app which you stopped previously..
