If you find a product with such a huge market that launches and is perfect on Day 1, please let me know.

There's just no excuse. If people come across major, obvious bugs within the first day of using the new o/s, then that's just plain shoddy. Tim Cook said that he's had the i6 and i6+ "for months" - and presumably so have many Apple engineers & employees. If this version of iOS clearly wasn't ready for general release then it shouldn't have been released. Sure software gets regular updates to improve features etc, but updates shouldn't be needed from Day One to cure obvious bugs. After the iOS7 debacle, Apple needed iOS8 to come out of the blocks firing on all cylinders. If there are two things Apple are famous for, it's their operating systems and the premium build quality of their hardware. Both have taken a substantial hit since Jobs passed IMO.

Really? The guy responsible for the roll out of the new Maps app?

Hey, that was genius... I loved driving into the ocean... If it hadn't been for him, I would have missed out on all the excitement. Bring him back, bring him back, bring him back.......

What he said. Forstall was an idiot for not apologising about the disastrous Maps app. Despite being so stubborn, he was insanely good at his job. iOS was fine other than the maps app. I think splitting his job's tasks, and giving them to different people, was a big mistake. I would rather see them hire a single competent person to do everything Forstall was meant to.

Google Maps was available through Google's website, as was Nokia Maps. It wasn't a dealbreaker and many people never use the maps feature at all. I'd MUCH sooner have a smooth and bug-free o/s with a dodgy maps app than a decent maps app and dodgy o/s. Besides, I'm sure it wasn't Forstall's idea to dump the integrated Google Maps and You Tube apps.

Tim Cook is slowly destroying the company and you can witness it in ALL areas.

Apple employees are happier because he's such a nice guy (no Steve Jobs pressure), but it's going to slowly turn Apple into a company like Microsoft.

Successful but crappy.

Apple employees are happier because he's such a nice guy, but quality is crumbling.
All of you complainers need to take a look at the threads for each and every major iOS update in the past. Apple has always had buggy X.0 releases. That doesn't make this any better but it certainly isn't anything new.

It's not a disaster, but basically half of the year you are stuck using beta software which they fix with .1 release. Just like iOS 7 started feeling like normal software after .1 release.

They must switch to 14-15 months timeframe. Granted it will not solve all bug problems, but it won't be that bad.

Precisely. Just because 365 days pass doesn't mean a new operating system is out of beta. I agree with moving the iOS update cycle to 1.5-2 years. That way, iOS 7.1 would be called 7.0, and 7.0.x would be public betas.

All the ruckus about errors, bugs, and performance issues would be gone. But less new mobile software would mean less iPhone sales for Apple... So Apple will stay on a yearly cycle.

Bottom line is, after iOS 7 and Ive taking control, I treat iOS x.0.x like public betas, and don't use them. I treat iOS x.1.x like a proper OS release.

That's true, but the magnitude of problems has been increasing with every release the last 2-3 years. It doesn't look good if it keeps going in this direction.

Nice. First post and it's a diatribe about how iOS 8 is a "disaster"? Glad that others also find that rather suspect.

No OS update is ever going to be bug free, but FWIW, I've found iOS 8.0 much more polished out-of-the-box than iOS 7.0. Fewer crashes, less lag, etc. iOS 7 didn't find its stride until around version 7.0.4, and in my experience so far, iOS 8 is already close to that level.

The only problems I've encountered have been with apps that were already buggy with iOS 7.1.2. For what the user encounters, iOS 8 is not a huge change from iOS 7, but the real changes to the OS are under the hood and directed more towards developers. If you haven't updated your apps, that might be a good place to start.

Much like sensationalist headlines are meant to grab page hits, this thread is more of the same.

Indeed, iOS 6 was great other than the Maps app. But that was a mapping database problem, not a software coding and design problem. Forstall did his job well. Maybe he just didn't hire enough mapping database people to work on the location database for the Apple Maps team.

I like IOS 8 and think it rocks. Speedtest on wifi shows an increase over IOS 7; while I feel that Safari is a tad slower. Overall my opinion is that IOS 8 GM is better than 7.1.2.

Apple did a bang up with job with this release and certainly no different than any other major software/hardware vendor with a major release of software. My phone is a universe away from not being usable.

Suspect? iOS 8 is unusable, there is so much not working and so many bugs it's mind boggling + it will kill battery like crazy and make every iPhone (doesn't matter which one SLOWER).

This is by far the worst iOS release ever. And that's a nice way to put it.

You can certainly delay an upgrade until the last version before a new release. I am an early adopter. Got IOS 7 immediately as did IOS 8.

Glad I did on both versions.

Yep. One of the constants with iOS updates -- complaints about bugs and missing features and battery life, etc. For those whiners who claim that the OS updates have been getting worse -- why the hell do you keep updating your devices to a X.0 release when you purport to already know how lousy they are?

After two or three successive buggy X.0 updates, wouldn't you wait for the X.1 update or not bother updating at all? I updated my 5s to iOS 8 and it runs fine. I've also kept my iPad 3 on version 6.1.3, and do not intend to change that.

Talking about a 5S. Battery life is about the same as IOS 7.1.2. And don't really find anything of substance not working; given the improvements in IOS 8.

So maybe instead of a vague generalization you can pinpoint what exactly is not working?

Oh, since when can you choose what Apple puts on a new iPhone? /s

And you're speaking for every iPhone on the planet? I must have some Chinese knock off then, because my phone has been running fine. Some minor glitches, but still much better than when iOS 7 first came out.

And again, why do you have to be first?

That's not true at all. The worst release I can remember was iOS 5 or 6 where Safari crashed constantly and the phone would randomly reboot multiple times a day. THAT was one hellacious and frustrating release. iOS 8 has yet to crash on me.

Yeah, compared to iOS 7.0, iOS 8 is much more stable. The Safari crashes happened fairly regularly until about iOS 7.0.4, and some other apps frequently crashed as well. With iOS 8, I've yet to encounter a browser crash and the only problematic apps I've seen already had stability issues before. I've not done too much extensive testing, but I haven't noticed changes with the battery life either.

The heart of the issue is that people only notice the bugs that affect them. They selfishly assume that every release must be as good or bad for everyone else as it was for them.

iOS 8 really is no different than any other x.0 iOS release. For the majority of people, it's just fine. For a lot of people, it could use a bit of work. For a few people, it's plain awful.

They only had like 7+ years to get iOS 6 right. Not surprising that they pulled it off right?

Stop talking common sense! You're ruining the click counts!

YOU GUYS. IM A SINGLE PERSON HAVING A COUPLE OF ERRORS USING NEW SOFTWARE. THEREFORE IT'S A DISASTER. IMMA BUY A GALAXY.

Like yo. Software has bugs, especially when you unleash it to millions at once who then find and report problems. It's not a disaster.

Lol. I can't imagine what some of these people do to screw up their devices so thoroughly. I never have these absurd problems. Never.

Stop talking common sense! You're ruining the click counts!

Yep! Some people think the harder they flail their arms around, the more likely it is that Apple will notice their complaints. After all, their complaints are the most important ones, because they've owned *x* amount of Apple products over *x* years, and they're going to switch to Android if their problems aren't fixed immediately.

...and that's enough MacRumors for me today.
