Over the course of both 6.x and 7.x life cycles I'd say they were about equal.
The 6.1 update was much less significant than 7.1. At the very least 7.0 was definitely not as good (and for too long) vs. its counterpart 6.0, as far as this type of comparison goes.

In your opinion. Many of the "fixes" in 7.1 were actually cosmetic tweaks, such as shortening animation times etc - I personally didn't see much more benefit than that. 7.0 was fine for me. 6.0 was fine for many, whereas I (and many others) had terrible wifi problems throughout the 6.x run on my iPhone 5, plus a very irritating playlist bug that bothered me every single day. So for me, any attempt to paint 6x as the old reliable is doomed to fail.

There were really more significant changes under the hood in 7.1 making things more stable and perform better (certainly more than just a little noticeable on some older devices that were quite noticeably worse with 7.0). What did 6.1 even do again in comparison ?

Well it didn't fix my wifi or playlist issues. Good point.

What features that were less than a year old were dropped with iOS 7?

I'm asking because I'm curious, not because I'm a huge iOS 7 fanboy. I upgraded by iPhone 4 to iOS7 after I had ordered my iPhone 5S. I figured I'd have to get used to the new look sooner than later so I jumped in.

Facetime. Apple no longer supports FaceTime on iOS6 devices that can run iOS7.

Exactly, this is shameful.

Why is it shameful? Apples' policies are not to patch older operating systems on devices that can run newer operating systems.

You know, there are alternatives to Apple. Why stay with a manufacturer where you dislike their policies and operating systems?

I had no problem sticking to what I liked, but cmon... dropping features on iOS6 already?! Granted its expected in a few years but this soon. Its quite outrageous.

This is especially true in Apple's refusal to patch the SSL bug for iPad. So my iPad stays at home and iThings that I would normally have purchased remain with Apple.

Apple does not compare to Microsoft. Microsoft discontinue support for XP in April. There was a security issue with IE. Microsoft issued the patch to XP users at the same time as other versions of Windows. Support for XP ended but Microsoft still wants to keep customers.

Apple apparently has customers to lose.

My iPad has photo content I could not afford to lose. Needed for an insurance claim. I was not going to risk pics being lost in an update.

I had an iDevice running iOS 5 with content I did not want to lose when iOS 6 was introduced. My solution at that time was to purchase an identical device and update to iOS 6.

I had a choice so I purchased a duplicate device. Now no choice, no sale.

Possibly because more things work than don't work, compared to other ones. That doesn't mean that whatever manufacturer you go with is perfect or you suddenly can't critique something about that manufacturer just because you chosen to go with them because a lot of other things work for you or even because it might be the lesser of all evils, so to say, for you. Things aren't just black or white, the full color spectrum is out there.

I think for myself personally it's a bit of both. I like both iOS 6 and 7. 6 had certain things like the animation speed and notification center that I really liked. Although many say that iOS 7.1 has iOS 6 speeds (which I don't argue), something about 6 just felt better. On 7, I love CC, activation lock, and I really like the new refreshed look. It's refreshing. iOS 8,9,10 will refine iOS to get back to where it was and even better. I can't wait to see iOS 8!

It's not like the IOS 7 interface "could be slightly better". Seems like a major showstopper for some people and tough to get past; and Jobs could have done it better and JI should be demoted end etc.

For example, someone posts the Notes app could be slightly better; the first response is not "why don't you find another phone manufacturer". I might even tend to agree and would even agree there are 100 other minor things that probably could use tweaking, which in the collective might make a big difference in the operation of IOS 8.

This is different. The emotional energy that goes into this makes me wonder why someone who hates IOS as much as they say online wants to stick with it.

In cases like that, which only represent some, someone that really liked it so much that they are that much upset where iOS 7 went. Of course doesn't apply to everyone by far, but some might certainly be like that. They want to voice their opinion and might be passionate about it, but it still doesn't necessarily meant that any other OS would be a better choice for them despite how upset they might be about the iOS 7 changes.

I have been active in this forum for over a year now and through observation I have concluded that there are 3 groups of people who come here:

The Helpers:

People like myself who take time from their day to try and help users who may be experiencing issues with iOS or have general "how do I" type questions.

The Complainers:

This group will complain just about everything Apple related. The direction the company is going (even though they hold no Apple stocks), the design choices being made and then end their statement with a "Steve Jobs would not have let this happen" and yet continue to use Apple products and purchase new ones regardless.

The Help Seekers:

This group of people actually need help and will ask for it.

You forgot about the trolls. ;)

Here's my take on iOS 7. I wasn't impressed when I updated my 4s, I griped, I regretted and then I accepted that I couldn't do anything but get used to it. For the most part I have. I have a short list of things that I really don't understand why they implemented the way they did, i.e.: why aren't wallpapers on the iPad properly scalable, the removal of full screen contact photos with incoming calls, why did the music app get such short shrift. I get that Apple is starting over from scratch with iOS 7, but I seems like they are going out of their way to undo useful features that were honed in iOS 6. In short, they threw out the baby with the bath water. I'd be curious to see what the response would be if they allowed people to downgrade to a previous version of iOS, but charged for it. Say $20-30. This would a great way to gauge the true merit of the current operating system.

These aggressive iOS 7 fans just come off as insecure. Why else would they even participate in these threads? If I were a satisfied iOS 7 user I would have no reason to argue with or insult iOS 6 users. What does it achieve?

I remember reading a thread a few months back where iOS 7 users were practically gloating and mocking people who stayed on iOS 6 because of them losing the ability to FaceTime. Where does this sort of aggression come from?

Alternatively, why do people not satisfied with iOS 7 still post here? Back when the first beta was introduced and 7.0 was officially released, I could understand the complaints, as everything was new and not really polished yet. But now, what you see is probably what you're going to get for a very long time. There is no use in complaining about something that you can do nothing about. Apple isn't likely to change the design of iOS any time soon, and Apple doesn't read these forums anyways. If you're still dissatisfied with iOS 7 eight months after it came out, it's safe to say that you are never going to be happy with it. You obviously have the right to do as you please, but why continue to beat a dead horse? What's done is done, and it will continue to be done until the next time Apple chooses to redesign iOS. Android and Windows Phone aren't bad options, after all.

Exactly. Apple is willing to give up money (by making Mavericks free as opposed to past OS X releases) to increase the adoption rate of their latest OS. Why is it surprising that Apple isn't going to lay down a red carpet for people that are able to upgrade to iOS 7 and choose not to? Apple is a known quantity, and you either like the way they do things or you don't. If you don't like it, vote with your wallet.

Voting with your wallet isn't the only way to express not liking something. If someone doesn't like that well, they are free not to listen and not to participate.

You're right, it's not the only way to express not liking something. But it is by far the most effective way.

Or pretty much just as ineffective as any other way, since whether or not you leave Apple still won't change something because of that. So really no better or worse way of going about it realistically speaking.

So if there's no way of changing the things you dislike about the device you're using, why not find a device that works better for your needs?

Because this one might still be the lesser of the other evils so to say, although you can still have things that you don't like about it, especially when coming from precious version where you liked almost if not actually everything and suddenly by upgrading more things unnecessary became worse for you.

Most things don't nicely fit in into some sort of black or white type of view--just becuse you don't like some things about something new/changes and it even got worse for no real reason to you and you want to voice your opinion that doesn't mean that you suddenly would have something else work for you better just because of that.

It's true that iOS might still be the best option for someone that has a lot of problems with it, but I guess what I don't understand is why some people feel the need to expend so much negative energy talking about it. If you focus on what you don't like, what you don't like becomes your main focus. So rather than incessantly complain about something they can't change, why not discuss ways to work around those things until a better option comes around?

Just my two cents, of course.

Some people just do. Plenty if people out there and plenty sometimes just want to even vent while others want to share with others who might agree. Plenty of support groups out there for all kinds of things where nothing more than just talking back and forth happens. Nothing really wrong with any of that. Those who aren't interested just don't participate in those discussions and have their own discussions about things thy are interested.

"I hate IOS" leaves no room for discussion. Sure you can vent and bring Steve jobs, Scott forstall, Jony ive and the ghosts of apple past into the discussion and throw in the kitchen sink as well, but it leaves no room for discussion.

Much different than a thread title of: "I don't like iOS7, how to improve".

Sometimes a discussion of that sort isn't being sought. Other times even when it might be, plenty of of people jumping all over the thread saying "leave", "stop talking about this", etc. only serves to push those people into not caring about having a discussion when they just get ganged up on.
