i too also am a bit surprised at how many of you say that "Not retina display" is a deal breaker for you getting the ipad 2.

isn't the thing getting much faster/better graphics/cameras/thinner/lighter enough for you? or does the ipad 1 suffice in those categories that you don't even care if they upped those specs a bit? i'm truly curious, because i really haven't used an ipad extensively, really only in the stores, which is very limited.

also, what about the chinese new year going on right now? doesn't that mean the ipad isn't being produced until after that's done with because the chinese aren't working? or how does that work. lol i have no clue so i probably sound pretty naive. i wonder how long it'll take them to make the number they want to hit before they can start shipping...

I don't think so. But time will tell.

Personally I'm giving my first gen to my wife. Assuming the verizon version has decent no-contract 3G options, I'll happily upgrade to a verizon iPad 2. That, in itself, is probably worth picking up a new version.

I'm with you on this...I think people's expectations are way too high way too early. Just because the iPhone 4 has a retina display, does that mean that every device that Apple puts out from now on should be retina? The iPhone has a 3.5" screen and it can be done on that size...but for a 9.7" screen? The cost would be outrageous.

I wouldn't mind a sharper screen but it's far from a deal breaker. I'm really looking for a faster device, especially when it comes to web surfing. The iPad is decent but it's certainly much slower than sufring the web on my desktop.

Ok, great. But what I really want to know is what is Apple going to do with the improved "guts?" If they don't introduce more creation functionality, the ipad is still nothing more than an unnecessary toy to me. The ipad platform has so much potential that is not being utilized. For starters, Apple needs to bring iLife to ipad with a slick iOS interface, like they did with iWork. Having a touchscreen interface to iPhoto, with editing capabilities, is what I want to see.

Whoever thought that we would be getting "Retina" display like the iPhone 4 for the iPad 2 is really stupid.
But i'm suspecting iPad 3 will have a higher resolution display.

WSJ is pretty much right all of the time, so we can also expect an amazing new iPhone 5 with similar features (minus the thinner and lighter).
This year will be amazing for Apple..
iPad 2, iPhone 5, iOS 5, new refresh of Macs, Mac OS X 10.7, new iPods..perfect. Now they just need to make an iWatch.

well, i'm going to skip this generation and i will buy ipad with hi-res display and probably with better battery life in new generation of iPads.
the same with iphone 5. im patient enough just to wait :)

Current iPad resolution is awful for reading text-intensive documents, which is the main reason I had an iPad (I sold it due to the screen being horrible). Will wait for a better screen to buy.

Nonsense, I read on mine everyday and the resolution is just fine. Sure, I'de love to have a "retina" display, but it's certainly just fine as it is for heavy reading every day.

It's good but not mind-blowingly good like the iPhone 4. When you're talking about a device that is 99% display, resolution is important. I think that an increased resolution (not necessarily Retina) would be beneficial for reading on the iPad, which you do a lot on compared to the iPhone. Photos also look ridiculously good on the iPhone 4, and photos is one of the major uses of the iPad!

But, I understand if there are technical limitations...Perhaps Apple does not want to jar developers with too many changes for a platform that is only 1 year old.

I think that is a much more realistic view. The screen is fine, but certainly not amazing like the iPhone4, but then what screen is?

iPad 2 is really just iPad 1 Final.

Camera should've been in the first iPad. It's why I was shocked and didn't buy the first iPad.

I'll be getting iPad 2, and most likely iPad 3, if they bump it to Retina. That's the last thing on my list and I will be happy happy.

No better resolution. No thanks. I'll save my money for iPad 3. Looking at my iPhone 4 screen and then the current iPad, there's a huge difference in clarity.

You can't honestly think that they'd expect devs to revamp their apps yet again (already) to support a larger resolution when there are still apps being updated to support iPhone's Retina display.

i'll believe what the WSJ says with this, which seems like a sort of controlled leak from someone at apple.

if true, this is probably their passive aggressive way at dealing with the soon-to-be-released honeycomb/xoom tablet to keep up some apple hype until they come out and make an announcement about the ipad 2, most likely at some point in march, with an april release.

as much as i'd love to see a february announcement (the sooner the better), i don't think it'll happen or we'll learn really anything new about it from here on out until the announcement. the next month or so is probably gonna feel pretttty long..

I held off buying the iPad because of the speed and memory issues. A buddy of mine from work complained that it was a bit slow and there was some lag when surfing and switching to different pages. Looks like that will be addressed.

Now that the camera is there, this is perfect so I can Facetime with the family while I work nights. They won't be limited to the small iPhone4 screen now.

A higher resolution screen is a non-issue for me. I won't watch movies on it and it's mainly a tool for surfing for my wife and educational games for the kids. Right now, they use the iPhone 4 for that and while it works, I'm sure my wife will appreciate surfing on a larger screen and the kids will love the educational games and books on the iPad.

iPad 2 for the wife and kids. New MBP for me. I can't wait for the refresh. I'm pretty happy with the iPhone4. I'll wait until iPhone 6.

I wish Apple would come out with an iTV. A LED, 42"-60" flatscreen TV with built in AppleTV3 that has some built in storage or the ability to use wired or wireless networked storage, can be controlled by an iOS device to surf the web, play games and of course AirPlay streaming.

Yes, I do. Which is why I have no problem waiting. But until then, I'll pass.

Since you list your iPod touch in your sig and no iPad I wonder if you have them both available to choose from. You say you prefer the iP4 for those tasks but if you don't have an iPad available to compare to then it's not really valid. If my iPad is around I will probably use that over my iP4.

It's going to have to be a lot thinner and lighter for me to replace our 2 iPads as well as associated iPad cases. As for the camera, We've only used Facetime a few times on our iPhone 4s, then the novelty wore off.

Every time I pick up my iPad, it still feels brand new to me. Having a faster processor would be nice, but none of the rumored new features tempts me to upgrade.

We'll see if there are any surprises come announcement day, though.

wooow, what a news.
Is there anyone on earth who think, they are producing a new ipad that is thicker, much heavier, with a slower processor and with less powerful graphics proecessor?

I think Microsoft is working on the product you just described. It will be available sometime in 2012 after one more presentation at CES.

If they put it in the first, you'd not be so excited about the second. This is exactly what I would have expected the second generation iPad to be, a speed bump and sticking a camera in somewhere.

Apple will either call it a "crotch cam" or a "bogger cam" depending on whether you're holding it right.

I use a Kindle for reading, I dont need facetime, I’m delighted with my iPad, its never crashed, I have all my music and films on it, the display is stunning, it is normally the talking point for someone that has not seen one close up. I wont be upgrading because this one is great.

If you haven‘t owned one, wait for the new one, that makes sense. If you are not buying the new one because it hasn’t got this or that function you will be waiting forever because next years one will not have next years fashion function.

Mother of god, it still needs to be explained to people that Retina is not happening on the iPad2 due to the insane resolution requirement?

The community here has really hit new levels of tard.
