In the long run, would Apple want the iPad to have annual updates like the iPhone, or would they be better off having slightly more silent bumps, as in the iMac cycle, where they could upgrade more gradually?

Do they view this as an annual "shock" product, or, a computer that will eventually get incremental updates?

Just a basic question.
There will be annual "shock" updates until the tablet market has settled and matured, which won't be any time soon.

They do gradual updates on iMacs and MacBooks because the technology is mature and generally there's nothing to show/say about it. But when they have something new to show, they do in fact do the same song and dance as they do every year with the iPhone and (presumably in the coming weeks) the iPad.

It is a testament to their designs that Apple can afford to only update its product line once per year. Every other week Motorola and Samsung, etc., are rolling out their latest Android phone (and now tablet) in a desperate grab for attention.

I hope this time it will be easy to sell my iPad as it was my iPhones. I was able to ge almost or what I paid for them and I don't think it will be similar with the iPads. I really want to at least sell one of my iPads because i just won one (ironic so close to a new release). Even tho I won it I wouldn't feel right not getting most of what it is worth.

Very true, as soon as I get my iPhone on verizon, I will be selling my iPad 1 then buying ipad2 at launch

I have the iPhone 4.. on AT&T of course.. But I don't have an iPad
I'm getting the 2nd gen though! One thing I've learned about Apple is that the 1st Gen is expensive.. and the 2nd will be cheaper (hopefully)

I still think iPad 2 will have a x4 display, as in december of 2010, ibooks 1.2 launched, with the wood tile image. Wood Tile@2x.Png is 1536x800 pixels. Its hard to believe Apple was this far along in testing ipad 3 that it got into ibooks app, 18 months before its launch

It's not that testing started, it's that the artwork was done then. It makes more sense that Apple will just do @2x bitmap graphics for any iOS app from now on, just so it's ready when needed.

Frustrating that they have a screen and can't tell the resolution. Techno-tease.

How is there a backlight behind there?

It's like how they cram that movie projector and phonograph in there. That's some crazy black magic. About time we put those witches to the test and see if they swim.

So many events going on this week and the next.
I don't think anything from Apple will come up until the third week of this month, what do you think?

Google has an event tomorrow, and my bet is that Apple will announce their event this week to take some of the wind out of their sails.

Did a 3rd grader make those labels? I call BS on a higher resolution screen. No way do they offer that at the $500 price point.

First off, the iPad 2 is already in limited production, so the fact parts are starting to leak shouldn't be a shock to anyone.

2nd, with the competition still more or less non-existant did you really think Apple had to blow away everyone with a overpriced absurdly high res screen when for 99% of the general people out there (not nerds, but mom's and dads) think the iPad screen is great. Next year the pressure will be on, and Apple will bust out the big guns.

Let's all hope for a killer A4 upgrade, (whatever they decide to call it.) More ram, more storage options and less weight. And I guess cameras.... sure, why not?

The real place Apple could just crush the competition is battery life. Add 5 more hours to the iPad and Samsung/RIM will just cry.

I think Apple will want to hold their event possibly on the 15th, because:

1. It's a Tuesday.
2. I would imagine that the event needs to come fairly soon to line up with the rumors.
3. By then, they'll have some solid numbers to report on regarding initial Verizon iPhone sales.
