Google has an event tomorrow, and my bet is that Apple will announce their event this week to take some of the wind out of their sails.

Well that's another way of putting it. :)

The sooner the better but I don't think we will see a conference until the third week...

:apple:

I note the panel is made by LG, which is not good news in my books as the current iPad has panels from both LG / Samsung and the Samsung panels are a lot better and don't have the inaccurate white balance or yellowing (colour temperature) issues.

I also notice the old panel has a mounting plate with screws, whereas the new panel has no screw plate. This seems to suggest the panel will be the main supportive structure and will sit flatter inside the casing, therefore other components will be screwed in place to keep everything tight.

As for the note on the flash photo, maybe the oleophobic screen coating will not be used any longer and affects the reflection of light in the photo. Also if its thinner either they have drastically shrunk the backlight or have chosen another panel technology like AMOLED for example. Usually the lack of light reflecting indicates no shiny covering.

Doesn't look any less shiny to me. And even if it's supposed to be less reflective, how about some of that love to the MacBook Pros and the iMacs?

I think Apple will want to hold their event possibly on the 15th, because:

1. It's a Tuesday.
2. I would imagine that the event needs to come fairly soon to line up with the rumors.
3. By then, they'll have some solid numbers to report on regarding initial Verizon iPhone sales.

Think they'll mention macs? Or just ipods and ipads and all

I Don't Buy This

So you get your hands on the most, potentially, important individual component of the iPad2 and you take a photo with a crappy camera, poor lighting, and hand drawn labels?

I think I could take a picture of two pieces of black glass side-by-side and make it look more believable than this "leak". More like butt leakage.

After looking at the additional photos on 9to5 Mac, I still don't buy it.

You do realise those images are used in Accessibility for zooming in.
Except you're completely wrong as they were removed as soon as they were discovered, unless Apple likes to tease people with vision problems by removing images. Also, the wood tile image is too large to fit either way on the iPad (1536 is bigger than either way on the iPad).

i believe this leak. seems pretty legit to me, and reasonably so.

i was thinking today, the rumors about the ipad 2 don't mean squat. i have a feeling apple will announce this thing in march, and it will blow people's minds. i can't see them just putting cameras on it and making it thinner and ta-da, there's your new ipad — there's gotta be more. i don't think they'll be so willing to give up so much of the market share they've dominated in the past year.

the more i read about the motorola xoom, the more i think it will seriously compete with the ipad, and apple must know this would happen by this time, so they had to step up the game. here's to hoping tomorrow we find out what the resolution of that new leaked screen is.

On the same lines of thinking

I still think iPad 2 will have a x4 display, as in december of 2010, ibooks 1.2 launched, with the wood tile image. Wood Tile@2x.Png is 1536x800 pixels. Its hard to believe Apple was this far along in testing ipad 3 that it got into ibooks app, 18 months before its launch

I was thinking the same thing. I can't imagine that apple has png's in an upcoming software update for a device that is two iterations away. I have no background in the world of software development so maybe someone can weigh in here, but wouldn't Apple be using a completely different version/copy of software for a product so far off?

Maybe I'm weird but to me a lighter screen with better image quality in sunlight that is thinner and uses less power would be more useful to me than a retina display. My main problem with shoving more pixels into the same sized display is it means the smallest text sizes will be even smaller and harder for me to read without glasses (I have that problem with the iPhone retina display). I don't really have a problem with a higher res screen but it wouldn't be my top choice in terms of iPad 2 features.

Actually, with the retina display, the font isn't smaller. The IOS renders typography to be cleaner and sharper without affecting the size, which is the opposite of what you described.

In other words, You'll have a better reading experience and your eyes wont get exhausted compared to trying to read text on a computer screen.

Personally, I think that the retina display makes way more sense on the iPad than on the iPhone/Touch.

I don't understand why they can't make a call on whether the resolution appears to be the same or greater- isn't it just a matter of looking at the LCD matrix with fairly low magnification and comparing the number of crystals within, say, a millimeter?

PLEASE APPLE????

Too late. The time for begging ended long ago. Apple has already decided on all iPad-2 features and started manufacturing/stockpiling millions of units. They won't change the features now.

I would like anti-reflective higher-resolution screen, lower weight device, longer batter life, more memory, more flash capacity, faster CPU/GPU, front and back cameras (preferably with flash, autofocus and high-resolution like iPhone 4), micro-USB, GPS... I couldn't care less about how thin or cheap it is.

I won't get all that I would like, but I will buy one.

I'm fairly sure there will be more to the next iPad iteration than better screen and a couple of cameras.
I think a good portion of the upgrade will be software that enables the hardware to function as more than whatever we're thinking of.
Look at the iOS 4 with the iPhone 4.
One example was bracketing with the camera snapping pictures.
For those not photo-savvy...bracketing is taking three exposures of the same image...one underexposed, one normally exposed, and one overexposed.
The iPhone 4 camera brackets, and on top of that, it intelligently combines the three exposures to keep highlights snappy without blowing out and shadows deep and rich without losing definition.
I'd never have thought to put it in a cell phone camera, and never heard of it being implemented in a cell phone camera as well as Apple has done.
So as much of the leaks and info we're getting, there's gonna be some interesting twists that we haven't thought about.
Apple will present and demo the new iPad, and we'll have a "That was so damn cool" moment after keeping a mental checklist of features we correctly guessed would be there.
Like I said-always cool little moments where they implement something handy and unexpected into the product.
Things that make our use of the products better, but things that often go severely underappreciated.

I zoomed in 1000x on my macbook into the jpeg in the article to inspect the pixel count and it looks like 1024x768 resolution on the iPad2!

 That gives me the resolution of my iBook in 8.33% less space!

The frame is darker. It appears to possibly be Liquidmetal Technology. It if is, that would explain why it is thinner and lighter. It also matches the color of the new links on Apple.com.

[...]

If it's Liquidmetal, I'd recommend getting some LQMT stock soon..

Agreed. That makes total sense regarding why Apple darkened the color of their silver on Apple.com. I also agree with buying up stock in LiquidMetal Technologies. :)
