Ive been offered the current iPad for christmas by various members of my family and have told them all to hold back until after the new year. if its end of feb :apple: release v2 then thats great! if its April, then thats great too! its still the first quarter of the year as the rumours have stated and would fall in line to when the first was released. Either way, im holding back for iPad 2.

Worth the wait

So glad I've held out for v2. It's gonna be worth the wait.

11.6" 128GB 4G Ram MBA for Xmas and a iPad 2 in Feb, march.

You the man, Arn!

Sad that Apple isn't attending MWSF anymore. That was a "mecca" for me (from as young as 14), my Dad, and my older brother. We did it for years. After attending the last one 2 years ago, we were pretty sad.

classic self certification of being pretty sad (sorry, i'm only jealous ;o)

"upstream component partners have all been notified of the shipments schedule"

I wonder if Samsung also knows about this?

end of february means this is the day the first units will be produced. they will not start selling them until they have produced shiploads of ipads and shipped them to US. don't expect these things to hit the stores before april.

i would not wait if i needed one now since the upgrade seems to be marginal. if you are waiting for a big step skip one generation like people do with the iphone.

Agreed, unless you really want a camera there isn't much reason to wait.

Actually a mini-USB socket is a absolute given as the European Union mandated it as the standard recharging method on all cell phones. Of course just because the connector is there doesn't indicate USB functionality.

Actually, the EU have not mandated it, it's more of a 'recommendation', and as yet only applies to mobile phones, although there is a desire to broaden it's scope to laptops/ digital cameras and the like in the future. There is no enforceability or penalty, so it is pretty much up to Apple if they want to include USB on the iPad.

BTW, I got my iPad for my birthday last month, and am not so sure if there will be a new one so soon - version one is still flying off the shelves, and has only just been launched in many countries.

Even though The EU might have mandated it, does not mean that a US company needs to comply here.
It's an ipad, not a mobile/cell phone.

Worst case is that the charge stays the same, and the cable becomes a two-parter, a usb-miniusb cable and a miniusb to universal adapter.

A lot of phones are still being sold here in the UK with bespoke charging/usb connections. This EU mandate is not going to change any time soon, and beside, I think it will only depend on manufacturing or companies based in Europe (Nokia etc).

The whole reason for this mandate is that you should be able to buy lets say a charger for your Nokia phone, and then by magic the same charger works for other devices as well, which is obviously quite useful. But while I would expect a Nokia phone charger to deliver enough power to charge an iPhone, there is no way it would deliver enough power to charge an iPad; it would have to be massively over engineered and more expensive to do that.

Even though The EU might have mandated it, does not mean that a US company needs to comply here.

While a US company can build whatever they like without any care for EU regulations, they need to comply with any products they want to sell in the EU. (Independent of the fact that the iPad is not a phone, so the iPad doesn't have to conform to regulations for phones).

Umm, hate to spoil things but reading the linked article very clearly points out this is not expected to launch in February 2011 but in April. Shipments starting in February would be to allow Apple to build up stock for launch which would make a lot of sense.

The sources expect shipments to drop significantly after the end of the January as the company begins to digest the inventory across the rest of the first quarter and then launch iPad 2 in April.

I still think we're likely to see an iPad 2 event in March for a launch in April. This information would tie in with that and it makes a lot of sense in terms of its position within Apple's iOS range. You'd have March for the iPad, June for the iPhone and September for the iPod Touch, nice distribution and ties in well with iOS developer update in April giving an extra bit of publicity to the new iPad model just after it launches. I'd also be really surprised if the original iPad had a lifespan of 10 months considering there's very little competition around at the moment.

Rumor designed to hurt Christmas sales

I call this one as fake - designed by Apple's competitors to damage christmas sales. If Apple reduce their product cycle to less than twelve months it will be a first for the company and massively anger purchasers of the device.

They might start shipping in February so Apple can get ahead of demand. Rev 2 might even be announced in February, but it won't go on general sale until twelve months after the original.

If Foxconn have started this rumour, I hope Apple seriously penalise them. This is seriously damaging to Christmas sales and Apple simply wouldn't do this, it's out of usual pattern for them and makes no sense for any company to say "hang on, don't buy for christmas, we'll have a new model first thing in the new year..."

I too hope this is true...I've been holding off buying the first gen because we are so close to the 2nd gen!!! Please be true!!!!!!

BTW, these iPad commercials on the TV aren't helping :D

In the exact same boat. I had to go into the Apple store this weekend and made it a point not to play with one. However someone just left an 11" Air as I walked in, so I had to. It is pretty cool. It was a made house in there to. I just needed a damn mini display port adapter.

wisdom?

I question the wisdom of doing this so soon after Christmas. A ton of new users are going to suddenly feel what they got is less "cool" in 60 days. Bad move if this is true.

USB connector is not happening.

Its also too close to Christmas. End of March at the earliest

The first might be a side effect of EU regulations on mobile device charging. Or if it's USB host, then it might allow people to stick their presentations onto the iPad without syncing, via a USB memory stick.

The second - China shuts down for Christmas? I highly doubt that.

Apple can clear out iPad 1 inventory at Christmas and in the New Year sales, and be ready to introduce the iPad 2 once there aren't many iPad 1s left to sell.

Sounds about what I would expect. They will straddle the April 1st tax/report line depending on how they wish to play investors and based on where the product is in terms of development and manufacturing.

A March release wouldn't be impossible.

As for the features: all of those might be true. The USB, even a mini-USB, seems a little far fetched. However, it would be very practical for extended memory.

I'm more enthused about processing capabilities and getting the iPad autonomous from a base Mac (if desired). When the iPad has a little more capability, it's very keen as a home computer in itself.

Like I said, January, February, March ain't gonna happen!!!!

Apple release their products in accordance with American weather conditions. None of their product releases ever fall on winter. Ever.

Simple.

Ridiculous. It Steve's ability to read animal entrails that predicted release dates.

...there have been fall and winter releases.
