Might be full size USB. Why not it would fit in well cosmetically.

IMO USB and USB mini look very ugly. The usb Mini looks very breakable as well. I think they will throw in an adapter for their current connectivity.

Just use your logic a little bit: when is the person likelier to stand in line: in cold cold winter or hot hot summer?

Exactly.

Why would Apple want only 74 people queuing up outside their stores in winter versus 674 in summer?

I think people would line up regardless of the temperature for a new Apple product. The cold doesn't stop people on Black Friday.

I personally don't understand why Apple would come out with a new iPad right after the holiday season.. Anyone who hears the rumor will probably not buy friends or family the iPad 1st gen for christmas in fear of missing out on the latest. But I'm sure Apple has a good reason for it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

I was going to list mine on eBay, until I read these posts. Feb would be just in time for Uni, but I wouldn't be able to not have my iPad at Uni until April. Plus us Aussies are always behind a month or two :(

Unless they are forced to by the Eurozone nanny state.Of course Apple could limit it's functionality to the minimum the law requires though.Pretty funny that with all the problems they have it's super important that all cell phones have the same connector.Laughable really.

Of course, because you are German, aren´t you?
No? well, then, let me tell you sir, your country is going down the drain too.
See you in the gutter :p

An April Delivery Date Is Still Most Likely

I believe the Digitimes article is referring to the date when Foxconn is likely to ship manufactured units to Apple. It is not the date when Apple is likely to deliver new iPads to consumers. That is still most likely to be Friday, April 1, for several reasons:

1. Apple will enjoy the chance to joke at its competitors' expense.

2. More importantly, Apple's fiscal quarter will end on March 25, and delivering after that date will allow Apple to delay sales-related financial reporting until July 25.

3. A Friday delivery date will tend to pump up retail store traffic, and Apple will want to leverage the photo ops this will lead to.

4. This delivery schedule will maintain Apple's tendency toward one-year product cycles.

What will the new iPad 2 be like? Basically, it will be sufficiently thinner, lighter, faster, better looking (including the display), and with enough new software and hardware features to stay ahead of the pack for another year. If the EU mandates USB ports on such devices, then Apple will probably comply and present this as a great new feature it dreamed up all on its own.

P.S.: Steve J loves his little product announcements and is most likely to do this in late January, just like last year.

I do wonder if the 1st generation iPads will hold their resale value as well as, say, iPhones seem to, after the new iPads are released. I can't afford to shell out another $700 for an iPad 2 quite this soon, but getting a good resale value could help to ease the blow a bit.

Well

I say Announcement on Jan. 19th or 26th and release a month later in booming markets, like iphone 4. That would make end of February pretty possible.

Because last time Apple said in 60 Days but they weren't able to meet that goal. This time they are going to be like "30 Days" and they are going to pull it off with all those production places.

Wont be buying one my self .. its always tid bit upgrades , typical apple making you wait for the real decent stuff .. my current ipad is just excellent for what i use

Actually a mini-USB socket is a absolute given as the European Union mandated it as the standard recharging method on all cell phones. Of course just because the connector is there doesn't indicate USB functionality.

This isn't a cell phone. I don't see a USB charger for the iPad. It would undercut the entire charger infrastructure Apple has in place. I certainly imagine a USB port for other uses however.

But Apple know full well all that's being said here.

If you have a typical 12 month renew cycle, and launch your 1st product in April, then obviously come next Christmas people are going to be saying, Don't buy now, the new one is only 3 or 4 months away, wait.

They know this is going to happen.

I guess there is some clever maths going on at Apple at to sales number and how this affects things.

Corporate purchases and sales in non-Christian countries have little relationship to holiday buying decisions in the U.S. Apple doesn't need clever math to realize that, as a worldwide business with increasing corporate connections, Christmas is just one more event in the calendar that will influence sales. It is not the linchpin of the entire sales year.

I personally don't understand why Apple would come out with a new iPad right after the holiday season.. Anyone who hears the rumor will probably not buy friends or family the iPad 1st gen for christmas in fear of missing out on the latest. But I'm sure Apple has a good reason for it.

Because who will actually still keep buying it? You would think that by 2 full months after Christmas, people who wanted to buy the iPad1 would've already.

To all who really want an iPad but are waiting for G2 - just cave in and get one now. Otherwise when you finally get it you will be kicking yourself that you missed out all the fun for 3/4/5 months! That is how I felt after buying one in July instead of on launch day!

I think iPad 2 will bring incremental upgrades across the board rather than any radical new feature or massive improvement. Having said that, I will be first in the queue when they are released. Most looking forward to:

gyro control (as seen in iPhone 4, will be great for FPS)
hopefully a significant speed boost which will be awesome for running DOSPAD. If it can emulate 486 DX/33 at 100% then I will be very, very happy!

Christmas Is Not Really Relevant

Because who will actually still keep buying it? You would think that by 2 full months after Christmas, people who wanted to buy the iPad1 would've already.

Anyone who is posting to this discussion at this moment is probably not a current corporate decision-maker. Please remember that understanding Apple's product management requires thinking like a CEO or CFO and not like a holiday shopper. It also requires having a comprehensive overview of the sales composition for multiple countries, multiple cultures, and multiple types of customers (some of whom are individuals, others of whom are very large organizations).

Christmas is a factor in this kind of marketing, but so are many other things. Holiday shopping trends may be important for toys, but they are not that major a factor for iPads.

I call this one as fake - designed by Apple's competitors to damage christmas sales. If Apple reduce their product cycle to less than twelve months it will be a first for the company and massively anger purchasers of the device.

They might start shipping in February so Apple can get ahead of demand. Rev 2 might even be announced in February, but it won't go on general sale until twelve months after the original.

If Foxconn have started this rumour, I hope Apple seriously penalise them. This is seriously damaging to Christmas sales and Apple simply wouldn't do this, it's out of usual pattern for them and makes no sense for any company to say "hang on, don't buy for christmas, we'll have a new model first thing in the new year..."

Interesting point and may have some validity to it. Competition is really heating up in this area and a competitor would have a lot to gain if they could convince people to not buy an iPad this Christmas. However I really think the iPad is going to be the #1 stocking stuffer this holiday season despite rumors of a 2nd generation iPad being released in Feb-Mar-Apr. The average person is not as informed as everyone here regarding potential hardware release rumors and will buy regardless.

USB connector is not happening.

Its also too close to Christmas. End of March at the earliest

I agree with you. I think they will show it off in February and ship in March.

I think the iPad 2 will have a front facing camera for sure. Not so sure about a rear camera tho.

A high res. display (Around 1600 x 1200) more ram (512 MB Minimum if not 1024 MB) and a dual core CPU with improved graphics performance.

But I would not expect the design to change at all.

I hope it is true.

Then we can read all the threads asking if they should buy now or wait for the iPad 3.

Oh man!!! This is going to be good.

Actually a mini-USB socket is a absolute given as the European Union mandated it as the standard recharging method on all cell phones. Of course just because the connector is there doesn't indicate USB functionality.

For starters, there is no EU mandate for USB!

Second, the EU wants USB charging on mobile phones, which the iPad is not.

Didn't this conversation already happen.

Just use your logic a little bit: when is the person likelier to stand in line: in cold cold winter or hot hot summer?

Exactly.

Never, most have credit cards and the Internet

I just hope that it uses dual core Cortex A9 or something way faster than the hummingbird A8 in the current model. The iPad is currently "fast for a tablet", which is to say that there is still a lot of room to increase speed.

And USB, or probably micro-USB, sounds like a reasonable possibility to me. The new European regulations requiring micro-USB charging on cell phones kicks in in January and I don't know if the iPad class of devices is affected by the laws, but the iPhone certainly is, so this could be the beginning of Apple's first generation of mobile devices to support micro-USB charging. The question is will they still have apple dock connector ports.

Like you say.....mandated on all cell phones. And the iPad is NOT a cell phone. Even if it has 3G it still does not make phone calls.

This is APPLE we're talking about - consistency over functionality, so its perfectly reasonable to almost guarantee a USB socket will be on the iPad2

Just a thought - whilst Foxconn may be shipping them in Feb, that doesn't mean they are shipping to consumers. Maybe Apple's wanting to sit on a stockpile to prevent the problems they had earlier this year with the shortages and poor shipping times.
