Who here hopes that the thinner form factor rumor also implies that the new iPad will be lighter as well?

Frankly I really want a 7" size. I've managed to obtain a 7" Galaxy Tab, and the size is ideal. Especially for me since I travel with my iPhone 4, and my new 13" MBA. therefore it's so much easier to tuck a 7" tablet into my bag compared to the relative large iPad. In fact I just sold mine ahead of the version 2 release since I found it limited to in home use.

Needless to say when Jobs came out with his anti 7" rant, I knew the party was over. Part of his motivation was fear of being compared to the upcoming group of about to be released 7"'models from the competition. By refusing to build this already popular size, it gives him just one more "out" when comparing iPads to the rest.

The great lengths & effort Jobs extends to badmouth the competition never ceases to amaze me.

My Prediction...

Prediction 1... Around the CES show... Apple announces and ships the CMDA iPhone 4.

Prediction 2. February, they announces iOS 4.X and iPad 2.0 and ship within a couple weeks.

I think they will use the CMDA iPhone to take the wind out of some of the CES announcements and iPad 2.0 as a follow-on to take the wind of of the sails of any tablet competitors after the show. I would also think a significant iOS announcement would be coming too to really dig at the Android and Windoze 7 Mobile market. Apple loves to not participate in CES and yet steal the show. They've done it several times in the past and I think this year they may do it again.

Also, they won't wait long from announcing the new iPad and availability... they know the sales of iPad 1.0 will tank once the new iPad is announced.

This is great news for those that didnt jump on the first generation. My IP4 is what sealed the deal on waiting for iPad 2...the screen is just too damn beautiful. IDK if "retina" ppi will be a feature(youve got to double the H&V res to peek over 220ppi)...but apple does take their displays seriously. And please Apple, just give it ONE USB to charge and update...your proprietary pin connector is bottle-necked by USB anyway (other end of cord!). No more dust-bunnies hiding inside of our ports...

I played with a Galaxy Tab and didn't like the size... seemed like an odd size for a tablet. Great for an e-reader though. It just did not seem big enough to be really useful for more than e-books and showing photos. The larger sceen makes email, typing and web surfing much more natural. I have to agree with SJ. But that is my opinion too. :D

The vast majority of these are not iPad/iPod lines, there are entirely different drivers for their release at this time.

One thing to factor in is that Corporate purchases ramp up Mid March to Mid May. Personally, Given the fact that current iPads are being sold in bulk to several corporations, If you want to get the corporate sales you want general availability by 4/1, and announcement 6 weeks prior.

I think we might be surprised just how much they are able to shed (weight, thickness) off of the first gen. I think it feels like a chubby tank in my hands. I love it to death but sheesh.

I know it's a tiny thing but for example that gap between the touchscreen surface and that actual display inside the body of the iPad bothers me. Look at the newest iPod or iPhone it's virtually flush. Unnecessary thickness! ha!

There is no point that Apple release it so quickly, iPad 1 is selling like hot cakes, there is no competition, Apple owns 95% of the tablet market, last week the ipad 1 were recently available in many countries, it would be a slap in the face for them when they see that the ipad 2 is coming just 2 months later, Apple won't do that, April is far more realistic.

To all who really want an iPad but are waiting for G2 - just cave in and get one now. Otherwise when you finally get it you will be kicking yourself that you missed out all the fun for 3/4/5 months! That is how I felt after buying one in July instead of on launch day!

I think iPad 2 will bring incremental upgrades across the board rather than any radical new feature or massive improvement. Having said that, I will be first in the queue when they are released. Most looking forward to:

gyro control (as seen in iPhone 4, will be great for FPS)
hopefully a significant speed boost which will be awesome for running DOSPAD. If it can emulate 486 DX/33 at 100% then I will be very, very happy!

no thanks, i'm waiting for 2. not into buying obsolete tech

They can't come out with a new one too soon after the holidays or people will be

Don't kid yourself, Apple only wants the money. They could care less about the customers thoughts or opinions. They've successfully developed a way to maximize their income stream. The customers are only as important as their willingness to pay Apple. That's why Jobs has conned the masses into actually believing he has their best interests in mind and dictates what is offered in iTunes. The digital library of tightly controlled, limited content. No worries you're in good hands with Apple. Best of all you don't even have to think for yourself. In fact it's highly frowned upon.

Me too. After getting some playtime with the Galaxy tab, the 7" inch is almost perfect in size. It's not too big, not too small and you're still able to get a nice looking display size in order to do whatever you need to do. I really like the iPad's size however I think it's a smidge too big. Were it even an inch or two smaller then it would be the perfect travel companion for me so that I wouldn't need to carry my 15" with me.

One can only hope ol' Stevey caves in and drops the size on the newer iPads :(

Hopefully this is true! And for there being a mini USB port, why not? Everyone keeps mentioning charging over it, its going to be for data... most importantly, MIDI. The iPad is quickly becoming a music powerhouse! I can only imagine where the iPad will lead music production/interaction in the next couple years. The dock connector will still be there. If I'm connected to it via midi how am I going to be able to be plugged into a power source at the same time, hence the mini usb!

I wonder how long it would take to get to Canada once they announce it.

I am totally jumping on this as soon as they update. Facetime, higher res screen (a must for me after using my IP4), more ram, anything else is a bonus. It's going to be a multiple book replacement for me.

Can't wait! Now I just have to convince my wife!

I agree with every point you've made.

I just dumped my original iPads on eBay in anticipation of this. In the decade I've enjoyed Apple computers & other products, I've followed their announcements & releases closely. Especially since in nearly all cases I upgrade each time. Experience has taught me 2nd gen Apple products are far superior to gen 1.

Finally Apple has massive momentum & public acceptance right now. They can do anything they want (right or wrong) with no push back. Jobs is one of the most brilliant sales people of all times. His influence is endless.

True steve jobs is Jewish and he does not celebrate Christmas.

The real reason for early release of ipad2 is to keep up with the completion, apple does not want to give up the lead they have in iPad like devices.

Do you know this as fact about SJ?

Also, please don't show your ignorance. Not all Jewish people avoid celebrating xmas. This I know first hand.

I just hope that it uses dual core Cortex A9 or something way faster than the hummingbird A8 in the current model. The iPad is currently "fast for a tablet", which is to say that there is still a lot of room to increase speed.

And USB, or probably micro-USB, sounds like a reasonable possibility to me. The new European regulations requiring micro-USB charging on cell phones kicks in in January and I don't know if the iPad class of devices is affected by the laws, but the iPhone certainly is, so this could be the beginning of Apple's first generation of mobile devices to support micro-USB charging. The question is will they still have apple dock connector ports.

Are you sure that law starts in 2011?

Cause as I recall it came in power in 2010 and Apple still released iPhone 4 without a microUSB port, as I recall people were expecting the port in iPhone 4.

Anyways, I'm all for the mandatory microUSB inclusion law, will save lots of adapters.

Hopefully iPhone 5 includes it and it won't be just for charging but for data aswell.

So glad I've held out for v2. It's gonna be worth the wait.

I too am glad I've waited. However, I am still skeptic on how much the specs will be improved. Time will tell!

Hopefully iPhone 5 includes it and it won't be just for charging but for data aswell.
We can only hope. I'm sure as hell not going to plug in two cables when I jump in my bimmer or when I plug the phone into any speaker-containing accessory.

Same here it's a poor device. The Galaxy Tab is stupid and anyone who wants one is stupid as well. ;)

And I agree with your take on it too... But I will add, yes, Mr. Jobs is a briliant salesman, but moreso, he's a true visionary. Like it or not, he seems to have the golden vision of what most consumers want and also understands that it's not "how much" you jam in a product that makes it great, it's how it's implemented that makes people go "wow". Apple may never have the biggest feature list on their products, but what they do is usually done very well and better than others by far.

I think they will announce it around the same time as the first one, which was the end of January.

Could they start shipping right away, maybe, but more than likely not, as they like to build the publics anticipation for the product.

I don't really care, whenever it is, it is and I'll order one.

Well, apparently someone's already got their hands on one here. It smells a bit like a marketing scam but there's a big Apple operation here (Ireland) so who knows.
