"When I bought my Apple TV 2 sometime during the first few weeks after launch I experienced "demand" first hand. I called the Apple store before leaving my house to check they had any stock. They had "loads. Yes of course there will be some left when you get here." Great I thought, I was there within 30 minutes but when I got there a guy was questioning an employee about non-availability. I interrupted them to see if they were talking about the Apple TV. They were. As I had, he had called ahead to check stock levels and had been given the same story. Loads of stock left, don't worry they'll be one for you when you get here. We both questioned this - it seemed a bit strange that they had sold all that stock in the less than half an hour since our respective phone calls. Sorry chaps, the demand has been amazing. Why don't we put you on the reserve list and we'll call you when one arrives. No thanks, I said, I'll just order online. At that point I went to do the rest of my shopping and as I was just about thinking about leaving I thought I'll just pop into Apple just to check......would you believe it but there were two Apple TV units on the shelf. Strange that I thought given that they had only sold all of their stock an hour before. Ok, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe a couple of customers had been walking around the store with them while I had been in there previously and then had second thoughts and returned them to the shelves. That must be it. I got to the paypoint to had over my cash and the server said "well done, that's the second to last one left on the shelves." As I was leaving, with a little bit of doubt, I thought I'd inspect the Apple TV shelves. There were five of them....so in the space of me paying and walking back to the shelves we had gone from one being left on the shelf to five. So during that moment four people had changed their minds and returned the products to the shelves? A cynic would say that Apple were deliberately manufacturing demand......I suspect we have a similar situation here with the iPad 2 but on a bigger scale."
