[/url]iMore reports that Apple is planning to hold their iPad 3 announcement on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Aside from the date of the announcement, iMore also claims that the iPad 3 will feature a 2048x1536 Retina display as well as a quad-core A6 processor and "possibly" 4G LTE networking. They cite sources "who have been reliable in the past".

Overall, the site seems least certain about LTE's presence in the iPad 3:iMore (then called Tipb) had previously pinpointed the pre-order date for the iPhone 4S.

LTE has been rumored to be included in the iPad 3 in the past. As iMore notes, LTE's rollout has been slow, but many carriers are aggressively rolling out coverage and LTE requirements in 2012. Apple has also been testing LTE in iOS 5 and hiring LTE engineers.

Update: Jim Dalrymple of LoopInsight confirms the date with a simple "Yep". Dalrymple is known to have sources inside Apple.

I said I wouldn't upgrade from my iPad 2 but now I'm getting antsy!!! I think I'm going to have to hide my credit cards.

So when I buy whatever the cell data version of the iPad3 is (LTE hoping), can I just pop my iPad2 3G's sim into it or do I have to do a bunch of contract stuff for it? I honestly forget what I had to do to add the iPad 2 to my plan.

I'm ready for the iPad 3 since I already sold my iPad 16GB Wi-Fi
Will get the white iPad 3 this time instead of black since I never owed a white product yet from Apple it will be my first time picking white :)

Let me give you some advice on the white one...some don't think about this.

If you are watching videos on it that are letterboxed...you will really feel like you are watching things inside a white picture frame. So you see movie picture, black letter-box framing, white framing (from bezel).

With the black iPad, the black letter-boxing blends perfectly into the black bezel/frame/border...so all you see is the movie picture then black.

Also colors look richer with all black framing.

128GB is possible...they would have to have gotten a good deal on flash storage though....but with iCloud and home networks...128GB is kinda over-kill if you can just on/off-load content.

I could see them putting out a 32,64,128 and nixing the 16 due to application sizes....or putting out 4 sizes now...and the 16 is sorta the entry level just used for minor gaming, movies and some browsing.

Oh yes, the 3rd Interation, the iPadacintosh™ Plus 3 with an 8MHz Motorola 68000 processor, 1-bit graphics, and a beautiful ultra-crisp CRT display. This one will even come with a handle.

my suggestions

why dont they put an SD card slot on it with iMovie and multiple apps being able to be open at the same time:D

I wasn't thinking of upgrading but.....LTE would be a sweet reason to change my mind.

According to various reports the difference in speed between 4G/LTE and 3G is supposed to be significant - though I'd like to see some actual metrics on that. Or user experience. Or both.

I have to think Apple would want to introduce LTE in the iPhone first. Otherwise you're basically validating your competitors point that LTE is current tech, while trying to sell an iPhone 4s (their main cash cow) that has "yesterday's" tech.

On the other hand, introducing in the iPhone first is far less significant seeing as the iPad doesn't necessarily rely upon mobile broadband (most units are sold as wifi only).

----------

I've never even considered getting an iPad with 3G because the iPhone creates a personal hotspot. I already have an excellent data plan on my iPhone. If I had a 3G iPad, I'd have to get yet another separate plan. I never use up my iPhone's data plan so it's better to share data with both iPad and iPhone.

Has anybody with an iPhone (or another personal hotspot enabled phone) purchased a 3G iPad? Why? What are the advantages?

Ultimately, we need pooled data plans between devices. That way you don't have to kill your phone battery to serve connectivity to your battery-efficient iPad.

They don't care about SD slots. Their pushing cloud connectivity, not physical memory.

I think there is a good chance of quad-core happening. The 4G LTE I'm not sold on. Tim cook is a numbers logistics guy so he will look at this from a certain stand point. Currently there is 3 iPad 2 variants. They all have the base 16, 32, and 64gb models. Then you have wifi version, AT&T 3g, and Verizon 3g versions. Would they really add 4G LTE varients with the possibility of a HSPA+ model. Then you have to think about how Sprints 4G LTE will advance in the next 6-12 months. I think iPhone 5 has a good chance of 4G LTE especially when 4G LTE has gone main stream globally.

or 16GB model is a reduced price iPad2 to put further pressure on Android tabs.

Problem is the mobile networks don't want to play ball re downloading lots of content on the go. They are all putting "fair use" caps in place. Public wifi sites are just too slow to download much. It's ok if all you need is a few music albums but what if you want a few HD movies. It would take hours. We really need a 128GB version if the iPad is to taken seriously as a laptop replacement.

Wouldn't a 128GB iPad 3 effect the iPod touch price?

This is great news. Though I hope they can meet the demand for the iPad 3. I just sold my iPad 2 and can't go much longer without an iPad!!!

I could also see them keeping the iPad 2 16gb version around and discounting it to compete with android tabs. Plus it would be great to sell to schools that want to use the ibooks format.

How many people around the world have access to 4G networks right now? I think it's coming to the UK in 2013 (get a move on Ofcom). I have no idea if this is a US only thing. Is it worth putting a 4G chip in the iPad 3 if 4G is not universal? Presumably they will have a 4G version and a 3G version.

My money's on Retina display. The screen resolution is the biggest thing dragging the iPad down at the moment. Add retina and it's a MUST HAVE.

While this is cool stuff, no way will I upgrade from my iPad2.

To me, the screen is fantastic as is, at least for my purposes. Quad core IS very nice, and I'm sure lots of apps will utilize this, but I don't use my iPad expecting the fastest of speeds. Again, for what I've done, the iPad2 is amazing as is.

If you have an iPad 1, I can see upgrading since you gain A LOT. But from an iPad 2, I'm just not seeing it.

Then again, I'm not rich. And I engraved mine so resale isn't there, but I knew that when I chose to do it.

Whoever gets it will love it, I'm sure.

PS: Funny though, the 7th is the day I can upgrade my phone, which I am. Bye bye LG Xenon, hello iPhone 4S!

Agreed. I have an iPad 2, and it suits my needs perfectly. I've had mine for about 9 months, and it still works perfectly (has a few dents though). The speed seems fast enough. I do lots of gaming on it and watch videos, but the quality seems pretty good. I don't even care if it comes with a better camera either, because I have my iPhone which has an 8 mp camera, and the iPad doesn't fit in my pocket to always carry around for pictures. For me, the iPad 2 is perfect

Nope. My iPad 2 is wifi only and I did the same as you. I really don't see the need for a 3g iPad. And I hardly have to use my hotspot at that as most places I'm at have wifi...

The need is for those that don't have an iPhone or a tethering-capable smart phone but still need Internet everywhere. Mifi is an OK option but it is a bit inconvenient to carry an extra thing. Someone maybe needing an occasional way to call someone (Voip + mic-headset) who doesn't want a monthly contract can also do quite well with on-demand 3G/4G just when they need it.
