No... At the iPhone OS 4.0 event in March (before the iPad is released), they will show off iPhone OS 4 with multitasking and show it off with the iPad using videoconferencing.

Then the iPad will be released shortly after in late March, with a built-in camera of limited utility. The iPad gains videoconferencing abilities in June when iPhone OS 4 is final and ships. You will be able to call and share your screen with the 2010 iPhone too.

They can't show off videoconferencing or the camera now because videoconferencing requires multitasking (it's not much use otherwise). The multitasking interface isn't a feature of OS 3.x

There will only be one revision of iPad in 2010.

The iPhone OS has always had multitasking-
but only Apple's Apps are allowed to do it.

I found the whole camera assembly for a 3G iphone on this website http://chinaontrade.com/iphone-3g-spare-parts-c-22.html for around $15 retail. So even if you assume that Steve cant get any better deal than I can online, we are talking maybe an additional $5 to get a full video cam in the iPad. $20! I cant get a camera for $20?! I would have given them $100 for that $20 piece of equipment. Make it WiFi only for christ sake!

walks away shaking head......:mad:

Update: I found the 3GS camera for just $9! Steve you are killin me. Really.

What if it's a supply issue? All of Apple's laptops have built-in cameras, as do the iPhone and the iPod Nano. That's tens of millions of camera modules needed annually, already ...

Warranty Failure no doubt.

Show us some progress photo's of you renovating your iPhone dude...

Personally i think a better solution for video conferencing would be a small camera unit that plugged into the dock port. that way it could have a swivel mount and maybe some stabilization mechinism in it. It wouldn't have to be that large or clunky and would probably provide better functionality that a built in camera i would not be surprised to see someone making something like this

You are right. It was Sony 1999. The little tube think at the top of the screen could be rotated 180 degrees to look away from the user. It also flipped the picture over so the view on the screen was right side up looking either way.

It was a super little portable at the time, but crippled with a high failure rate and Windows 2000.

Historically they have always announced new iPhone OS versions in March, to be released alongside the new iPhone models in June or July.

While that's correct, Steve-o is promising to release updates so fast that the competition will reel with shock and awe!

The sole purpose of iPhone OS 3.2 is to enable developers to write application specifically for the iPad, and to iron out bugs. Maybe that was why he [Steve Jobs] talked about updates [in a pace to knock off competitors] simply because he knows that iPhone OS 3.2 isn't ready for it.

And let's not forget the fact that Apple worked a full year on the iPad (software) and thus this camera hole can also be for the next iPad already – which might be released ahead of time based on consumer feed back and demand.

BTW: Am I the only person who was surprised by this $130 extra for 3G models?

Seriously, you'd have to be a moron to buy the 1.0 version of the iPad. But you just know there will be scores of dimwits sleeping outside the Apple stores the night before the iPad goes on sale.

So let's hope that none of the morons buy one, and Apple then stop making them because they did not sell any. That way you will never get your 2nd revision.

I'm still in denial.

iPhone OS 4.0 will be shown off before iPad's release. Multitasking and Videoconferencing are in there.

I think it will ship with a camera.

I agree, I think we will also see a redesigned home page, with wigdets (notice how Weather, Stocks were missing?)

This is what will happen over the next few months :-

Apple will announce OS 4.0 for iPad and iPhone in March BEFORE the iPad goes on sale. Just as they promise iPhone owners a free upgrade once it is released they will do the same to iPad users.

They will also announce the fact that the iPad has a camera, was not announced at first due to the fact that they needed 4.0 to show it in use and did not want to show 4.0 so early.

OS 4.0 is released mid year along with new iPhone hardware.

It includes :

- Some form of mulititasking;
- iChat;
- New Home Page with widgets;
- Plus other minor changes

Guess v2 will have the same frame.

Probably! :( You REALLY need to thin that bezel up Jony!!! And I know you want space for print media but PLEASE PLEASE give us a widescreen version!!! :(

This whole camera thing is pretty lame. I am sitting on the fence, if the camera were in there I wouldn't be on the fence at all and I would get one! But now I really am thinking hard about it!

What is your deal with screwing us over on cameras lately Apple??? :mad:

SWEET MOTHER... PLEASE LET IT BE TRUE! If only! I'm not getting my hopes up!

Not to put more wood on this fire, but YouTube wasn't added to the original iPhone OS until after the Macworld unveiling.

I think everyone should operate under the assumption that no camera will be added and then be surprised if it does, rather than the standard Macrumors method of expecting the rumors to come true and then going insane when they don't.

Cameras are not allowed in many places

It's a long shot but could Apple have left out the camera because they are not allowed in a lot of places?

The obvious problem with a camera on the iPad would be that when you hold this device you would transmit images of your nostrils. It would need some kind of tracking to work properly.

They didn't include it into 1st gen for very simple reason(s):

- they wanted to keep the price as low as they possibly can

- they are not 100% convinced themselves if iPad is going to take of or not, therefore lets make it as simple and cheap as possible and test the ground with it...

- in case 1st gen sells well we can add camera to it 2nd or 3rd time around

Something like that I presume :rolleyes:

OK, so Steve's ipad has what appears to be camera. But what about the ipads that were on display for the media on Jan 27th? Shouldn't that have been obvious for the journalists covering the event?

Not if it wasn't on those prototype models.

Well, actually I was thinking of getting one. Strictly from a development point of view of course :D

Maybe eBay will be my friend come camera-bound version 2...

BTW: Am I the only person who was surprised by this $130 extra for 3G models?

It requires a case change to incorporate the antenna, and includes a GPS which is not present in the WiFi-only model. So that plus the radio/modem chip for cellular, $130 seems about right.

Also, price it just a couple bucks more and no one buys the WiFi-only version!
