How so?

The Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD have weak ecosystem and build quality compared to an iPad. I also always hear about how laggy they are.

The screen on the iPad mini will also be 40% bigger than a 16:9 7" tablet, placing it in-between them and a full-size iPad.

You also have to compare pricing of equivalent capacity. A 16GB Nexus 7 is $250, only $79 less.

Multiple reports the Nexus is releasing the 32 gig Nexus 7 on October 29. That will be come the $249 model. The 16 gig will be the $199 model. At that point you are talking $130....over a 50% increase.

Gotta agree with you there. I don't hate the Android ecosystem as much as many people here do (I love my galaxy s3 - I don't care what anyone says) but the Android tablets are dissapointing in my opinion. IMO, they're good if you use them for very specific things such as reading and watching videos. However, I don't like them for web surfing, games or any other stuff that relies on smoothness. And don't get me started on OS updates. Pain. In. The. Ass.

Let's just say you get what you pay for.

At $659 for the highest end model it better have a retina screen with LTE and probably an A6 processor. I bet Apple is forced to revise the full size iPad at the same time to justify the higher price.

I don't get that. Whatever you buy, the price is made up of the price for some basic model (16 GB, WiFi) and then you can upgrade from 16 GB to 32 GB or 64 GB, and/or from WiFi only to 3G/whatever (no memory upgrades for iPad 2). The upgrades are the same, whatever basic iPad you have, so they cost the same, whatever basic iPad you have. So looking at the price with the most expensive upgrades is totally pointless.

Google will have to drop prices to compete with the iPad mini.

Looks like the 16GB Nexus is dropping to $200 and the 32GB Nexus will be $250.

And Google knows it.

I just told her it's probably going to be $329 and she said damn oh well Nevermind. I asked, are you going to get it? "Nope".
Had it been $299 she would buy it lol.

For $19 everyone would say "yes". For $9,999 everyone would say "no". Now start with $19 and increase the price by $10 at a time. Everyone you ask will switch at some point. Your GF switched between $299 and $329. That's all.

I don't get people's reaction here.

1) Why would you expect this to be the same price as tablets Amazon/Google make no profit on? Apple already dominates the tablet market with a highly profitable tablet. No way they would cannibalize its sales with a smaller tablet that generate no profit.
.

Exactly, I see a lot of wishful/delusional thinking on this. Apples screen size is also a fair bit bigger than 7" android screens, so it would cost even more to build than those.

Apple doesn't chase no-profit margin products. Chasing competitors selling products for ZERO profit is like jumping off a cliff because your friend did it. Stupid and destructive.

My estimate was $350, but $329 is possible.

$250 is just plain silly for a product intended to make a profit. That is wishful thinking, not realistic thinking.

People need to relax. It's NOT going to be starting at 8GB. This is an iPad, not an iPod Touch.

16/32/64 will be the 3 choices. Apple is not going to sabotage their own product (iPod Touch) and price the mini at $199. $329 IMO is just right. But I mean, if it is going to start off at $250/300, you won't see me complain either. ;)

You guys realize you're crying over $30 difference right? "I'd totally get it at $299. But NO WAY I'm paying $329." Oh brother.

Given Apple's solid tablet ecosystem, mindshare and possible cannibalization of their bigger iPad, they would have been crazy to sell this with minimal margin like Google does.

Yes, Apple has never been about low margins. But I wonder if they let Amazon or Google get a foot in the door at the low end, that when people upgrade to a full size tablet, they'll choose Android.

Short term, no question a low-margin entry point is a bad idea. Long term, it may be a strategic mistake not to have an iPad at the $249 price point to own the low end "entry market" as well as the rest of it.

I remember that too, everyone thought they were going to have a very expensive tablet on their hands... and now $499 is too expensive.

It's so hilarious people think this. People "thought" it would be $999 because Apple went around dropping that hint to reporters. It was a purposeful misinformation campaign so that when they announced the $499 price it would seem "amazing" (remember, the whole "unbelievable price" spiel was a clear part of their marketing). "People" never thought the iPad had to be 999 at launch, Apple just did a snow job.

I can't believe people don't remember this coming out after the fact and still believe Apple did us some big favor.

That is wishful thinking, not realistic thinking.

That sums up most people on MacRumors these days.

I can already predict a flood of whiners also expecting the 13" rMBP to be $1499 with a discrete graphics card. I don't think I'll even go on MacRumors the day of the announcement :p.

It's incredible how fast technology evolves yet people are never satisfied. They always overexpect and don't learn from their disappointment. I hope that's not how they are in life in general.

I agree with this. Apple spreads false rumors so when they come out with a $249-299 price, people are blown away. It's the same with taxes. A government will float the idea with local news they need a 10% when in fact they need a 5% increase then compromise at what they really need. I think apple does the same.

I may have to make a tough decision now cause 329 is just out of what I wanted to spend, Chicago taxes are harsh. Might end up going with a cheap NetBook even.

When has apple ever surprised anyone with lower pricing?

Anything above $299 for 16g is a major fail. I don't like that at all. Looks like we are going to have another round of sell off on monday, was hoping for a rebound.

You guys realize you're crying over $30 difference right? "I'd totally get it at $299. But NO WAY I'm paying $329." Oh brother.

EXACTLY. People will pay 100 dollars extra for a useless protection plan, 50 bucks for a case and another 100 or so on useless accessories yet 30 bucks over their prayer is gonna break the bank.

So that puts the base model at £250, I think that is just too expensive, we have to assume 16GB will be the lowest capacity (if it was to be 8GB that would be a joke at £250) and if the rumours about the Nexus 7 dropping the price of the 16GB version and bringing in a 32GB version, I just don't see the vast majority of the "normal" consumer ever being swayed to spend £250 for a 16GB iPad mini over a 16GB Nexus 7 for £159 (esp considering you can get a 32GB Nexus 7 for £199)

We'll have to wait and see but at these rumoured prices it's just way to expensive.

Price seems too high for me, but I will wait to see the spec first.

Also why not 8gb? there is a market for people who do not need a lot of apps. A lot of people will buy this for their kids to play games on, they are not going to fill it with a ton of media or 50 or so apps.

There is also a market for people who want this primarily as book reader, web surfing tool, again you don't need a lot of capacity for that.

Reality check

Here's a reality check for everyone. It's not rocket science;

The "Mini" was always going to have comparable characteristics to the iPad2 except for size. It makes no sense to MORE THAN DOUBLE ppi for a so-called "retina" screen when you are trying to cut costs AND the simple shrinkage of the screen size combined with the SAME pixel dimensions ALREADY makes the screen 35% sharper than the already loved iPad2. Duh.

Since the device has no other way of saving costs other than a somewhat smaller battery (maybe $10 savings) and a somewhat smaller screen (maybe $20) savings especially considering the higher pixel density), how on earth did you ever imagine they were going to price it significantly lower than the ALREADY DISCOUNTED iPad2????

Frankly, I think $329 is a gift if this has the same functionality as the iPad2, and it still could be better (especially since the screen WILL be better). For all of you threatening to buy someone else's piece of crap, PLEASE DO. I would rather Apple make quality products.

It's 30 bucks. Quit crying about it. If you can afford 300 you can afford 330.

Listen, just because you might be able to afford an extra $30, doesn't mean everyone can as well. Some people have a budget for these type of purchases, and $300 might be their absolute max for all we know. If they say they'll buy it at $299 and not $330, then let it be...don't be a jerk about it.

It's like if I have an absolute max on a house purchase of $300,000....I'm not just going to be like, "oh, that house is only $30,000 more, what's $30,000 more when we're already spending $300,000." It just doesn't work that way.

More reality check:

Oh, and for you "Why not 8gb?" people;

You do realize that the component price difference between an 8gb and a 16gb chip is probably about $3, right?....

And the Nexus 7 isn`t quality. Yea..............
