I picked up a inexpensive case from Amazon for my new 12.9 gen2 and one for my wife’s new 10.5. The brand is Valkit. Was not sure about the quality before I ordered, but received them today. For the price, we think they are really good. They have different colors available.

The 10.5 version

I would have gone with the Fintie 10.5 or IVAPO 10.5 version because it keeps the apple pencil protected inside the case along the spine. For the 12.9 version, unfortunately, I haven't found anything (*sort of, but depends*) on the cheap to house the pencil on the inside of the case. Scroll down to see the 12.9 options.

i just ordered a new Pro and i have a apple blutooth keyboard for when i need one so i didnt want a keyboard case i like that this holds the Pen securely

The intrusive placement of the pen holder would drive me mad.
Yeah, me too. I'd much rather just store it in a pocket inside my bag like I do.

Having scoured the web all over for a case for maybe three weeks that will safely house the apple pencil on the inside of the case (because I didn't like the aesthetics of having the pencil exposed to external environmental factors), the only ones that fit what I wanted were the following:

Dedicated pencil compartment inside the case:
STM Atlas, STM Dux, Speck Stylefolio
(the STM Dux probably has the best drop protection within this category)
(however, none will accommodate a pencil using a pencil grip)

Protected Pencil holder using a loop mechanism on the interior:
Sketchbook, Valkit, Skech
(both Valkit and Skech has the added advantage of a protective flap for ipad's camera lens)
(But do realize with any loop stretchy nylon mechanism, the loop may eventually stretch out, leaving your pencil vulnerable. A pencil clip may or may not help).

Something else
Zugu Cases (external pencil holder)
Maybe something to consider if you want a case that will allow the use of the apple pencil wrapped with a gripper.

DIY Pencil Holder
(easy, simple): I like the first video's demonstration better for its aesthetic and function.

STM Atlas with a dedicated pencil compartment (inside case). They do have a 2017 version that accommodates the camera flash. Pricey @ $70

STM Atlas Youtube Review ( I don't understand anything spoken, so by default it was simply a visual review to me)

STM Dux with a dedicated pencil compartment (inside case) Pricey @ $70

Aesthetically, I don't like this one because of the clear back. But I do like the magnetic flap that keeps the cover in place. Please note: Some amazon reviews say the pencil might slide back and forth in the housing slot, and that could put a drain on the pencil's battery. Or you could simply add some type of felt material to keep it from sliding.
STM Dux brief demonstration

The following is the Dux for the Ipad Air, but it's essentially the same design. This has a more in depth review. Please be aware that the stand function is limited to one viewing angle and one typing position. One thing to be concerned about with the stand function (check out the amazon reviews) is that it uses two mechanism for stability: (1) Magnetic hold (2) Physical wedge hold. The front flap wedges between two notches at the back of the case, and over time that could cause permanent groove marks to the front flap, and ultimately may or may not lose its intended stand function.

Speck Stylefolio (2015 version only) with a dedicated pencil compartment (inside case) @ $20 - $35
However the camera cut out will not accommodate the new flash. There isn't one available for the 2017 version unfortunately.

Valkit 12.9 Folio with pencil holder (inside case) using pencil loop @$23

(Camera cut out according to the website accommodates the 2017 version, but customer image shows 2015 version, however, question and answer section, it supposedly was confirmed that it will accommodate the 2017 12.9 ipad)

Skech 12.9 Folio with pencil holder (inside case) using pencil loop @$40 (Camera cut out only accommodates the 2015 12.9 version... don't know if there's a 2017 version because online pictures are limited, I have not come across any reviews for this product).

Skech 12.9 Walmart $39.99, sold directly by Walmart so return process would be much easier than any other vendor.

Incipio 12.9 (2017) @ ~ $10-$15 THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE A PENCIL HOLDER. I am only mentioning this particular case if you want a case cover that will protect the camera lens. You can find this on ebay at around $10 dollars or less, but please pay attention to the model year. They have both 2015 and 2017 versions. The 2017 version will accommodate the camera flash.

Zugu Prodigy @ $70 Pencil holder on the outside of the case, but still better protected than many other cases.
They have a new version coming out this month.

Zugu Case @ $45-$50 Has a zipper slot or a pencil loop affix to the side

Im looking for a case with a cover (folio i think is the word) that works with a glass screen protector and protects the ipad pretty well (esp. the corners). What would you guys suggest for $50 or less? Thanks guys.

Yeah, me too. I'd much rather just store it in a pocket inside my bag like I do.

Not sure why these case designers do not have the pencil holder on the rear. I do not like something sticking out off the rim of my iPad and distracting my attention to it when working or viewing.

Did some more internet search for different casing options for the 12.9 and stumbled across the following Incase Book Jacket. Unfortunately, it's only for the 12.9 2015 model (camera cutout does NOT accommodate the camera flash)

Incase Book Jacket $59.99; 12.9 2015 version only. Includes pencil holder. Looks like the first case that I've come across that will also allow the use of a pencil grip, so that's pretty cool.... as long as
you don't care about the camera flash.

EDIT: But do take note that the edges of the iPad isn't well protected with this case at all. Personally, I would probably bypass this case, unless you're simply going for aesthetics, or you also have a sleeve case to carry it in. Look at the 3rd image below. The edges of the ipad doesn't have any protection at all.

Can you guys please recommend a protective case for the ipad pro? I have the versa vu from targus and was wondering if theres anything better. Thanks!

Are there any thin 3rd party Keyboard cases that use the connector instead of bluetooth? Thread is pretty long and some of the early links don’t work anymore anyway.

Should add that a pencil holder would be a bonus too.

I have a 12.9 IPP 1st gen with the ASK.

I also have a last gen IPP 9.7 with a Logitech Keycase. Not 100% happy with either.

Have you tried the Logitech Pro Slim Combo Keyboard?

I am in the same boat, and I have been reading that the Slim Combo is way better engineered than the previous Logitech Create, especially in terms of weight and bulk.

Other then those, and the ASK, there aren't any other keyboards that uses the Smart Connector.

I’ll have to get a closer look at the Logitech Pro Slim next time I’m at a Best Buy. Thanks,

So Got my IPP the week of Thanksgiving and without a cover, because the store I bought from had none that I wanted... kept it in the box until I got a cover though... The iPad Pro is a little difficult to handle (Slippery as hell new)... so figured Best to pull back the reigns... Costly little guy for sure... I went with a 12.9"

I didn't read through all the pages of comments on this thread, but kind of scanned and didn't see the cover/case I settled on. I got a Targus Versa-Vue case... It's called the Classic case, but I found it for 39 bucks (I guess on sale) and was shocked it was so cheap. The Targus Site has it at 69 dollars. I got it at Best buy, Tuesday before Thanksgiving, so not a Black Friday Deal or Cyber whatever... Here's the current item on BB website if anyone is interested.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/targus...ro-latest-model-black/5853618.p?skuId=5853618

So here's my take: The simplicity of this case when you first stick your IPP in it, is kind of lackluster... I expected some really schmancy security system to hold it in so it doesn't"fall out". But was very happy with the fit and how secure it actually feels. The Materials it's made of feel pretty nice. Good quality surfaces and they appear pretty durable for now.

Alll of the features of the iPad are well provided for, including the microphone, headphone jack, speakers and buttons. It even has room and access space provided for the Apple Keyboard for later (I didn't buy the keyboard just yet... trying to not buy anything I won't use enough to justify... It may become necessary later). It has a Loop for the pen on the "back" which is probably the most Half Baked thing about it, but I found it is actually pretty OK for my needs. If I Travelled more, I'd probably want something a bit different. But For now it'll do. Holds pretty well, but I can see that it will likely lose it's grip over a short time... but I could be wrong. The "Mount" the iPad is slipped into Rotates whatever direction you like, via the bog "hole" in the back, that allows your Apple logo to show nicely. This is one of those things that shows off you spent the money on a high dollar Apple Product... Some like to show it, some don't... I'd have been fine without the hole, but I do like the Rotational ability it provides. The only other adverse thing, is the magnetic flap that helps keep the "Folio" part closed when you shut the cover, It kinda stays in the way unless you take some extra effort to pull it back a bit farther and tuck it behind the Tablet holder portion when in use. This is only a minor irritant, but I think they could have thought through it a little better and maybe put it on the other side of the case. When using or viewing the iPad with it rotated to the Portrait Position, it is no bother at all, but aligned with the rest of the case it just gets in the way and makes you deal with it somehow. I'm sure after a while it'll loosen up and be flexible enough to just fold over backward... but new it is rather rigid and tries to fight back just a little. It does stick to the cover magnetically if you bend it on back, but it will flop back over at times with any significant movement... Your call on how to deal. If you look at one in the store before buying, you can easily tell if it's a big enough problem for you to tuck behind the case portion or not... for me (and for the price) I found it was something I could handle. I like the fact you can pretty much set whatever angle you like for viewing as well. There are 4 "pre-set places, but the material allows you to set it at any angle that doesn't slip. And for all the folks that are asking... EASY access to plug in the Charge cable as well.

The Cover I got is Dark Brown and looks like something a professional would carry around to taunt their minions with... "If i have to open my Folio..." kind of thing... LOL, But they offer it in Black as well. Couldn't tell the difference much... The Premium Version looked like the same cover but with the newfangled Fabric feel. I thought it felt cheap and was harder to grip with one hand, but everyone will have their opinions on that part... I figured to share the details more than decide for everyone that "this one is best". I can see room for improvement. But not a ton. And for Someone who's stretched their budget really hard, there is a Clearnce model as well, without the flap thingy that you have to deal with... but it also has some elastic piece I see bigger issues down the road for... but budgets are what they are.

Hope this helps folks see yet another version of a a case/folio/cover with a hands on review.

Hey, cool! Was just gonna post about this. I got the Versa Vu (black) you linked to and it is wonderful. Seems very protective and functional and made of good quality materials. Love that it has a plastic shell that protects the corners and holds it in. The magnetic flap is easily dealt with; you just flip it back and it sticks. It has never unstuck in my usage scenarios. I looked for a case for a long time thats better than this and i havent found one.

Heads up! BB has the logitech slim berry color for $75. I did not buy since im very much all set with smart keyboard

I decided to go with the Logitech Slim Combo for my 12.9 gen2. Picked it up at Best Buy. Although, I didn’t get the berry color - I have the black one. I had $20 certificate for rewards and a $100 gift card. I paid $149 which is pretty much full price. I probably could have found it for less if I would have been willing to shop but it was more of an impulse buy since they had it in stock.

I have no base of comparison to the ASK or the Create (never used either of them), but I can say for certain that I am extremely impressed with this model. The Smart Connector magnet is definitely strong and it does not feel like it would easily lose connection to the iPad - you need to provide some effort to disconnect it. Not too much bulk to carry - no batteries to worry about charging - looks stylish and minimalistic - the Apple Pencil holder/loop is firm and does not allow for the pencil to be removed or fall out without some effort being placed to remove it. Keyboard backlighting is a definite plus and nice to have. The function keys are also of benefit since I am used to Apple keyboards. It does provide scratch and scuff protection. With that said, I am not sure that any real drop or fall would render the iPad protected. I think opinions will vary on the protection is provides.

FWIW, I definitely would recommend the Logitech Combo Slim to anyone looking for good keyboard/case combination.

I have the Apple Smart Keyboard Case for the iPad Pro and it’s not great for me. I don’t like the non-adjustable tilt and I really don’t like that the keys are not backlit. I have an Incipio Clamcase for my iPad Air2 and it’s awesome! I’ve been waiting and hoping that Incipio will release a Clamcase for the 12.9 iPad Pro but it does not look like it’s coming. Are there any decent backlit keyed, adjustable tilt keyboard cases for the 12.9 Pro?

I like the Logitech Combo Slim.

I recently bought an iPad Pro 12.9 2017. I love the versatility provided by some case like Pipetto which implements both the position of the official Apple cover and of the other origami cases.
However it seems it lacks of a magnet that holds the cover to the back of the iPad when you are holding the tablet with an hand. Is it true? Is there any other solution that would fulfil my requirements?
I would really like to have a case that allows to have the iPad in "portrait mode" since I would love to connect is to my laptop as an external monitor and work with codes.

what is good keyboard case ? I've used Zagg in past but don't see good reviews for it for iPad 12.9 second generation.
