iPad 2. iPad Air 1

A5 processor A7 processor

32 bit 64 bit

512mb of RAM 1GB of RAM

Yeah, the Air 1 should perform better than IPad 2, however, how,it will perform on IOS 11? Will be slower and more buggy ?? Apple should have put the A7X processor. They made a huge mistake putting an A7 processor to power an 9.7 Ipad . Apple saw the mistake and launched IPad Air 2 with A8X processor, after IPad Pro with A9X processor

Leave it to me to buy both the 3rd Gen and not upgrade again until the Air 1 :p

I basically used the two worst iPads ever made as my daily drivers...
Here's a rule of thumb that has helped me....

Buy the iPad that is the first generation of a RAM bump (with CPU bump).
iPad 1 = first one, buy!
iPad 2 = 512MB
iPad 4 = 1GB
iPad Air 2 = 2GB
iPad Pro (12.9) = 4GB

(I have found that RAM is the greatest determining factor in the performance and longevity of an iOS device)

So I have been recommending, buy an Air 2 (for regular sized iPad), 12.9 iPP (for larger), optionally: wait for a 4GB 9.7 iPP.

While it is true that the iPad Air probably isn't as bad as the iPad 3. Both of these iPads are not good products from Apple. These are the two worst iPads they ever made in terms of longterm use. If Apple puts out an update and it causes the iPad to not perform well, they should keep it from updating your device, make a scaled down version of the iOS update, or allow users to downgrade if it doesn't perform well.
Apple already scales down iOS features for older devices. For example, the Air doesn't have side-by-side multitasking. I reckon the iPad 3 does hold the record for worst performance long term but I have used the iPad 2, 3, 4 and Air, and to be honest, the Air isn't any worse than the 2, 3 and 4 at their respective ages with the requisite firmware updates. In fact, I reckon the Air is actually doing better than the older models at the same stage of their use-cycle.

Yah the fact of not having a X series processor should of been a big no buy sign for people but the whole 64 bit revolution kinda was cool anyway. The problem with Air was it was the last to have 1gb of ram too itn

No the normal air and mini are still main products Apple will not skimp, both get A10 and both Pro get A10X. If the next Pro 9.7 didn't get the A10X chip that would cause a uproar.

I think the mini line are done .There is no reason to buy an Mini if you already have Plus models with 5.5 inches .The mini has 7.9 inch . Mini line are done . Now is the Pro line . I think the Air will be the low cost iPad replacing the mini .12.9 IPad is gorgeous . Definitely I will get one in the future .

And if you don't have the Plus models?
Yes the mini is still a viable option for us who have a smaller iPhone. Even if someone has a plus they still might want a mini for novels or apps and games. Not everyone wants a big iPad. I also know many who would say the plus is not big enough for proper reading or content consumption.

Also, some might prefer the iPad mini's 4:3 aspect ratio. :)

definitely agreed on the mouse thing.
I am sorry to say but i will put it out there iPads will " Never Have Mouse Support" if you need that get a Macbook etc..

I really thought the Mini Line was going to be for me when i picked up the Mini2 3 or 4 years ago but since then i have gone back to a Macbook Air and to a Macbookpro again come to find out that i can get rid of my MacBook Pro and strictly use a iPad Pro 12.9 inch for everything I do and if I really need a MacBook Pro I can use the one I gave to my dad but it has been a month now and I have not needed to borrow my old macbookpro at all everything has been get on my ipad pro 12.9

12.9 iPP is my primary mobile device (replacing both my 11" MBA + iPad Air 2). I haven't found the weight to be an issue. As for true-tone, force-touch, and iP7 home button, the lack of those things haven't impeded my use in the least. But I can understand why some would want those things.

I use my 12.9 inch IPP of my primary Mobile device (replaced MacBook Pro 15"+ iPad Air 2) so far the last 10 months I have found no fault or issues with it whatsoever at the point of purchase I already knew I wasn't going to need to upgrade for a year or two hope that comes true but only time will tell :)

Comparing 5.5 inches of the Plus with the 7.9 inch screen on the iPad mini doesn't tell the story. The screen on the mini is over twice the size of the iPhone Plus screen.

I currently have a 128gb pro now, but I would like to pick up a 12.9 pro 2 256gb if it is enticing enough.

Hell will freeze over....twice, before stingy Apple puts 8 gigs of anything in an iOS device. Having said that, I agree. I would buy a 2017 iPad Pro2 9.7 IF they put a bare minimum of 4 Gb of ram but hopefully 6GB and either the A10X or A11 in the 2017 iPads. Otherwise no way in hell would I touch the underwhelming iPad Pro's. I returned my 9.7 Pro due to what seemed to be a big memory issue according to the store. I am currently and happily using my Macbook air with 8 gigs of ram and the i7 processor. its been an awesome portable laptop.

The current 12.9 inch has 4gb this is plenty and the 9.7 inch has 2gb. The new iPad Pros for 2017 will have a A10X. That is how they have always done the processors.

Yes, if the 12.9 has an A10 chip. It will be 18 months since the pro debuted, come March. Releasing a pro without a chip upgrade would be unthinkable.

Went from iPad 2 to iPad Air 2, I think I wouldn't mind a fancy iPad Pro 2.

The thing is though, this one is pretty new, and they work fantastic. I see no reason to upgrade except "i want to".
Not that I have the money, bit we can dream.

The big Pro has some poor poor quality cams in there though. The smaller one seems to be a better fit for me.

But I am hoping the pro 2 will take away the difference, and then it's a matter of just budget vs size.

The iPads never have a new chip, they have what the iPhone has but X form. The A10X will probably have a 2.5ghz speed if the phone can manage a 2.3 ghz. As for the GPU it will be essentially be a higher speed 12 core version of what's in the iPhone 7. It will be really nice but with a Air 2 I'm more than taken care of for my basic productivity. 2gb ram has yet to be a issue for me and the A8X keeps iOS 10 humming along. The A11X in the Pro 3 will be a much larger leap in terms of performance.

I think the A10X will bring some significant performance improvements, . The 2 version of every device (iPad and iPhone) focus on internal improvements. Pro 2 wont be different

I don't expect ram to change in the Pro 2 (either size), the A10X will be a really big step up from A9 with quad core and faster clock speeds, but do not be fooled because the A11X be a even bigger step a year later. In Pro 3 however the A11X will be on a 10nm process allowing for both faster clock speeds, less power consumptiontion, and less size on the chip die allowing for bigger GPU , probably a beefy 12 core still but they could possibly put a 16 core GPU if they manage a 8 core GPU in the A11 for iPhone 7s. I'd compare the Pro 2 to Air 2 when it came out but if you wait a year the iPad Pro was a big jump in performance compared. The Pro 2 will also seem great but a year later the Pro 3 will really take the cake with performance improvements. This is my opinion anyway and the Pro 2 will still be a excellent device. The A10X will catch up to intels i7 chip in the ultra thin laptops, the A11X will surpass intel and become industry leading, unless intel pushes out there 10nm before Holiday 2017

Most likely OLED won't make it to the Pro until the A12X.

That's why I'm planning to get the Pro 12.9 v2 which likely have the A10X.

You can wait for the A11X if you want to.

Never cared about the whole OLED thing, Apple is making some great displays without it, honestly might wait for Pro 4 A12X as the Air 2 can easily go another 2 years

Air 2 (2gb of RAM)is the new longevity model , It will receive more IOS updates than IPad 2 (with miserable 512 mb of RAM .)
[doublepost=1476724094][/doublepost]I am really satisfied with my Air 2 .

Yes on the longevity blurb.

People that bought on Pro 9.7" who didn't need the pencil feature specifically...made a less optimal choice.
