What's that weird dent in one side of the X display though? I can't find a setting to remove it. The Note 8 for example doesn't have it. I sure love me a clean, symmetrical rectangle that doesn't intrude on the content.

I'm curious as to what examples anyone could provide of the notch intruding on any content.

funny because I returned my x because of the screen. terrible off-axis colors.

I came close to doing the same thing. But in the end I liked everything else about the X so much I decided to keep it.

I'll never go back to opening and navigating a phone clicking a home button.

Agree with that. To this day, I am still amazed almost every day by the quality of my iPad Pros [iPads Pro] and iPhone X.....
Does anyone use TrueTone on the iPhone? Most people i've asked, have turned it off... (myself included)

Yes, I use TrueTone. I was made a believer of it ever since the first iPad Pro introduced it.

“Super Retina display that's entirely screen (aside from the notch)”, Then it’s not entirely screen. It is entirely screen or it isn’t. And the iPhone X IS NOT entirely screen.

That would be quite hard if you keep True Tone activated on your iPhone, constantly changing its white point depending on the ambient light situation.

Shouldn’t be a problem for Apple to include the True Tone algorithms into macOS but I guess they keep it to be marketed as a hardware-bound feature of an upcoming Mac generation, like they did with Siri on the iPhone.
The ambient light situation around my Mac is pretty static though.

I wouldn’t call them thick. But you’re right. There is no bezel-less phone. And honestly who cares? This obsession with bezels or screen to body ratio is so stupid.
I dunno actually. I feel the same way about bezels as I do about making the phone thinner. People say “we want longer battery life and headphone sockets, nobody cares about making it any thinner” and I feel a little sheepish cos I’d love it to be thinner.

I rather have some side bezel than a useless edge screen and chin on the bottom of the gs9 or others. iPhone goes for an overall equal bezel.
Absolutely, I’d only like them to make the bezels thinner if they do it with style, unlike Samsung and others. That probably means keeping them the same thickness all the way around but it might not, Apple are better at design than I am so I’ll leave them to decide that.

Yeah I’ve had my iPad Pro 10.5 since last summer and still thoroughly enjoy it. I’ve still got a black iPhone 7 Plus and still love the display on it to be honest, but am looking forward to the iPhone X replacement this year. Will be a nice upgrade from my 7 Plus.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 7/8 plus display, Apple makes some of the best lcd panels. But once you experience OLED it’s haed to go back.
Love the display on the X. It’s not overly saturated.

I like the X but the screen is just so soft. I have a hairline scratch right through the middle of it and all I did was place it face down on my desk - in a case (no screen protector). My 7+ was way more used and abused than my X and it has zero screen issues. When is that bullet proof glass coming?!

I think they call it a "bad design decision".

LOL. This is hilarious!! You folks really like the word "design."

First, no, you don't "design" specifications in the same way that you design a chip. Second, you don't need nearly as many engineers, billions in R&D or hefty IP portfolio to write specs for off-the-shelf parts -- with tiny tweaks here and there. Lastly, yes, at the end of the day, the only reason that Samsung is at the top with 95+% of the market share and ranked #1 in mobile displays for several years is largely due to their superior processing/manufacturing/engineering, not Apple's wonderful "spec" writing or PO (purchase order).

Ok. Take it from someone that is in the contract manufacturing business. Just because my shop has expertise in fabrication that my customers simply do not possess, I do not take any credit whatsoever for my customers products, because they’re not mine. I sell a service and expertise.

This is not to take anything away from Samsung, who is clearly top of their field when it comes to producing handheld OLED panels. But there is absolutely NO truth in implying these are Samsung displays. Because they aren’t. End of story.

In case it wasn’t apparent, viewing the differences between Apples OLED/LCD panels versus competitors. Apple has historically always had very well regarded displays in their products. And it’s not because they’ve always relied on Samsung. They’ve contracted many manufacturers. But rather because their contribution to the end result does have a noticeable impact to the quality of the display. Whether that’s higher standards resulting in lower yields, whatever.

Define that contribution however you want, design engineering whatever. It doesn’t really matter. Point is, this panel is not a Samsung product anymore than the iPhone X is a Foxconn product.

?? that's odd.. Samsung won SID awards past several years until the last one, when Apple finally switched to Samsung bleeding cutting edge AMOLED display tech in their iPhone.

Hmm.. I guess the iPhone display wasn't really your reason for sticking to Apple? ;) or at least your misguided view doesn't seem to reinforce or negate SID's decision to award Apple iPhone X this year.

What's your problem dude? A Samsung user?

The guy said that the reason he sticks with Iphones/Ipads is because of the display - doesn't mean that he was talking about Iphone X. Just because Samsung wins all previous display award doesn't mean that all human will buy Samsung phones. There are many, many still prefer Iphones screen whether its the new X or the previous lcd. You need to accept that.

By the way, Samsung manufactured the oled for X but Apple design it. That's a fact. That's why some pundits/reviewers said the X's oled screen is better than Samsung's oled screen. Its debatable, yes, but one thing for sure it proves that the oled screen for Iphone X is different compared to Samsung's. Why? I repeat again - because Apple design it but Samsung manufactured it. Its not like Samsung just put a S9 screen on Iphone X. lol

Seriously, its a simple fact it amazes me you couldn't understand it.

Apple has an OLED R&D engineering group. Apple has made improvements to Samsung’s display, the most obvious being the sub-pixel geometry that allows a higher fill factor than does Samsung’s displays manufactured for themselves and others. It’s responsible for the higher brightness in the iPhone X display.

Those who try to discount Apple’s engineering contribution to the Samsung-manufactured displays thought the rectangular (vs. oval) green sub-pixels were a Samsung innovation, and that they would appear in the S9. But the OLED display in the S9 has the same oval, green sub-pixel as the S8.

Apple said they did a lot of work at the sub-pixel level, but Samsung fans don’t like to acknowledge Apple’s contribution to the increased quality of the Samsung OLED display in the iPhone X. There may be differences in the anti-aliasing algorithms as well, I’m not sure.

Everyone's at the top end in the industry is using the same Gorilla glass so not sure wth your talking about; you probably did something you can't recall to that phone.

Duh! and who do you think made AMOLED displays for Apple's iPhone X?
(hint: the same company that won pretty much all previous SID awards).

Duh! We know Apple is not a manufacturer. We know every Apple product is manufactured by someone contracted by Apple. What you guys don't realise is that every single one of these things is designed by Apple/Build for Apple's specific requirements. So before you run to fast to give credit Samsung for iPhone X display, remember that is was build strictly under Apple's specific requirements.
And to give Samsung credit, yes.... it makes gorgeous displays and excellent phones (the recent years) Galaxy phones are also gorgeous and nothing like 3 or 4 years ago. If it did run iOS i would definitely use Galaxy 8 or 9.

I have both of these sitting on my desk right now, actually.

Samsung may manufacture the display, but it's Apples design. One does have to wonder if Apple has some sort of clause in their contracts stating that a manufacturer can't take any of their designs to be used in their own products (ie, a Super Retina Display ending up on a Galaxy S10 or whatever they call their next one. (If it's S10, I hope Chevrolet sues the pants off them, lol)).

Lol. You have well and truly drunk the Kool-aid. The only thing that is “custom” about the iPhone X panel (which is for all intents and purposes a Samsung display using Samsung’s proprietary Super AMOLED technology), is the way it uses Samsung’s foldable OLED technology to fold the display back under itself at the bottom of the device to eliminate the “chin” you see on similar Android devices.

So, Apple buys Samsung OLED displays, special order a notch to be cut out so it doesn't look identical to Galaxy phablet that Samsung popularized, apply their own color profile and pay some unknown company for a self award. I worked for a company that received a JD Power award and it's the same self paid research and award because no sane company would go into business to conduct free research and issue free awards. There has to be a return to stay in business and that return is marketing disguised as research.

Regardless as to "the spin" in the article, to-date, Apple has ZERO "10-bit color" mobile displays !

I give the displays in the article a C+ grade, compared to what they could /should be !

Rec. 2100-compliant mobile displays are just-around the corner, & will Blow everyone & everything Out of the Water !

10-bit (extended color) ICtCp is key (to reduce algorithm crosstalk with extended / vivid / vibrant colors), plus PQ & HLG !
