Isn't this what happen to the iPad Mini though? The problem is simply moving up the chain because the iPad Pro is the flagship now. Boy am I glad I bit the bullet last year and just spent the cash on getting the Air 2 over the Air 1. It's been totally worth it.

Not necessarily. Apple could be transitioning to a 2-year cadence with the iPad. It's possible the Air 3 comes out next year with the A9 or A9X and Pencil support, while the mini 4 remains unchanged, and is updated in 2017 with the A10.

Why? Makes a lot of sense to me.

Apple is letting potential customers know when they will begin accepting iPad Pro orders online. And that they'll be available in stores later in the week. I don't think that's something people will have difficulty understanding, and it will be easy enough to purchase one for those who are really interested.

I'm talking about the fact that pre-orders showed up at three different non-Apple vendors, with two different "available" dates before Apple uttered a word about the rollout. They usually control the message very sharply with new product rollouts.

I know, they've not given much info away. What time do orders start on the 11th? Can we pre-order on the 11th and collect in-store on the 13th? They haven't even revealed the international pricing yet. I know what it costs in the US but how much does it cost in the UK?

My goodness, the chomping at the bit over ordering ASAP! Every other post is complaining about how long people have to wait to order and receive delivery. People are wasting money on overnight shipping and then going crazy when overnight fails to be overnight. For what critical task does everyone need this thing sooner than yesterday??

I've been waiting for such a device for years but I'm still going to wait until I've TRIED one in person before I order one.

They're too busy working on the car to worry about details.

This is MacRumors, where the freaks live. Don't worry too much about them. I'll do the same as I did with the aTV -- wait until it's on the Apple Store and then click "Buy". It'll turn up and I'll play with it. Easy.

Gotta get something off my chest here. We don't need a 12.9" iPad Pro to make the iPad a better device. Where's the love for the Air 2?

Stupid forced upsell. The air is plenty big and totally under utilized for its size. Make a bigger iPad if you want to but don't force people to buy it for trivial reasons.

"don't force people to buy it..."

Jeez..

I honestly don't know why they continue to keep the older models on sale. Surely it would be better to only sell the latest models. Otherwise it just gets confusing for most customers who don't follow Apple that closely. It's not like there is a big price difference between old and new models. Since Steve sadly passed away they seem to have lost that mantra of "keep it simple".

If keeping older hardware in the sales lineup slows down the rate of obsoleting hardware via bloated OS updates, I'm happy to see older generation hardware remain in the lineup.

You need to keep your opinions to yourself. They make you look bad.

Wow. Thanks for your opinion...

Yours was an extremely rude and unnecessary thing to say. Especially since you gave absolutely no reasoning as to why my observation somehow "makes me look bad."

I certainly hope whatever got you into such a bad mood this morning has resolved itself. Have a great day.

How come I'm not surprised

Because you sharply grasp the concept of "marketing", which is in Phils job title for all to see.

Are you comparing the capabilities of OS X to iOS?

Lol

Another person that doesn't get that iOS devices aren't desktop/laptop computers. There's no comparison. That's not because iOS is inherently inferior but because it's aimed at fundamentally different types of usage.

The goal with iOS devices was to fit one category, limited number of tasks, and do those very well. This was rarely ever done by other companies. One comes to mind: Palm.

If anything, iOS has stepped off the path in trying to do a lot more than it was meant to do. That's risky in terms of losing focus and acquiring bloat. Which it has done. Optimization, stabilization, and even feature removal need to be done at this point.

Have your snotty attitude all you want, but face it, spreading the launch over so many countries continues to cause delays in devices being shipped.

Maybe to you.

Incredible. Entitlement monster calling OTHER people snotty for getting told off about his snotty self-focus.

Maybe this has been discussed to death, but I'm still wondering why Apple didn't make wifi+cell available in the 32GB model?

This is a niche product. In order to sell effectively, you make a low range version for the minority of people in that market that want it but can't shell out full cost (by cutting flash storage), then you give the "real" version (with and without cellular) to the regular focus of that market. Overall it's still a smaller market than the other products.

This is the iPad I had hoped they'd build on day 1.

Unfortunately, it is not day 1, and our expectations have had 7 years to develop.

Now it seems a poor mobile device because while the OS is right, it's size is too big, a poor professional creative device because while it's size is right, it only runs iOS, and a poor toy because while it's a novelty, it's as expensive as a full featured notebook or surface pro.

I disagree, the intention of iOS was not to do less, but to do things in a new way that is not restricted by years of cruft from the development of the PC. Managing files is archaic, but managing files on iOS is even more cumbersome when you need to use more than one app to process a file.

The problem is that Apple's solution to a lot of issues isn't fully fleshed out yet. Think about common scenarios like using reading a document while also writing another one (Can only run one instance of Pages.) Or something like video editing, where you have a lot of separate files. Or software development, where again you have a lot of separate files of many different types (source code, images, sounds, storyboard layouts, etc.) Currently Apple is just ignoring those things.

iOS device being called iPad PRO is an oxymoron with how severely limited it is

You don't call something a pro device which doesn't even have a simple file storage

Pretty much - and I don't really think it's right. The iPhone 6S Plus and 6S are even seeing it - albeit to a lesser degree. If you're willing to pay for premium hardware, you shouldn't be forced to make a compromise between premium hardware and screen size. Everybody's needs are different. Just because something has a larger screen doesn't mean it has to be the flagship.
Yeah I am in the camp that thinks that for people would've paid the same price regardless of 10" vs 12" display.... I also think it makes sense to try out new changes on one device not all three at the same time. It complicates things. I think Apple is doing this the right way TBQH. If there are any issues Apple can resolve it with a few people rather than a ton of people.

I feel like this is forcing people to spend $900 that just want a pencil.

We have a 12" retina device. It's called the MacBook.

The MacBook was targeted to graphic designers and people who don't need high end Intel processors.

So now people who bought the MacBook 12" but need to draw, have to buy an iPad Pro.

And people who buy the iPad Pro, that need a full OS, have to buy a MacBook.

They should've just made the MacBook into like a MacBook Pad with optional Pencil and fully convertible with a keyboard "cover" to prevent it from scratching.

We don't need a 12" iOS only device. iOS has enough issues just scaling up to 10". They have it perfect with an iOS device 10" with multi tasking and split screen. Make the pencil an iOS or MacBook capable accessory so people with an iPad can get it or people with a MacBook 12" can get it.
