Personally, I'm psyched for this upgrade. I've owned both the iPad 1 and iPad 2. While I loved both, both needed more speed, higher resolution and a good camera. The 3 has all those things. Dual core processor, quad core graphics chip, high def screen, much better camera... looks like an awesome new feature set to me. I'm not sure why anyone would complain.

Am I the only one who thinks this update just screams "Average"

The 4S update was so much better compared to this update.

I think it's quite an upgrade over the [2]. Just the display alone is a feat of engineering and well worth it. Especially considering that Apple didn't change the price point.

Yes, the iPad costs a lot of money, but you also get a whole lot of functionality and quality to boot.

I ordered the new iPad this afternoon and it will be my very first iPad and I know I am going to love it.

No not 3D.

Siri
Facetime HD cameras
8MP over 5MP
New colour or case
Increased battery to maybe 12 hours?
More memory

Need I go on?

Man you are hard to please. You must be fun at restaurants...lol

Maybe next they will take your advice and include a Nuclear Power Plant to power your whole house...lol

No product can be all things to all people, but we do have the good fortune of freedom of choice to buy, or not to buy.

Since you don't like what you've heard (but obviously haven't seen or tried) why not wait for the fourth or fifth generation?

BTW, I happen to think the camera is a great feature. One I use quite often.

The bit about graphics - no one is forcing developers to use all the pixels, it is up to them to decide. If using the full resolution decreases the performance significantly then they could keep the resolution the same and harness all the extra power to improve graphics another way.

I read through your post, but it was extremely incoherent. It was full of run-on sentences and weird logic that I had to try hard to get what you were trying to say.

Honestly I can't agree with you at all, you seem to not understand what is new, and you also focus far too much on specs, which everyone knows aren't as important as the actual experience of using the device.

You seem to just want to pick apart this upgrade, maybe to justify not purchasing it? I have no idea what your rant is about.

Anyone who went from the iPhone 3G or 3GS to the iPhone 4's retina display will know how big of an update this is. I would have upgraded even if that we the ONLY thing they improved. I've loved my iPad, but the resolution was too low. Not anymore.

I went from the 3gs to the4, and I personally didn't see much of a difference, but thats probably because the IP4 screen is so darn tiny, and because I'm getting older and wear glasses now.

if specs were not important to how the actual experience is then why have we come this far. the reason specs are important is because they lead to a better overall experience. the retina display is completely useless to someone who doesn't understand specs. most people don't even know what a pixel is,

also if they left it at 1024x768 for the extra power what was the pint of the screen

think about it.

they would have called it the iPad 2s but they couldn't because there was no speed increase.

they couldn't call it the iPad 3 because there was no design change.

so what you are left with is an incredibly incremental bump with almost no features except for one

I'm no Apple fanboy. My main dev computer is now a PC. But last year the absolute best thing I bought was my iPad 2, so I'm upgrading. I use this thing every single day, and I'm looking forward to the higher specs. Good thing we all have free will to buy or not buy it.

I want a pony.

Even if people don't understand what a pixel is, or can't understand specs, when they actually use the device in the store, they will instantly be able to tell how much better the display looks, and how much faster the device is.

So no, specs are not important, the experience is the only important thing. It could have amazing specs and the whole experience could be ruined by a stupid issue with the software, or a unknown hardware issue. This is why Apple is an experience driven company, they never talk about specs for very long, and always talk about the experience of using the device.

Basically what you are left doing is trying to be critical of a simple naming scheme, and analyzing bullet point features, when the vast majority of people really only care about one thing: the experience they get when using the device, and if that experience is worth the money. If they already have an iPad, they can compare their old one to the new one, and decide if it's a big deal or not.

But the one thing you should never do, is do what you are doing, which is over-analyzing to the point where people trying to listen to you just get a headache.

I just upgraded from an iPad 1 to an iPad 3 and think it will be a massive improvement.

To get a bigger bang for the buck, why not just upgrade every other release and just by AppleCare + for a full 2 year warranty?

Well so far as of 7:30 EST, the Apple Store is still showing 3/16 availability. I was expecting a sellout by now so it might be a bust, comparatively.

Knowing how you use your iPad (and if I'm not mistaken you currently have an original iPad) I can understand your point of view. I'm guessing that all those PDF's you stare at may be significantly easier on your eyes on the new iPad.

And I don't think many have given Apple sufficient credit for maintaining the iPad's battery life with the new display and faster processor while sacrificing so little in terms of weight and size. That's some seriously good engineering.

As for what I'm waiting for, I can't really say. My iPad 2 serves me so well that I'm really hard put to come up with any earth shaking improvements that would not involve serious penalties in terms of weight or cost. (i.e pressure sensitive screen, e-ink options, etc.) or are simply not going to be allowed by Apple (i.e. greater customization of the user experience, multiple keyboard options, usb connectivity, etc.)

Not every generation of every Apple product is going to be revolutionary, as the iPhone 4S most recently demonstrated. The new iPad had added some incremental value without seriously compromising the excellent features of the iPad 2 at the same price points. That's laudable.

actually, i upgraded to the ipad 2 because the lack of ram in the ipad 1 made everything crash.

the 4s was a great improvement, in my opinion, but i think the camera matters a lot more on the iphone. the new processor is no joke either.

anyhow, like you said, the retina display will make a huge difference for me. i'm surprised that other people aren't as excited about it. i always found ipad 1 and 2 to be a little blurry. after the iphone's retina display, nothing looks good anymore :)

I'm also going from an iPad 1 to a 3. Will be a huge improvement for me. Call it a weak upgrade if you want, but I think you are in the minority. Also, I think they did upgrade the ram to 1 gb.

horrible upgrade ?

Perhaps you should learn how to use the correct words to describe the Upgrade.

Horrible means:

Causing or likely to cause horror; shocking: a horrible massacre.
• Very unpleasant:

The New iPad is not a horrible upgrade for goodness sakes. Your post, however, was just horrible, just horrible I say ! :p

No, I think it's quite the opposite. iPhone 4S only got Siri, a faster processor, and a better camera.

Retina display, Quad Core, and 4G is pretty significant, IMO.

Quad-Core graphics, not processor (Dual-Core) ;)

speaking as a person that just preordered the ipad:

I am VERY disappointed about not having Siri on iPad. But this is what really has me confused/disappointed and maybe a bit angry as a consumer:

Voice dictation requires active internet connection (The engadget post-event show noted that if you turned on the airplane mode on the iPad, the voice dictation button vanishes).

So Apple didn't put voice dictation there because majority of ipad users may be wifi only, Apple made a conscious decision not to include Siri in the new iPad.

Why????? What logical explanation would anyone have to come to such conclusion?

Edit: 1 more complaint. I find it bizarre that Apple would upgrade the rear camera but leaving the front facing camera alone. For iPhone, I understand.. But for iPad? I personally see the front facing camera being used more than the rear facing one..

It will obviously sell, but tell me what features are making you buy it? I agree that upgrading from a 1st to a 3rd would be worth it, but what features are making you upgrade from a 2 to a 3?

Retina Display (#1)
5MB camera with same optics as iPhone 4S (#2)
Quad-core graphics (#3)
Same battery life (#4) (Apple underestimates this at 10 hours. I've heard of many people clocking in at more like 12 hours of real world use).

The screen alone is going to get me to buy one. If the graphics are that much better, then that will be great for a lot of games, etc that people may want ot buy.

My question is, what features could have been added that would have made this feel like a better update to you. Its got some pretty good hardware from what I can see, the rest of the features I want can be provided by software.

A6 chip - iPhone 5 going to be faster?
128gb model
Would be really good if someday they included an SD/USB slot  Starting to fall behind in business when you can't get a document from a USB stick/SD without needing a pc - 'pc less' world here we come...
Not to mention an 'insert one last thing' here. Miss the old 'wow' moments, been pretty disappointing between this and the iPhone 4s, hopefully the redesign for iPhone 5 beings something 'new'.

If you don't play games on the iPad much there isn't a huge upgrade except for the screen...which I agree will tempt a lot of people - but if you can live without this one upgrade then the fourth generation should be a much bigger upgrade, speaking in terms of iPad 2 to new iPad, iPad 1 to new iPad is a massive upgrade.
For the uk at least, 4g....can hardly get edge/3g, what good would 4g do.

And then there's the camera. Upgrade the front one for FaceTime if you must, but the practicality of using the iPad as a decent camera is ridiculous, will be easier and better quality to use a proper camera or even the iPhone 4s.
