If Steve Jobs were here I’m almost sure that’s what we would have. Steve didn’t sacrifice design for function, it isn’t hyperbole to say that he’d never release the design of the 11. Because he would not! Just look at it, no, a square bump added to the corner like that would never fly with his eye and focus towards clean premium design. This looks like a cheap afterthought and a way to save money by keeping the housing relatively unchanged.

Nobody knows what he would have done. Many of the old SJ phones haven’t aged that well IMHO - that happens as new versions get released.

My guess is that in time people will get used to these and then complain about next years redesign.

Can someone / anyone confirm that the Telephoto Camera's image sensor is the exact same, & has the exact same sized pixels (1.0um), as ALL previous iPhone Telephoto Cameras, going ALL the way back to the first, in the 2016 iPhone 7+ ???

same drama every year :) people talk **** about the new design but they all going to buy soon lol you don’t like the design ? f...u all the haters create your own then .Stop cry like a little girl we all know you can’t stop your self to get 1

Let’s face it: the design probably won’t win any awards. But the pictures and videos the phone takes just might.

Apple is often criticized for their form over function approach. The iPhone 11 Pro is the opposite: function over form. And that’s a good thing. I couldn’t care less what my camera lens looks like while I’m taking pictures.

Frankly, for me personally this phone will mean the end of my DSLR. As the saying goes in photography: the best camera is the one you have with you. I’ll be selling my equipment that I’ve only been using occasionally over the last few years as it’s heavy. Does the iPhone produce better quality images from a pixel-peeper perspective: probably not. I don’t care. The resolution is good enough. The AI and processing power runs circles around most DSLR and mirrorless cameras. And I have the iPhone with me all the time.

The shots they showcased during the keynote were done by professionals. If anything it shows that composition matters way more than the hardware.

Except the bump won't disappear this year. The bump is now 2 tiers. There is a bump for the camera housing and then the lenses protrude from the camera housing. Meaning the Apple leather case will be flush with the housing bump but then the lenses will protrude beyond that. If you lay the phone on the table with an Apple leather case, it will no longer sit flat on the table.

I don't see any other way except to make a much thicker case. With the thin leather case, if they made the case level with the camera lens, then there would be a gap between the case and the housing bump, right?
The housing bump seems to be way smaller than last year and the lenses seem to be the same height as last year.

no way does apple release a case and it not sit flat on the table in it.

I was actually going to say the same thing. I pretty much never look at the back - who cares what it looks like?

I am much more focused on battery life, screen, notch, RAM, Qualcomm vs Intel etc.

I think Apple delivered a great set of phones. Wish they would have killed the notch and added Qualcomm but they aren’t deal breakers (QC may be if the Intel modems aren’t improved).

Right? I also kinda like the 3 camera setup. Looks like a vintage 1960’s camera. Filming from all 3 at the same time is off the charts. The creativity that sort of feature will unleash is pretty astounding given there is nothing else like that on the market right now.

I think it looks fine (I actually like it too) and fine it funny that this is what people and reviews are focused on.

The functionality is pretty phenomenal.

I haven’t seen anything about the weight of the phones / how they feel compared to the XS/Max. Are they heavier with the new batteries or pretty much the same?

This has always been the case - having a good eye and some talent is always way more important. The quality of the cameras help though as does the processing.

What I really don't understand...

...if there is a necessity to use that much space for the lenses then why the hell not drop the whole thin fetish? Why not make the device those 2mm thicker and use the created space on the inside for something else (and be it only battery space)?

I miss the old days of clean design language and just keep on wondering what went wrong in Ive's development that he went from stellar to a "form over function" guy.

That’s exactly right. I’ve worked as a photographer for 25 years. I still use middle format cameras, but for travel I’m done carrying tons of gear after this

Maybe I'm wrong. I've never had the opportunity to use a DSLR or other very high-end camera equipment.

For me, 85-90% true.

For studio work you’ll want a professional camera and high quality lenses. But honestly, I take my best shots when I’m on the go and just see something that catches my eye. And for that, the iPhone has been a godsend. And the new Pros dramatically improve on that.

i have some Nikon gear, both a DSLR and a Z6, but I’ve been reluctant to lug these around on a daily basis

At this point, you need to know is that the customer will never able to buy latest and newer iPhone model that looks amazing without 3 big hideous lenses and toxicity of notch screen that represent  flagship product.

Lol - but in all fairness, some of the very much affordable clip on lenses are excellent

I think the whole narrative of actual professional video creators using this toy as their go to camera was genuinely rediculous. Ok, let's toss out the RED camera and use an
iPhone instead.

Should hear what Linus has to say about Red.

90% of iPhone user is not professional photographers and it doesn’t makes sense to add so many lenses and it’s way of trying to intentionally make the device looks ugly.

We all need to accept that they stopped trying and move on with our lives.

What? They need to remove from its job role with such uncanny ability of stupidity.

As I mentioned in a previous comment, camera bumps on top of camera bumps and I am done. The main thing I wanted from the camera upgrades was more zoom and more megapixels.

When zooming in on the average photo taken on an XS Max, the quality is really embarrassing, and faces lose all sort of definition beyond 15-20m. The Pro Max is so fugly that with the relative lack of advancement on the telephoto side, I don’t see it working for me.

That is my thought too. What interests me is the new camera features and the improved battery life
Unfortunately a lot of people here—interestingly enough mostly those in the Apple-hate crowd, not actual Apple customers lol—prefer form over function :( They simply don’t understand Apple.

The notch and the camera bump are “necessary evils”. If Ive had his way, the iPhone would have neither. But style, looks and overall design form must be flexible to accommodate the engineering realities.

Apple is willing to accept the trade offs of camera bump vs. flush lenses (and full-width bezel vs. notch) in order to optimize the entire package.

"Is there nothing that Apple won't copy from Samsung? Android phones had 3 cameras first, and now Apple decides they want 3 cameras? A bunch of hypocrites."

"That chin though. And the bezels? No thanks. I'll pass."

It's funny that we never see these non-arguments when Apple follows general tech trends even though they are infamously known for watching the market and perfecting already existing tech and designs. Steve Jobs even said it himself. I like tech in general and love seeing tech advance. I've used both Apple and Android over the past 10 years and it's amazing how people still fight over the same opinions. It's incredible how this is going to be the 5th and 6th generation of the same exact design and people are still like, "Oh, it looks better than the renders. Not bad." At the same time, the same people are tearing apart the design of the Galaxy line.

Still no USB-C. Extremely ugly camera array design. 64GB starting storage capacity. "Faster" charging but adaptor not included in the box. Come on, Apple and Apple fans...how are we still justifying these prices? One comment that I saw here put it perfectly:

"Apple is renovating, not innovating."

Holy cow! I didn't even notice until I read your post! Bump upon bump! That IS ugly as hell!

I seriously can’t get over how ugly the three separate camera lenses are within the huge camera bump is. I understand that it is completely subjective and purely just my opinion but I think it’s by far the ugliest iPhone they’ve ever released.

No you've got it wrong. It was android that copied Apple. They heard that Apple were going to have a wide angle lens so rushed to put their version out first.

In reality I don't think android own the triple lens. It's a decent upgrade from Apple but nothing ground breaking. However the industry is at a plateau now so there isn't much to see at the moment.

What if the cameras were flush and we had a battery that couldn’t be exhausted in a weekend...
Well, we’d have a seriously thick, much heavier, more expensive iPhone that most people would still plug in every night.

The 10% who need the extra battery life can get a battery case. Apple’s not going to make the other 90% carry a thick, heavy phone just so you and a small minority can get closer to your perfect iPhone, while making it worse for the overwhelming majority.

Though they’ve been getting thicker and heavier since the iPhone 6, customers don’t want too thick and too heavy. The Apple-hate crowd might blame Ive, but Apple’s just giving (most) customers what they want. They know they can’t make 100% happy, however they’ll gladly settle for 80-90%. But yeah, sucks if you’re in that 10-20% minority :(
