I guess, "thank you, Samsung" is in order?

Partially.

The real "thank you" should be to Apple for individually calibrating the screens on every iPhone and for actually having a color management system that works (unlike Android, which has a garbage implementation of color management).

Android devices can't even proeprly render content from more than one color space on the screen at the same time. Pathetic.

There is absolutely no evidence that Apple design the screens. They might be designing display controllers but not the screens. Don't you remember the time when Apple double sourced LCD panels from LG and Samsung and everyone wanted a Samsung panel because they were better? If Apple designed those screens, would not they be identical?
There’s absolutely no evidence they don’t design the screens either. Remember the 6s? TMSC vs Samsung controller. “Nobody” wanted a Samsung controller.
Apple is just one of Samsung's customer. They send their requirement and budget to Samsung. And Samsung design and manufacture certain screens for apple.

If you consider a piece of requirement sheet as screen designing. Then anyone is more than capable to design the best screen in the world, such as 8k resolution, 10k+ nits brightness, 0 watt/ hour battery consumption, manufacturing cost < $10 per piece and etc.
You have proof of this toilet paper pass the requirements? Obviously everyone’s take is different, but I dont believe Apple is as passive as some people think as they like to control everything.

What exactly did Apple design here? Resolution and size.

Everything, really. It is a custom OLED. The display driver, which is like a cpu controlling the screen and its brightness (yes, with OLEDs it’s all about power management to achieve brightness peaks), subpixel structure, all the layers, the calibration tools, the sensors that adjust it, the software that controls it.... this is why Samsung phones have different screens than iPhones, even though they are made in same factories.

Apple made and designed the screen. Samsung manufactured it in their factories. They didn’t design it.

I do not know about all Android fans but I am pretty sure Samsung customers are always confident that they get the best tech available.

You must be new to displaymate reviews. They give the same review to every new Samsung display (be it for Galaxy or Apple phone). Here are the excerpts from their review for Galaxy S10 display.

Even with our new tougher grading standards and new tests, the Galaxy S10 receives 100% All Green Very Good to Excellent Ratings in All Categories, earning DisplayMate’s highest ever A+ grade.

Some of the Galaxy S10 Display Highlights
These are a few of the Galaxy S10 Display Highlights that we will be covering in detail throughout the article:
· Record Very High Absolute Color Accuracy (0.4 JNCD) that is Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect.
· Record Very High Image Contrast Accuracy and Intensity Scale Accuracy that is Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect.
· Record High Brightness Mode that is up to 17% Brighter (1,215 nits) than the Galaxy S9 in High Ambient Light.
· Record Peak Luminance, Color Accuracy and Intensity Scales that are Independent of the on-screen image content.
· Record Small Shifts in Brightness and Color with Viewing Angle, particularly White, which is the most used background color.
· Record Setting Galaxy S10 matches or sets over a dozen new Smartphone Display Performance Records, earning DisplayMate’s highest ever A+ grade.
· Highlights: The Highlights and Performance Results section below has detailed information and analysis on the Galaxy S10 display.
· Features: The Display Performance Functions and Features section lists all of the major functions and features.
· Records: The Display Performance Records section lists the Lab Measurement performance records.
· Data: The Display Shoot-Out Lab Measurements Comparison Table has all of the detailed measurements and test details.
· Conclusions: You can also go directly to the Galaxy S10 Conclusions section which summarizes all of the Features, Functions and Results.

And that's what they said about Note 10+ display:

The Galaxy Note10+ has a very impressive Top Tier Smartphone Display with close to Text Book Perfect Calibration Accuracy and Performance that is Visually Indistinguishable From Perfect. Based on our extensive Lab Tests and Measurements the Galaxy Note10+ receives a DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award earning DisplayMate’s highest ever Display Performance Grade of A+ and setting or matching over 13 Smartphone Display Performance Records.

And all of that is destroyed by Androids absolutely garbage version of color management.

It's like having an audiophile home stereo system with $20K speakers and using it to listen to 64kbps MP3's. Doesn't matter how good the output device is if it's being fed garbage.

So apple suddenly becomes a hand holder OLED display technology expert and confidently interrupts Samsung production ? even though Samsung have dominated OLED market for years, and no other company beside Samsung, is competent to produce such high quality OLED screen in reasonable cost ? Which display patent in practical use was introduced by Apple ?

Apple doesn't "make" any of it. Apple has zero manufacturing capability for OLED panels.

They spec'd a display and Samsung developed the tech to manufacture it.

Industry reports also disagree with your assertion.

iPhone OLED panels use Samsung's Y-OCTA design right down to the pixel arrangement and integrated touch built into the panel. No need for a secondary touch layer.
This is all Samsung's tech and design, not Apple's.

Source- Samsung supplies all-in-one flexible OLED to Apple Achievement of original technology 'Yi Octa'
(Translated content)

"Samsung Display supplies touch-integrated flexible (OLED) panels to Apple iPhone . It is a Samsung style OLED called 'Y-OCTA'. This is the first time Apple has applied a touch-integrated display to the iPhone. The application of a touch-integrated OLED is expected to bring thinner and lighter iPhone. It is also noteworthy that Samsung Display has finally surpassed the demanding standards of Apple and finally completed the supply of Wyocta Panel.

According to the industry on the 12th, Apple decided to apply a touch-integrated flexible OLED panel to the new iPhone and commissioned Samsung Display to develop and manufacture it. Samsung Display has recently entered into the development of related parts and materials to form touch-integrated OLED displays with partners. As the development project has begun, touch-integrated OLEDs will be applied to the iPhone as long as there is no change."

"The reason Samsung Display made Apple move is due to technology. The core of Samsung Touch integrated OLED technology 'Wi Octa' is the integration of touch functions into the display. The touch function is implemented during panel production. The need for a separate TSP makes the display lighter and thinner. Cost is also reduced. Samsung is also known to have developed a new touch sensor pattern in consideration of Apple, which considers touch as important."

On the other hand, Apple just takes a part off the lot? Apple has noexperience with what it wants in display tech just goes strolling around to see what’s out there?

You are confusing Foxconn which is an outsource manufacturer with Samsung which is an OEM. Another OEM that Apple are using is Sony. Are you going to claim that Apple are designing camera sensors and Sony just manufactures them?

No they wouldn’t be and the difference between displays can’t be explained just by software or calibration.

it's ok for an USD 1900 phone (price for iPhone 11 Pro 256 GB with Apple Care in Europe)

That's a gorilla glass situation all over again. Apple refusing to admit that they are using vanilla gorilla glass just like everyone else even though everyone knows that they do.

Maybe. Have any proof either way?

Yes. They do it with many components. Nothing wrong with that.
But maybe not displays.

They stopped using Corning's "off-the-shelve" Gorilla Glass with the 6s, IIRC. The custom glass they use is still made and (co-)developed by Corning though.

You might be right about the glass, but display is a tiny bit more complicated than glass.
