What does that have to do with anything?

It’s the same old tired argument all over again. People like to make a laundry list of all the features that a competing android phone has and use it as a reason why the iphone is supposedly falling behind or how Apple is trying to con me. Until you realise that many of the features in said android phone aren’t as polished, or are gimmicks that don’t see much use.

Here in Singapore, anyone who preorders the Note 10 will get a free upgrade to 512 gb of storage plus some freebies. For someone who is in the market for such a phone, good for them. But you know what? It’s still not going to tempt me to switch over, because for all the spec boosts, it’s still the same Samsung phone under the hood.

I am not going to get the same integration with my other Apple products, or the app selection, or the support. I won’t be able to airdrop files to my iPad and vice versa, or mirror it to my Apple TV, to share app purchases, and so on.

Apple products have never been cheap, I acknowledge that, and I willingly pay the “Apple Tax”, because I know that this premium will eventually pay for itself in the form of improved productivity and fewer problems overall.
Why would you need to airdrop a file to your iPad if you’re logged into the same iCloud account anyway?

Why would you need to airdrop a file to your iPad if you’re logged into the same iCloud account anyway?

Because at work, my iPhone and iPad are on cellular and I don’t wish to burn my own data syncing them over using iCloud Photo Library.

Just recently, I was preparing a video for my school’s national day celebrations. My colleague and I went about filming our students using our iPhones, then we airdropped all the footage onto my iPad where I edited them using lumafusion.

Airdrop just doesn’t get enough credit. Sure, it doesn’t work with android phones, but if you are able to set it up such that your collaborators are using iPhones, it’s so convenient to be able to fling photos around. My colleague was able to transfer like 145 photos to me in this manner in seconds. Contrast with WhatsApp which compressed the photos to heck. And the effort I have put in towards promoting this feature had paid off, as my colleagues are starting to become more cognisant of this feature and are now using it more extensively.

Another reason for being all-in on the Apple ecosystem - the ability to share app purchases between my iOS devices. An app I purchase for my iPhone will be available on my iPad and vice versa.

Since I use an Apple TV to mirror my iPad in the classroom, it’s handy to be able to extend this benefit to my iPhone (have used it to airplay footage I took of my students, or even shown them data from my health app as a talking point for science).

Then there’s the Apple Watch and Airpods, which I feel pretty much speak for themselves.

I guess I could replicate my setup on android if I tried hard enough, but I currently have a system going with my Apple devices, and I see little point in mucking it up over benefits which are negligible to my use case.

Especially now with ios 13 right around the corner, bringing Apple Arcade and additional productivity features to the iPad.

No one said to Apple, "Show us what you can do at higher price brackets.” We want more technology at lower prices. If you want more you should be able to pay less. This is the problem with capitalism. If you have more money, you can afford nicer things and companies like Apple and Sony and Ford and Shark and Sonos are happy to have higher priced items with more features—but you need money. Corrupt.

The only difference between iPhones should be SCREEN SIZE. NOT TECHNOLOGY. GET IT, APPLE???

The problem with capitalism? Thats a feature. You think everything should be free? Any idea where money to create these things comes from?

100% guarantee it won’t have 5G compatibility. Intel, their modem supplier couldn’t build a 5G modem and they were in a legal battle with Qualcomm until very recently, way too late for Apple to put their modems into this years phone.

The dummy models floating about have been spot on for the design about the last 5-6 years running. Not a guarantee but Apple is a very predictable company these days.

As for pricing they will either freeze them at last years prices or go up. They don’t want to lower the prices but they can’t really increase it either because they know sales will fall further. So freezing them is a middle ground.

I am personally hoping sales tank this year. Pricing on all their products is getting out of hand now. Top end, best of the best iPhone should be £1000 maximum. Apple bumping up prices is making other manufacturers like Samsung etc bump their prices up as well. However even with their price increases their products are still considerably cheaper than Apples. Design wise they are starting to outdo Apple.

I agree with pretty much everything you said here, except for the last sentences*. To me it still seems weird, that the camera bump + charging capability is everything we get this year. That seems very lazy, even for Apple. But this is all speculation. IF this turns out to be true, then I'll agree with everything what's being said in this forums.

However, as of right now, I personally think that most of the product decisions Apple has made most recently are actually very good. Both hardware and software wise. I remember one year ago, I was smashing my iPhone against the ground because it was so bugged, I couldnt even reliably take a call. But since then, it really has been a rapid climb back up. So they have my fair bit of trust on this one (also: my iPhone SE is basically running out of lifetime, so its not as if I have much of a choice).

*My personal opinion: Apple still is years ahead design wise, they just know how to build good controversy. Like the notch. And the next one will be this camera square, which is barely at the limit of being disgusting, but yet, in the most recent renders here just strikes the balance of beauty. People will talk about it, some people will hate it, yet most will buy and desire it (if not now then in 2020) and it will grow the brand recognition/strength even further. Apples designers are masters at this, which is what makes them so good.

Apple is widely expected to release three new iPhones in the fall, and an anonymous Twitter account with a proven track record has suggested that at least one of the models will have "Pro" in its name, such as "iPhone 11 Pro."

The tweet comes from a mystery account named CoinX, which has accurately leaked several details about upcoming Apple products over the past year, including the names of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR before anyone else, the removal of the headphone jack on 2018 iPad Pro models, and much more.

CoinX's accurate leak about the 2018 iPhone names:

In this case, CoinX phrases the tweet as a rhetorical question, but the account has a perfect track record so far with all of its leaks:

For what it's worth, MacRumors received the following anonymous tip on August 4: "The square camera iPhone will be called the iPhone 11 Pro. This is fact." It would be a disservice to our readers to simply pass along any unsubstantiated tip we receive, but it is now worth mentioning in light of this tweet.

This could mean the 2019 lineup will include the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, and perhaps the iPhone 11R, but we still don't know for sure.

Apple is widely expected to unveil three new iPhones next month, including two higher-end 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch OLED models and one lower-end 6.1-inch LCD model. Rumored features include triple-lens rear cameras on the higher-end models, larger batteries, two-way charging of AirPods, and much more.

People like to have their purchases justified by Apple. "I want the Pro!" is all customers will say. Because marketing (i.e: 'pro' moniker) will convince people they're getting the superior device for their needs. Most people will never touch the sides of the features they've paid for. That's what happens with the MBP. "It SaYs PrO sO I WaNt ThAt OnE cOs Im a PrO!"

Couldn't agree more. Apple are currently taking advantage of their customers. I believe this won't stop this year or next though. Apple think they're superior so they'll expect you to pay for the privilege of using their products.

Pen that's a part of the phone?
Messaging app where you can actually schedule a message to be sent out at a specific time at a specific date.
I used that all the time when I had my Samsung because of work related texts.
Multitasking is at least 10x easier on the Samsung.
Back button that always works the same way (would be nice if swiping from the left of the screen on the iPhone always went backwards but it's very app dependent even in the iPhone apps).
Menu button that always bring up the sub-menus.
Notifications that work much better and make your life, as a pro, much easier.
Notifications on the iPhone are simply ridiculous.
LED for notifications as well. Would be nice to have that blinking light when you have a notification waiting.
But Samsung takes it further and you can customize how many times the light will blink or have it not blink at all.
Plus different color LED for different apps.
Easy way to genuinely turn off and on the WIFI (not just delay it for a day) instead of having to go to settings. It's all up there in the notification center.
The list goes on and on as to why the Samsung Note is much closer to be a "pro" phone than the iphone is.

Yes, because I'm tired of Google hearing all my conversations, scanning my emails and texts and knowing every keyboard stroke I make.

That's why.

Has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

Obviously everybody uses their phones differently but scheduling a message at a certain point of time is suppose to be anything more than a gimmick? If anything that shows how lazy the world is today that they can’t even write a simple message by themselves.

Multitasking is better on samsung with spilt screen but thats not a point i disagreed with as i highlighted above. That said many may not have the need on an iPhone. The key multitasking on the note is there on the iPad for the most part which can be used better on a bigger device.

Swiping left works very well to go back on the iPhone not found any app where it doesn’t work well. Gestures on the Samsung is not at the level of the iPhone which is why i stuck with onscreen buttons.

I fail to see how notifications are better on android personally. They are still all cluttered together at least on the iPhone you can collapse the notifications so they aren’t in your face consistently when you want to see your notifications. Would rather have them grouped so the notifications don’t take up so much space. On android notifications just seem like a mess to me.

As for the LED notifications last time i checked they got rid of that when the punch hole arrived so thats not even a feature anymore and even when it was there i never saw the benefit of it. If you got loads of notifications then it was rather pointless. People who get loads of notifications would just have an Apple Watch anyway which is as close to a mini iPhone as you can get.

So I fail to see how the list goes on that makes the note more pro. Most of the new S pen features in the note 10 are just other ways to use your camera and make pets come to life...not exactly features for a professional.

It’s a phone so you won’t be able to do anything truly professional on either.

Note 10 is a great phone but for me there are more draw backs leaving the iPhone to go to a samsung. I learnt that the hard way when I switched to the S10 plus.

On iPads they claimed Pro means USB

Apple are a joke
tbh the pencil and usb does make it pro compared to the entry level.

arguably no laptop is PRO compared to a workstation.
and no workstation is PRO compared to a supercomputer if you do some wierdass space simulation.
its just a moniker, get over it
Pro = productivity.

Not professional.
since when

Yes! And Apple's usage of "Pro" speaks to "Productivity."

Suggesting that products with that label have features that are useful for enhancing productivity; ie better displays, pencil/stylus support, performance, ports, etc.

What's funny is so many people here latching on to the idea that it means "professional." I think that has something to do with many romanticizing what a "professional" does.
i think it has something to do with how apple used the moniker... last year.

you know. iMac Pro - "ready for pro users" (quote from apple site)
Logic Pro - professional as opposed to Logic Express
Final Cut Pro
MacBook Pro (as opposed to MacBook)
Mac Pro

because "Pro" has since forever meant Professional, and nobody uses Pro as a "Productivity" moniker - especially Apple.
absolutely nobody ever thought Pro is for Productivity.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with an iPhone having a Pro moniker anyway. It has more options aimed at professionals for fieldwork, it's 100% legit. More legit than thinking it means Productivity anyway

But how are these not the same things? If you're not productive you're 0% effective within your professional life. And productivity can take different forms and shapes in professional life. In the context of the phone, it can be as simple as writing mails, which in some jobs defines up to 100% of your responsibilities (namely communication).

absolutely.

but abbreviation Pro is used for "Professional" in common context and in all other apple context. Assuming it suddenly means "productivity" is a stretch

Very cool - if it's name is "Pro" it has to have an USB-C port like the iPad Pro. Anything else doesn't make sense. The only bad thing is that it will cost more than the iPad Pro ...

Well I guess they have to move away from the Max moniker ....after the 737 fiasco ;)....

Or, sticks pro, raise the price and let them buy it!

If, and only if, it has a file system like the iPad OS, then it should be called iPhone Pro. Up until then, it's just a regular iPhone, no matter what they call it.

Samsung upped them with 4 cameras at the rear this year on the flagship Note model.

Bit of a joke to put so many cameras in a phone, but to each their own (not trying to diss Samsung fyi, generally speaking) - I think the whole number-of-cameras "war" that started a few years ago is ...
