There is something going on with the quality of the coating/glass of these new iPhones.

I got my iPhone 11 Pro on Friday. It's still in the box. For the first time ever with iPhone, I'm waiting for a screen protector before unboxing.

This is written on my year and a half old iPhone X. It's been naked all the time, and there's not a single scratch on the screen. I'm careful with my phones.

The increasing reports of poor scratch resistance of the new iPhones convinced me to get a screen protector – and I hate screen protectors. They change how the phone feels.

Judging by the reports in the media, and the ever-growing discussion at Apple forum, I'd say we have a legitimate Scratch Gate this year.

Thanks for sharing your Gate experience. I actually wonder Apple has "stolen" another few bucks by deceasing the screen durability quality in each new iPhone.

You have pointed out another important issue, the phone is designed to control without any screen protector at all. Having a screen protector destroys the best control experience and feeling.

My iPhone X scratched the very first day I had it; within the first 2-3 months, the screen was covered with hairline scratches that I could feel with my fingertips (so, not simply scratches in the oleophobic coating, as people on the boards here love to say) ... Every single previous iPhone that I owned (3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5S, 6, then 6 Plus, 6S Plus, and 7 Plus) was fine, being treated in exactly the same way, carried by themselves in the same pockets, etc.

Needless to say, I wasn't expecting much from my iPhone 11 Pro Max.

In the nearly one month since I got it, it's been to three countries, through five airports, to the park 4-5 times, all caseless and screen protector-less. The glass is still pristine - if you examine it very carefully in direct sun, with the screen off, you can find one 5-6mm hairline scratch that can't be felt or seen in any other light - THAT scratch is in the oleophobic coating. But yeah - this phone's glass is FAR, FAR more durable than the X's was, in my experience. There's no comparison.

The linked Note 10+ discussion of scratches only has 2 pages of discussion and that phone uses the exact same Corning Gorilla Glass 6 glass as the iPhone 11. Seems like this wouldn't be isolated to iPhone and yet it is. Either way, the media "reports" are referencing this same exact Apple forum discussion thread.

You referenced your iPhone X. Here is a story about the iPhone X's scratchgate:
https://gizmodo.com/iphone-x-damage-report-two-months-later-1822644663

Complains about how easily his iPhone X scratches. He talks about "countless threads on Reddit" having the exact same problem. Sound familiar? And yet you have a unscratched, naked year and a half old iPhone X?

Ugh, just because some of you are not experiecing it doesn’t mean is not happening. Unfortunately this is happening to me, within 24 hours of very careful usage i noticed deep scratches on my 11 pro max and i know for sure I didn’t put it with anything that would scratch the screen like keys. So disappointing. I made an appointment with apple to see what they say.

Every year (and it’s worth remembering, not exclusive to Apple devices) there’s reports of how easily scratched the screens, and/or, backs of devices are.

Personally, I’ve never experienced this problem to any great degree. Sure, after a yet or two of use there’s a few micro-scratches, totally unavoidable unless you’re all cased and screen protector safe.

But, as I often say, no-one should base any decision on what they read in forums/Reddit/Facebook/Twitter and so on. For one simple reason, people like to have a bloody good moan about things.

It’s an undeniable fact that you will always hear significantly more complaints about any product, from any company, than you will the good things.

Simply because, if you’ve nothing to complain about, you're less likely to go to one of these places and say, ‘Hey, I got the new iPhone and there’s nothing wrong with it’. Just count, if you could ever be bothered, the number of posts/threads of people complaining about something, for any product you like, and you’ll find that the complaining posts far and away outnumber anything else. It’s just human nature.

If I based my purchasing decisions on the feedback I read on the internet, I’d never buy anything. There comes a point when you just have to accept that problems with any product are an absolute possibility - no-one can achieve a 0% failure rate.

So, there’s always going to be faults, there’s always going to be minor issues and there’s always going to be people who are perfectly happy with their purchases.

Take some solace in the fact that while the number of complaints you’ll read about far outnumber the non-complainers, the people who are happy enough with their purchase actually significantly outnumber them, just look at the sales figures. If people weren’t happy, they wouldn’t buy them, they wouldn’t upgrade to newer models.

At the end of the day, buy from someone with a good returns policy. If you’re not happy, take it back, no harm done.

Jeeeezzzz, I waffle on when my meds kick in :D

WHY YOUR BRAND-NEW SMARTPHONE WILL SCRATCH JUST AS EASILY AS YOUR OLD ONE

"However, the company has stated hard statistics in the past: according to the Tumble test from a few years ago, which tests the glass after a “random purse tumble” for 15 minutes, the surface area of Gorilla Glass 3 came away 0.52 percent damaged while the surface areas of Gorilla Glass 4 and 5 were both 0.39 percent damaged, indicating an improvement. Corning also confirmed to The Verge that the number remains the same for Gorilla Glass 6, meaning the last two generations have made zero improvements in this department.

In certain tests by Corning, the newest generation of Gorilla Glass even looks more scratched up than an older one. In particular, Gorilla Glass 6 looks worse than 5 when looking at this year’s product sheet for a test that simulates having coins next to the screen."

Phones are becoming more resistant to shattering from drops but no improvements to scratch resistance. Actually slightly worse from GG 5 to GG 6 in "certain tests".

GG 6 is used Apple, Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Asus, Sony, Xaomi, and presumably others.

Wow. This forum is always rabid in defence of the product and swift to attack the user. Be it antenna issues, yellow displays, bending ipads or screen scratches. Just maybe a mass produced set of products could have bad batches. The "Friday afternoon" build.

Your dealing with hundreds of parts, different suppliers, thousands of workers, multiple factories. When there's so many variations of screen quality on iPhones, ipads, macbook etc who's to say there isn't varying quality of glass being supplied.

Not enough details here. Do you carry the phone in your pocket? Where is the scratch located specifically? You just now noticed the scratch ‘sitting at your desk’ or maybe it happened earlier and you didn’t notice it?

I totally understand people cannot accept they spend some money buying a phone with
Scratch Gate, then saying it doesn't not exist would make them feel much better
I totally understand people that cannot accept facts but would rather throw out unfounded garbage just because it makes them feel much better.

Do you even own an iPhone?

I am sure you wash & wax that Benz of yours to protect its beauty? How about oil changes....for goodness sake's, a car that expensive should never need an oil change.

I have put screen protectors on all my iPhones and they look pristine when I've traded or sold them. Screen protectors and cases are there for not just scratches but for protection when/if you drop the phone. I have ceramic tile throughout my house, I've dropped my iPhones as has my wife. Never have we sustained screen or phone damage.

For me it is cheap, but I don't want to buy something that is not designed well and I need to buy another stuff to put on it to protect it.
Scratch....gate?
WTF is going on here?

Not sure what your Benz is made of but both of my wife's developed quite a few scratches. GLS550, gets scratches, AMG GT, gets scratches. The GT got a rock chip in the windshield that spidered over 8 inches at 8,000 miles.
She just paid $1500 for 3 bar stools. They get scratched...and come with a marker to cover the scratches when it happens because. It happens.

You may be having unrealistic expectations. May not but, scratches will happen.

Surely the question should be: does the new iPhone 11 series scratch more easily?

Never use the word "gate" on these forums. It weakens your point and triggers many.

Shouldn't the question be: does Gorilla Glass 6 scratch more easily? And if it does, why are we not seeing a rise of complaints across the entire of smart phone industry from consumers whose phones use the exact same GG 6 as iPhone 11 series?

Unless the point was to trigger many...

Can you be certain Apple hasn't made a change to the glass? For example I've read the displays for 11 Pro are the Samsung Note 10 screens but Apple has tweaked them to their specifications.

I have never had any screen protectors on my iPhone I have owned - just do not like the 'feel' of them. Fortunately, I've yet to encounter any scratches. I've been left quite impressed by the glass coating. Then again, I always place my handset into an empty pocket, not one full of coins or keys!

I'm not certain of anything. Where did you read that iPhone 11 Pro has "tweaked" GG? I've seen nothing that indicates that the GG 6 is any different from other phones?

Looks like many here are missing the point. I have never had to use screen protector for scratches, ever. For cracks? Yes, not for scratches. You can go ahead and look at my post history, I have said more than once I rock my iPhones naked. Never have i had scratchs like this on any iphone before and so fast There is obviously something different with these iPhones. Stop telling us we MUST use a screen protector for this. Happy that works for you but not the case for every one. For once just try to understand that not everyone’s experience will be the same.

What's the difference in using a screen protector for cracks versus scratches? Either way it protects the screen. You have used a screen protector before and this time you didn't and now you have scratches.

This guy.

AppleCare: yes.

I typically use all my iPhones naked.

I always remove them after a few days. I hate the feeling of them and cases.

I see you edited your post.

I have used screen protectors and remove them within a week. Hate the feeling of them. I have never had these scratches with any iPhone.

I did edit my post. Hard to keep track of your point as one minute you are saying you use SP to guard against cracks and next you don't use them at all and then you only use them a week.
