I used to mock overly big android phones and i will do the exact same with the iphone 12 pro max...

My Phone should fit my pocket and not require me to carry a purse or something...

Pro is the maximum I can go for and even that feels hard to use from time to time...

Man - these reviewers are really going (faux) crazy over the size of this phone. It's only 2.4mm longer than the previous Plus phones.
For those of you who can do math, that's 1.2mm longer on each end.

Computational photography is something Apple has nailed pretty well, and continues to make great strides.

I seriously wonder what could be done with a full size lens and a reasonable sensor size - things that could never get put into a phone-sized device.

In a lot of ways, Apple gets you the photos you want, while the DSLR cameras on the market today get you the picture you asked for.

I am not sure what you are saying here... the photos you want versus the photos you asked for? say what?

I agree computational photography has come a long long way and is pretty amazing. But if you are trying to argue that a full size mirrorless camera does not offer much more.. going to have to disagree. Took a trip last year to Tokyo carrying my 11 pro max and Sony AR-IV... took a lot of pictures and yes got some amazing shots with the 11 pro max that I may not have gotten with my Sony AR-IV (mostly because of convenience). BUT in a collection of pictures it was very easy to pick out the ones I did with the full size camera versus the iPhone. There was more detail in the full size, more dynamic range, and the boca was just better, no missed areas. That's just the physics of the size of the glass and sensor.

I know this was a side topic, but as the other person said, I would love for Apple to take over Sony's UI and computational side to give us a real full size Apple Camera. I think you are saying that too?

I am looking forward to putting the 12 pro max through its paces. I chuckle at folks saying it's too big as if that was something new, I doubt I will notice the difference versus the 11 pro max. And yep, thats too big for some, just fine for others.

Clearly the iPad mini is redundant. But Is the iPhone 12 Pro Max SO big that it should have iPadOS on it?
It's not THAT big. The screen ratio being what it is makes the phone feel a lot smaller than the iPad mini, which of course it physically is, just compare the two of them side by side. I have the 11 Pro Max and an iPad mini and the Pro Max feels like a large iPhone, that's all. The larger screen of the mini is better, IMO, for things like reading, writing, browsing, all those things that larger (and wider) screens are good for. Unfortunately, the iPad's screen ratio makes it less optimal for watching widescreen video though. Now if Apple went and introduced a side by side view for the phone in landscape mode, I might give it a try to see how useful it might be.

I really don't like the naming convention of these. iPhone Twelve Pro Max.

Reminds me of Microsoft naming schemes like Windows Phone Seven Series and Xbox Series X.

I almost wish Apple would use the Mac and iPad conventions for iPhone.

EDIT: Actually, I wish Apple would fix the iPad names too: iPad Pro, iPad, iPad SE, iPad mini (get rid of "Air")... Sorry to derail the thread a bit but it's been bugging me ;)

What are the big differences (if any) between the Pro and Pro Max cameras?

I’ve never been interested in “phablet” phones and the Pro Max is too big for me. I have my iPad Pro 11” for tablet use. I’ve always gone with the top line iPhone but stopped at the Pro models due to size. Even the mini is tempting me as I miss the older size.

I'd like to see a photo of an iPad mini and this 6.7" phone side by side.
I don't have the photo you want, but if we divide the resolution by the pixel density we get the size:

iPad mini 7.9":
2048 by 1536 pixels, divided by 326 pixels per inch (ppi) =
= 6.28 in by 4.71 in = 29.58 in^2

iPhone 12 Pro Max 6.7":
2778 by 1284 pixels, divided by 458 pixels per inch (ppi) =
= 6.07 in by 2.80 in = 17.00 in^2

29.58 / 17.00 = 1.74
So the iPad mini has 74% more display area (and if we take the iPhone's notch into account, it's more than +74%).
And of course the iPad mini's 4:3 aspect ratio is better for productivity.

But if we want to watch a 16:9 video/movie*:
- iPad mini: we keep the width (6.28 in) and calculate the height = 6.28 in * 9 / 16 = 3.53 in
- iPhone 12 Pro Max: we keep the height (2.80 in) and calculate the width = 2.80 in * 16 / 9 = 4.98 in

So a 16:9 video/movie will have:
- iPad mini: 6.28 in by 3.53 in = 22.17 in^2
- iPhone 12 Pro Max: 4.98 in by 2.80 in = 13.94 in^2

22.17 / 13.94 = 1.59
So the 16:9 video/movie will be 59% bigger on the iPad mini.

*the black bars on the iPad mini will be on the height, while on the iPhone 12 Pro Max will be on the width.

"But: it's still big. I strongly recommend finding a way to safely see the 12 Pro Max's size in person before making a call on ordering one."

Bought a Pro Max case a while ago to gauge the size. Coming from the Pixel 3 and it's not too big for me but I wanted something large because I do a lot of reading on the cell. Thinking it isn't ALL that much bigger than the Pro.

Boy, I sure wish that the 12 Pro Max allowed for that 7th row of icons on the home screen.. with the newer iOS', I've moved to only having a home screen and the app library (downswipe, type for non-home screen items) and I wish I could fit 4 more icons in the *empty* space above the quick launch bar at bottom... Would make it even more perfect.

My Phone should fit my pocket and not require me to carry a purse or something...
My wife feels exactly the same way but as a guy whose jeans pockets easily fit the Pro Max, I've only used the largest screen size since it was introduced. I think what's great this year is there are three size options to choose from so that we can all be happy. Cheers!

Picture on the right (Pro) looks better while picture on the left (Pro Max) is a little brighter but not as sharp and colors are more flat. Looks like a tradeoff from different software processing.
