'iPhone 13' May Have a Smaller Notch

If the notch is required for FaceID, keep the notch. I absolutely love it. Given that the iPhone is the best selling premium phone and continues to drive record revenues and profits, it appears many are quite happy with the design.

I remember in 2011, apple was rumored to introduce an iPhone 5 with a 3.7 inch screen instead of a 3.5, a roundEd off teardrop design, an HD front facing camera, and LTE.
Instead, we got the iPhone 4S, with a faster processor, better camera, and Siri.
Then in 2012, we got the iPhone 5 with a four-inch screen, aluminum back, LTE, HD front camera, and all that jazz.
So yeah, next year we will probably have the same design as this year, but with a slightly smaller notch, MMWave across-the-board, 120 Hz on the pro models, and a possible removal of the charging port.
This is all pretty obvious. If you buy an iPhone 12, in a year there will be a better version.

That's the thing though: we're getting iteration after iteration after iteration, but when are we finally getting a head-turning revolutionary iPhone like the 4, the 6 and the X? You'd *think* Apple could afford to shorten the cadence with its immense talent pool, EBITDA and valuation, instead it's been grinding to a halt and we're getting news about TV+ shows instead.

I would not, I think it's my minor OCD, but when I see phones that have different size bezels for top, bottom and sides, it drives me insane. Just look at the new Galaxy S20 series, it has a forehead and a chin, but they are different sizes, why have either if you're going to put a hole punch camera in the screen anyway.

Agreed. It's not just that the notch is butt-ugly, but it reduces what can be shown in terms of status at the top of the screen. These days there is a lot to keep track off, and the notch precludes showing a persistent icon for VPN status for instance. The notch really is an arrangement of which Rube Goldberg would be proud. Why not make the phone slightly taller get rid of the damn notch, and use any additional uncommitted volume for a higher-capacity battery?

So instead of a notch add back the bezel? Maybe if iphone had the pixel 3 ‘notch hide’ feature it would satisfy this segment.

I have a forehead and a chin too. Are you coming after me? 🤣 🤣 🤣

I do think the screens with the hole punch camera look the worst.

that's not how apple does things. they dont do things because it's popular (for the most part!) they research and dev longer than most of the other companies because they have the extra resources... just look at the early 2k macs. they dropped the floppy disk drive and lots of people said "bad idea apple! we need floppy disks!" 10 years or so later most PCs didnt have floppy drives. apple was ahead of the curve on that. notch, well maybe they are trying to "perfect" (meaning make it work 99% of the time) those under glass bio techs for face or touch id before releasing to the public. just saying =)

Well, you just said it all. Apple did great things like removing floppy disks (that was an evolution) but on the notch Apple is clearly behind since others were able to get rid of it way before Apple. No, nobody will bring the notch back so Apple has evolved on that specific detail. "Trying to perfect" is BS. Nobody waits to perfect something before they launch it. Otherwise Apple wouldn't have launched iPhone 1 and waited to "perfect" it before launching. Notch is old news like bezels on Mac. Same with iPads where they were able to eliminate the bezel on the iPad Pro but kept it on lower priced models.

They could ditch faceID altogether for the smaller iPhone 12, and use the new fingerprint scanner on the button.

This would make me UNREASONABLY happy

All we know at the moment is that they will have higher numbers 😎
Because some people are superstitious, has anyone noticed any product recently where the number 13 was skipped?
 
I view the notch as a bezel with information on the left and right sides. IMO, it would have looked more visually appealing if that area's background was kept black and the information was in white, creating a screen with straight line across the top underneath the sensors. Shrinking the height of the notch is an interesting variation. But I'm surprised Apple hasn't yet worked out how to have the sensors and camera work under the screen, eliminating the notch entirely.
 
Hold hon! Let me grab some paper and pen, I want to become a prédicatif and announce iPhone 4 notch
 
As expensive as these devices have become, and reliable, I'll probably stick with my XS for another year and wait for the 13.
