I really wanted a USB C port on my iPhone, but now that the UK is saying its mandatory I really want Apple to go port-less.
You do know the UK voted to LEAVE the EU and are now their own United Kingdom right? Ironically this rule won’t apply to them!

Up to now only iPads with M-series and A_X/Z-series SoCs have 10 Gbps or faster USB-C ports whereas iPads with regular A-series SoCs have 5 Gbps or slower USB-C ports so I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone 15 Pro with A17 just gets a 5 Gbps USB-C port.
Or the iPhone Pro's will get a M-chip, and the standard phones will get an A-series chip.

We were all surprised when the iPad got the M1, now M2. It wouldn't surprise me if the iPhone Pro's got a binned M3 chip that used less power on the next gen TSMC fab process.

Portless will lead to a slower charging/data transfer speed. Don’t think that would be ideal.
No way Apple goes from lightning to port less. I could be wrong, but I imagine they go USB-C/Thunderbolt for at least a few years. Having no ports on a device with the video/photo capturing abilities just makes no sense. I think until wireless transfer speeds get substantially faster and there is a universal protocol (iPhone can wireless transfer to non-Apple products) then I see whatever port is the standard being on the iPhone from here out.

Just like how my M1 iPad Pro w/ TB only connects to my M1 Pro MacBook at 10 Gbps

People need to realize that USB-C != TB3 and also that USB-C is only, unfortunately, a form factor and we could well see slower speeds compared to other phones with USB-C. Depends what Apple puts behind that in terms of HW to be honest. And considering how Apple manages its supply chain efficiency, not holding my breath on this one.

I could care less about transfer speeds. It’s the universal cable to charge all of my products that I care about.

"Significant upgrade"

Only Apple can manage to spin "Updating 10 year old technology to existing standards" a significant upgrade. Anyone else would just call it, a natural update.

If they really use Thunderbolt 3 interface and chipset, that started shipping in late 2015/early 2016 to be honest. USB 3.2 is then from 2018/2019. USB-C on its own doesn't mean much to be honest.

You might not care about transfer speeds but do you care about speed of charging, safety of charging and how long your battery will last? As there's more to it then the form factor. That's definitely a benefit to users but it's not a holy grail and that's why the EU legislation has quite a few holes.

Hope Apple comes with a dongle. And sell it with big premium in EU. Only to set an example. For freedom, against mandates.

I do, so do a lot of people. I can't wait until I can charge everything in my backpack with the same cables, it makes life a lot easier
So you’re going to upgrade simpler for the usb c? Even if the iPhone 15 was exactly the same phone spec for spec you’d buy just for that? If so that’s fine, everyone has what’s important to them and it sounds like it makes sense for you, but most non-techies will probe be grumbling that Apple changed the charger “yet again” (ignoring the reality that it’s been like 10 years since the last change).

What I’m getting at is the port is not going to be the flagship feature that Apple focuses on to move product. It will be one bullet point, maybe a minute or two during the presentation…but then the actual selling points Apple wants to focus on.

I’m not saying it’s not going to make life easier, I was responding specifically to a poster who was speculating that this somehow rise to a main selling point.

After years of pushing wireless-everything, Apple will make a feature out of adding TB 3 speed to the wired connection on the pro model? Why?

Can't they just fix the embarrassing USB 2.0 speed issue on their phones, move to 3.x and call it a day - and not try to make a selling point out of their after-thought?
Wireless is the future. Really hope with get some upgrades to Airdrop and MagSafe

Who are we kidding? iPhone 15 Ultra should have the fastest wireless experience...fastest wireless charging...fastest wireless file transfer...wireless lossless audio for next generation AirPods Max. That puts the ultra in Ultra. 🤪
Ultra Price and Ultra Wait. Bet the wait will be until the 16 releases if you don't submit within 0.00000000000001s of orders opening

You make it sound like Apple is the only company with a marketing department. Anyone with a half decent marketing department would market new features as “revolutionary” and “The best thing since sliced bread,” regardless of how over the feature is. It’s just basic common sense sales tactics.

I don’t see the iPhone coming with a thunderbolt port. How is it to power certain thunderbolt devices that suck up to 15W of power ? If it does great, but usb3.2 10 gbps would be just fine as well. Way better than usb2.
It’d be useful in transferring 100s of GB of ProRes video to iPads or computers, thus the iPhone is the thunderbolt device for the larger device. It’d be on the receiving end, so no need for it to supply power. It wouldn’t use thunderbolt accessories, it’d be the thunderbolt accessory.

I care a lot about transfer speeds. I do most of my iOS updates via my Mac and only backup to my Mac, not to iCloud. I also transfer photos and videos over a cable frequently. It's a real pain if you ever need to move some files from a Windows computer over to an iPhone, last time I had to use a USB-C flash drive to copy the files to my iPad and then AirDrop it to iPhone.

But they could upgrade the lightning port on iPhones. There's even some Android phones on 2.0. But also some one 3.#

But they didn't. I think they tried with some iPad Pro and it didn't run very stable.

It also makes little sense to put in a lot of effort into further R&D when there's the USB3/c system that you can just integrate. And having a new phone outperform my Wii U in terms of transfer speed would be nice.

i always mess up those acronyms in my head, but yes, I meant EU law

No I hope they give turtle speed USB C to EU and India, but the thunder one to the rest of the world
ha, that would be better. ”The law states USB C, which supports USB 2.0 speeds, that’s what you get, since the rest of the world isn't mandating USB, we’ll give them thunderbolt 4.”
