Stupid question time: is there any technical reason why it'll be USB 2 and not 3+? Or is it just Apple just ******** on base models in order to upsell to higher end models?

Maybe the non-pro plebs get to buy a USB3 license on a subscription basis in the app store :)

Portless will lead to a slower charging/data transfer speed. Don’t think that would be ideal.
It’s still wifi is still faster than lightning. And 99%(source: made it up, but probably pretty close) of the users never use a cable to transfer. They could also create the pins (like iPad have for keyboard) into a special MagSafe connector that supports data transfer at thunderbolt speeds, and then charge a lot for the new MagSafe Data port.

Again, not something I want.

Thought they were going portliness?

At home I only wireless charge. I thought portliness would be fine until I remembered I use the plug my phone into my car for CarPlay as I don't have wireless CarPlay. I only used my port in the car so hang USB-C with or without thunderbolt sounds good to me.
They have wireless to usb CarPlay adapters that aren’t too expensive.

Who even use the USB-C for something than charging? Does it really matter...
i guess thunderbolt3 will unleashed something like the so called Samsung dex or motorola ready for Desktop UI but of course better

and then you need qi charging as it doesn't charge anymore over the cable. And then the phone overheats and you need an active cooling solution for your phone compartment.

much simpler to just plug-in the cable.

Plus, you can't do backups and itunes sync over wireless. Apple would need to develop the software first.

That's the one thing I liked and didn't like in my rental car. I was like where the heck is the port, but then tapped the screen and was oh this is wireless. But only needed it a day or two so never really hunted for other ports or the 12V jacks

Does Apple sell USB-C to USB-A cables? That is needed for Carplay, but last time I checked did not see any on Apple's site

They actually do. For a ridiculous amount of money though.

Wasn’t this yesterdays news? I never use the port anyways only for CarPlay. AirPlay is fast enough most people don’t shoot pro res
I just use little dongle for $70 and have wireless carplay. works excellent.

That's not from Apple tho :(
It's from the apple shop.

I highly doubt Apple makes their own cables. They probably buy in bulk and sell them under their own branding. At least some of them.

I also bought one of these overprized ones from the apple store when I got my iphone because I didn't want to wait for my aliexpress order to arrive in order to charge it and synchronize it. I think it was also branded from mophie and not apple. It was a bit spontaneous.
So basically the same situation with lightning and USB-C.

My ipad for example came with an apple branded cable and charger. Same for the Macbook, but that has MagSafe on the other end (which I really like).

Welcome to 2015 Apple! Maybe next you can work on a half decent iOS keyboard.

"Significant upgrade"

Only Apple can manage to spin "Updating 10 year old technology to existing standards" a significant upgrade. Anyone else would just call it, a natural update.

Media: "When you upgrading the port, Apple?"
Apple: "..."
Media: "iPhone 15 Pro rumored to feature a significant upgrade to the port!"
Apple: "..."
Forums: "Really Apple? You're going to call this a SIGNIFICANT UPGRADE?"
Apple: "..."

There is precedent for that kind of stuff. Back in the early Intel MacBook days, we had to pay to enable 802.11n wireless functionality, otherwise back down to .11b speeds if I remember correctly.

For those shooting and transferring lengthy video in 4K it's probably a big deal. I've been fine transferring with AirDrop. Set it to go, make some coffee. Done. I tend not to obsess about ports and notches, though I'm one of the few that still misses the audio jack. That was an "upgrade" that negatively affected my regular use of the device (boohoo!).
