I would be shocked if Apple released this any sooner than July 11th. I don't think they will give folks 2 weeks to play with Version 2 and realize that they don't really "need" the new iPhone.

I doubt this will happen. They'll wait until the app store is ready and do the firmware and app store at the same time. It'd be confusing for end users to have an app store icon but not be able to use it.

I was just about to make this point. That and you would think they would want MobileMe to also be ready since the 2.0 software has so many MobileMe integrated features. Those are probably activated through the service though, so maybe not. My guess is sources say the 2.0 software is ready, but some of its external features are not. Therefore the 2.0 software will come out later, unless Apple is trying to avoid overloading their customer service department who will be fielding all kinds of troubled calls. Then it might come out a few days earlier. Think about it...people will be calling in about the iPhone 3g, the 2.0 software on existing iPhones, MobileMe, and the appStore. That is quite a lot to launch on a single day, and we will probably end up looking back on this as being one of the key turning points in Apple's storied history.

Yeah!!!! Finally my scientific calculator!
Now if only someone could make a really awesome graphing program for it so I can replace my Ti-84, I have one installed but it is not perfect. ;)

So, has anyone heard anything about A2DP support in iPhone 2.0? Or have we all just given up on that? :)

It won't happen because white earphones are free advertising for Apple. You know immediately upon seeing one's white dangly bits that they have some form of iPod in their pocket.

I've given up on it. I would probably lose bluetooth headphones anyhow.

Ok, so im thinking its all getting to close. There are presumably thousands of i phone ready to go to the various shops in 20 odd countries, taking into account of shipping time i think the 2nd gen iphone may well be coming with v1 software, especially if V2 its not going to be even ready to install on the new phones till the 1st week of july!

Now that would be a mess!

Apple cannot afford to sell the iPhone 3G without 2.0 installed.

Since June 9th, Apple have marketed iPhone 3G as running 'iPhone OS 2.0'.
Releasing the device running 1.1.4 would, as stated, be a total PR nightmare.

If 2.0 hit's GM this Friday, that gives Apple - roughly~ 13 days and 15 hours - to install OS v2.0 onto the phones.
If they knew they couldn't do this within a two-week timeframe, they wouldn't of set the launch for 22 countries.

App store should surely have a virtual TI-84 in it. I wouldn't be surprised if TI themselves released this. Would make sense. They charge $40 for it vs. $85 for the unit itself (or whatever they cost now).

Gr8! Any chance MobileMe's also sometime near!!!

The 2.0 update even if obtained early somehow, I assume won't have Push until MobileMe is deployed, it maybe already is of course.

Off topic but related: I assume Apple are doing things with dot Mac in preparation for the move to MobileMe because my Mac Mail has been terrible these last few weeks. I can always receive but sending has been a bitch. Numerous friends have said the same thing both in USA and UK.

Has anyone got any more information on this?

oh and why shouldnt there be apps ready on the store we got demoed a half an hour worth of apps at wwdc:rolleyes:

Man I'm buying the music instrument app. I don't care if its $30, that thing would keep me entertained forever. That and Super Monkey Ball will probably be my first purchases. I can see this getting expensive quick. There are going to be so many great programs in the next few months alone.

TUAW reported some outages the other day. Apparently they are switching over all their systems because Apple is aware of the problem and isn't giving any specific answers, like always.

Exchange / Enterprise Support

Does anyone understand how Exchange support is going to work? I'm a bit confused by ATT stuff what suggests that once the 3G iPhone is out, you'll need their $45/month Business Data Plan to use Exchange over 3G.

Since Firmware 2.0 enables Exchange support for the 2G iPhone AND the iPod Touch, does this mean that one can use it over WiFi only (either Touch or iPhone) and not pay for the ATT Data plan to get it over 3G?

Clearly if there is Exchange support for the iPod Touch, it has to be implemented over WiFi. Any thoughts on if this will be disabled on the 3G iPhone unless you pay for the more expensive Data plan too?

Thanks

How about this, you wait until early July, and you include copy and paste. Please?

Please please please Apple!!!

My two most important features to be implemented:

1. Exchange support (I hate having to use webmail, and it only works on my laptop, not my Touch).

2. Copy and Paste.

I can almost live without #2, but there are situations where I am left hanging high and dry without it. I simply cannot memorize certain things and re-type them in another app... addresses for Google Maps come to mind.

I highly doubt that the GM build of iPhone OS 2 will be "blessed" and publicly released in the same day. First it has to be distributed to all the developers and screened for any critical showstoppers that may emerge (not with the ROM image itself, as that is theoretically finalized, but with the upgrade procedure). I also doubt that it will be released if the App store is not finished--there is an "Installer.app" equivalent on OS 2.0 and Apple isn't going to have that hanging around functionless, even if it only for 2 weeks.

One thing that I do wonder, however, is: how are the 3G phones going to have OS 2.0 on them? Apple already began shipping them from production plants a little while back, right? Thus, I assume that the packaging, et al, is already final. If they haven't already started assembling and shipping them by now, then it is far too late--they won't have many of them available on 11 July 08.

financial impact of 2.0

While I don't believe that Apple will release iphone 2.0 before July 11th, there is a definite financial impact of them releasing it in June as they have said they will not recognize iPhone sales since Feb SDK release until 2.0 is released - this is some weird accounting thing that was mentioned on their last investor conference call. Anyway, if they release the software before the end of June they can recognize all of those iPhone sales in this quarter. Also, as I imagine they will be distributing the new iPhone in the first week or two of July to reviewers (Mossberg, etc.), it seems to make sense that they would want to have those reviewers to be able to review the phones with all the new features that 2.0 offers. Like I said, it would be a nice surprise and there are definitely reasons to support an earlier release, but I am still skeptical...

Not going to happen. Some parts of mobileme are integrated with iPhone 2.0, such as posting photos, so that means waiting for mobileme to be ready. That in turn means we need 10.4.5 to he ready. They won't/can't wait 'til 2.0.1 for the app store, so that needs to be ready. I imagine the app store in iTunes will only work with the new iTunes, so that also needs to he ready.

I'm not saying that I doubt iPhone 2.0 won't be GM by Friday, but I heavily doubt that we'll get our grubby hands on it until all these things are ready.

2.0 will be installed, but it will be an early version. They could not install the Final version, install it on all of the 3G iPhones they have been shipping to their distribution warehouses, and have them ready in time for July 11.
So, I believe they could release ver 2.0 sometime before July 11 in order to cut down on overloading their download servers, and generating an overload on their Support ALL on the same day for everyone worldwide.

Think.... Logistics

Screening for any critical showstoppers, by definition, was done before Golden Master declaration.

Wow. Just wow. Ok everyone, listen up. Some guy named Steve Jobs said that there is this thing called iPhone 3g coming out on July 11th. He said it will come with software version 2.0, among other new features. I know this is a rumor site and all, but the HEAD OF APPLE stated this information as fact, so can we stop debating it? I mean, it doesn't really get much more pointless than this. iPhone 3g will come out on July 11th. It will have a GPS unit. It will not have a front facing camera. It will have the same 2 megapixel camera. It will have 3g. It will have slightly better battery life. It will come in 8gb / 16gb versions, with the 16gb one having the choice of a black or white back. That back will also be plastic and have metal buttons on the side and be slightly thicker with tapered edges. It will cost $199/299 for the 8gb and 16gb versions with a 2 year contract on AT&T. It will have the Apps Store icon to purchase 3rd party apps developed by the iPhone SDK. And lastly, it will have iPhone software 2.0, or else none of those hardware / software features would even work!! Sorry to spell it all out in such long detail, but those are all the facts as told by the guy who knows all the secrets--Steve Jobs. I guess some people here apparently needed to know that all of this is true and not speculation.

An excellent point. (I'd be happy if they'd just re-introduce the bug from 1.1.2(?) that mistakenly let you route the phone's audio to a BT headset so I could listen to podcasts on the way to work.)

I probably shouldn't hold my breath for voice dialing software, either. Yeah, Makayama has an app for jailbroken phones, but apparently it's not very good and no one seems to say if it works with BT headsets, which makes me assume the answer is no. Yay.

Of course, Apple's had voice recognition software since the Centris 660av in 1993, but they couldn't actually, you know, USE it in one of their products.

I think its very plausible that the AppStore be delayed, considering devs haven't even got a final SDK yet (we're at beta 7).

It would be trivial to turn off the icon in the 2.0 firmware until 2.0.1 comes along and turns it back on for the opening of the store.
