I'm a PC and Mac Fan! Love the iPhone and can't wait for what tomorrow has in store.

Because it's sold to everyone, I'd bet that half of current iPhone owners use PCs, just as probably most iPod users are on PCs. (Anyone with actual stats is welcome to respond.)

Atleast the iphone gets updates regularly, unlike Windows Mobile. It seems like the iphone update cycle is way more consistent than other mobile os's.

That's mostly because the iPhone has NEEDED more updates. It's still a very young system in comparison to any other, and is missing a lot of functionality. Just look at what the updates were for: things that other devices already do. Almost every update has had security patches, as well.

(Actually, I think the Storm has gotten even more updates than the iPhone.)

NAND has a limited number of read/write cycles. it would kill the iPhone to use the NAND memory as RAM.

umm.. i still don't get why jail-broken iphone can do video just fine and the professionals at Apple cant do the same thing

Because the jail-break folks don't supply a *warranty* for the hardware that Video recording would wear out faster. The limited write-cycles on flash memory are what makes officially supported video recording on the existing models of iPhone a non-starter for Apple.

I agree. My other phones had video recording and i never used it. Total waste of space being the quality was so poor.

of course the quality is not the best (but definitely sufficient for its purpose), but there have been situation were i was very happy to have the option to record what was happening. many funny vids have been made in such situations.

it's allways the same here, just because "YOU" don't need these features, it's not like the rest of us feels the same.

Mms

I don't care about MMS because I am not 13 years old.

When I want to send naked pictures of myself from my iPhone, I use email.

First of all I don't trust a thing Kevin Rose says. He's like a Jesse Jackson to me...always has something to say.

I'm so easy to please: all I want from 3.0 is YouTube uninstalled! If I want it I'll download it!

That's a productive wish, isn't it? Let me then recommend you a… Motofone! Quite the thing for you, mate! Here you have it: http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details.jsp?globalObjectId=164 . I am confident you could afford it if you save up for diligently.

Hey, this is really cool. Take a look at this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_OS_version_history

I read through all the version changes. Apple has done a lot for us and we still sound very ungrateful. Also, anyone notice how 2.2.1 is running very smoothly and almost bug free? Just in time for another bug riddled 3.0 eh?

3.0.1: Improves Safari's stability, fixes issue where camera takes corrupt photos, ehances 3G reception, performance and bug fixes

3.0.2: Fixes issue where the SpringBoard may stop responding after closing the iPod popup controls, performance increase, bug fixes.

3.0.3: Reduces Safari crashes and keyboard lag.

3.1: New calculator!

Spoiler Free link again?

Is macrumors going to have a spoiler-free page for this again? I'd like to watch it without knowing the new features ahead of time.

Thanks!

2.0 came out 5 months after 1.1.4. Wow! I bet we'll be stuck with 2.2.1 until July! By the way... 2.2.1 came out Jan. 27th.

Oh, now it makes sense! I guess all the other manufacturers, who have been providing video capabilities for a while now, just don't care about their hardware or their customers....

You were kidding, right?

Lets get this straight once and for all!

The iphone 3.0 SDK preview WILL NOT have multi-tasking and or background apps. Nor will it have video. All it is going to have is cut & paste and a few other colorful but ultimately meaningless little tidbits apple will use to patronize iphone 1 and iphone 3G users.

Face it. The iphone first gen and iphone 3G are just not powerful enough for multi-tasking and video. So current iphone owners ARE SCREWED!

You all are just going to have to wait till June for the iphone 3.0 and all of its advanced hardware goodness if you want multi-tasking, video and other actually cool stuff. Your going to HAVE TO BUY the new iphone 3.0 if you want all of the incredible new features.

So to bottomline it: all you grandmas and grandpas out there with iphone 1.0s or iphone 3Gs are SCREWED. Did I mentioned y'all SCREWED?
HAHA SUCKAS!!!! :D

Long live the iphone 3.0!!!

I disagree. The iPhone 3.0 firmware *will* be available for all iPhones. Why would they show off 3.0 features and then when June comes say "Oh, sorry... did you actually think you were going to be able to run this new OS?"

You don't make any sense at all. Apple wouldn't just cease OS support on all their current customers for a new phone.

It's because most phones don't use NAND chips. These aren't hot swappable. Maybe the Jailbreakers are actually harming their iPhones and shortening the life of them. I however, don't wanna be a part of that group. Thanks anyway.

.

just because the 3.0 OS will *probably* run on older iphones, it must not mean that, consequently, all "iphone 3.0 (2,1?)" features will be avaible for older models aswell?!

You don't even know what Apple's implementation of background app is going to be, so to "bottomline it" you have no idea.

The current iPhone hardware is plenty powerful. I'm willing to bet Apple will put a limitation on the types and number of background processes they will allow. I highly doubt they would limit a feature like that to new hardware.

Example of a feature that could be in a firmware update that a current iPhone 3G cannot use? I know the original iPhone can't do 3G or GPS, but it has GPS-like location awareness and Edge. Other than that, both iPhones are almost identical in terms of speed and memory.

Not only that, but they would make the millions of people who own an iPhone right now very angry. It kinda sucks that we were told Push was coming and some people may have even bought the iPhone 3G thinking that push was going to be available soon after they bought it.... or else they could have bought a Blackberry that supports 24/7 AIM and background apps.

Unless there are serious changes to the 3.0 software tomorrow, I plan to buy the new iPhone the day it is released.

Once I buy the new iPhone, I may consider using my iPhone 3G with another carrier and Jailbreak it. I have thought that I could use the Jailbroken iPhone with a much better carrier for much more reliable service. I know a guy who has TMobile and never drops a call, I cannot say that as an AT&T subscriber.

In addition, his jailbroken iPhone DOES EVERYTHING we all want. It does video. It does copy paste. It does Internet that is faster. It still does wifi and everything normal too. It changes the whole way the phone is limited due to I guess carrier restrictions. He has his set to tether on his TMobile service and doesn't pay a penny more for it. All the data is included too in his one price plan. AND, get this his whole plan with voice and data and everything is less than $90 per month including TAXES. I don't know about you all, but my iPhone bill is $150 per month... and that is not maxed out on minutes. It is the 1350 minute plan, with SMS, and iPhone Data.

I want the fun of Jailbreaking, but I need the reliability of a working phone too. I sold my original iPhone for $350 around Christmas time for some extra presents for the kids. I am NOT going to sell my iPhone 3G once I buy the iPhone v3. This jailbreaking sounds like too much fun.

But, maybe Apple will surprise us all tomorrow, but somehow I doubt it. We should probably be happy to just be able to get the features by buying the new hardware iPhone v3. Obviously Apple is in this to sell iPhones anyways and not just give away free software. That is why upgrades are usually going to be hardware specific.

My opinions only.

Ok. I'll grant you that idea is credible. Then that would mean they MIGHT and again I say MIGHT allow limited background apps as a firmware update for the older model iphones.
But if they intend on catching up and hopefully surpassing the Palm Pre's WebOS they had better have full multi-tasking for the iphone 3.0 or Apple will NO LONGER be the cell phone tech leader.

If Apple is only going to allow limited background apps as a firmware update then this Tuesday Apple HAS TO give the impression that in June the iphone 3.0 will have MUCH MORE capabilities including FULL MULTI-TASKING. Its either that or Apple will end up allowing the Palm Pre to be more successful than they want it to be.

i just wanted to state that, for example, if apple implements the video function for the new iphone, why "must" that be avaible for older iphone models too?

take vista for example. if your pc is not too powerfull, "aero" (or whatever that feature with the windows "flipping" is called) is disabled. Conclusion: this feature is not bound to the OS, but to your hardware.... (and now please don't say:: uuuh thats microsoft.... )

Every other smart phone to come out claiming to be an "iPhone killer" has still failed. The Palm Pre will be no different. Apple is smart, they're definitely doing something right with the iPhone.
