Lets get this straight once and for all!

The iphone 3.0 SDK preview WILL NOT have multi-tasking and or background apps. Nor will it have video. All it is going to have is cut & paste and a few other colorful but ultimately meaningless little tidbits apple will use to patronize iphone 1 and iphone 3G users.

Nope. New SDK means new developer features. Copy and paste isn't a developer feature, that's something you get "for free" with the Cocoa controls. Push notifications, for example, is a developer feature.

Face it. The iphone first gen and iphone 3G is just not powerful enough for multi-tasking and video. So current iphone owners ARE SCREWED!

You all are just going to have to wait till June for the iphone 3.0 and all of its advanced hardware goodness if you want multi-tasking, video and other actually cool stuff. Your going to HAVE TO BUY the new iphone 3.0 if you want all of the incredible new features.

So to bottomline it: all you grandmas and grandpas out there with iphone 1.0s or iphone 3Gs are SCREWED. Did I mentioned y'all SCREWED?
HAHA SUCKAS!!!! :D

Long live the iphone 3.0!!!

Doubt it. We're still Apple customers, and they're still getting money from us due to their delayed accounting scheme. Phones are unlike other products in that people are tied to contracts, and hence are unlikely to switch for every new version.

Apple's customer satisfaction surveys are so high its crazy. They're confident that people won't switch from an iPhone to another device, they'll switch to the next iPhone. It doesn't make sense to strongarm people in to doing what they were going to do anyway out of choice.

Every other smart phone to come out claiming to be an "iPhone killer" has still failed. The Palm Pre will be no different. Apple is smart, they're definitely doing something right with the iPhone.

All the companies in the world are not all Microsoft. A team lead by Jon Rubenstein and other Apple defectors? C'mon! Did you not see the Palm Pre Keynote? That thing is going to make money period. How successful the Pre will be is going to be (ironically) determined tomorrow.

Ahhhhhhhhhh baby Apple had better "bring it" now! Nothing like pressure to encourage one to actually innovate.

I saw the Palm Pre keynote. I heard "applications written in Javascript." Last time I heard that was when Steve Jobs announced that the "sweet new way" to write apps was to point Safari to webpages. We all see how well THAT went over.

As far as I'm concerned Palm is too late to the game, and Apple will stay ahead. Don't worry, Palm will sell their little phone but, Apple will be the one's innovating.

Understood. But just like Apple eventually did I expect them to quickly change things because I'm way wayyy certain they want to have a broad app selection as quickly as possible.

Ok. I'll grant you that idea is credible. Then that would mean they MIGHT and again I say MIGHT allow limited background apps as a firmware update for the older model iphones.
But if they intend on catching up and hopefully surpassing the Palm Pre's WebOS they had better have full multi-tasking for the iphone 3.0 or Apple will NO LONGER be the cell phone tech leader.

If Apple is only going to allow limited background apps as a firmware update then this Tuesday Apple HAS TO give the impression that in June the iphone 3.0 will have MUCH MORE capabilities including FULL MULTI-TASKING. Its either that or Apple will end up allowing the Palm Pre to be more successful than they want it to be.

Would you mind stopping with the bold and all-caps stuff? thanks.

Why exactly does someone need full multi-tasking in a 3.5" screen? My iPhone is jailbroken and I played around with lots of whacky apps before the app store was out, so I tried out a bunch of instant messaging apps. For this kind of apps, push would be much better for the mobile network and the device's battery life. If you need to switch between multiple apps, just hit the home button and open the other app, then switch again. Most apps start right where you left off, at least they're supposed to.
As long as I can listen to music, audio books or podcast while doing other things with my iPhone, I'm a happy guy. Then again, to me the iPhone is more like an iPod I can make calls and send SMS with and has a decent calendar and address book that sync perfectly with my Mac.

Tomorrow has two pretty good scenarios in my mind.

Either,
3.0 = variety of enhancements to current iPhone/iPod touch OS generation.

Or

3.0 = leap in software OS based on new hardware capabilities (aka preview of new iPhone tomorrow as well).

If the latter then hopefully multiple versions of 3.0 to include the former.

As I see it, a win win.

Every other smart phone to come out claiming to be an "iPhone killer" has still failed.

I've never seen a company claim that. It's always the sites that are drumming up traffic.

As we've said before, there's no need for killers if Apple keeps screwing themselves.

Apple itself doesn't sell to loyal Verizon or Sprint customers, so the iPhone is non-starter anyway in that case.

Other phones are also selling quite nicely. The Storm is apparently selling almost as well as the iPhone, and the various HTC models are sold by nearly every carrier around.

I saw the Palm Pre keynote. I heard "applications written in Javascript." Last time I heard that was when Steve Jobs announced that the "sweet new way" to write apps was to point Safari to webpages. We all see how well THAT went over.

That's because those were remote webpages. A far cry from local apps with local system access.

Thats one of the things that's been on my mind with all this talk of new features. If copy and paste is added why bring developers. But, also rumored was more control of the springboard. The addition of the ability to screw with the springboard a little bit more could be the reason. Maybe backgrounds, categories, or something else?

It's because most phones don't use NAND chips. These aren't hot swappable. Maybe the Jailbreakers are actually harming their iPhones and shortening the life of them. I however, don't wanna be a part of that group. Thanks anyway.

The iPhone wouldn't have this problem if they were using SRAM/EDRAM... Plus the transfer speeds would be stupid quick. Of course the device would be hella expensive.

I prefer the underdog because they are under the most pressure to perform as opposed to the big guy.
But, I'll take whichever is the most advanced product. Ultimately, I don't care which company it comes from.

Troll or not you guys will not find true multi-tasking for your current iphones. Its just not going to happen. Maybe they will add a few background apps. That way you won't get knocked out of an app if a phone call comes in. But thats it.
Oh, and that firmware update you all are waiting on for video..........sorry but its not happening either. You can call me whatever you want and stamp on your keyboards multiple times and cry and scream till the neighbor knocks on your door.

Its not going to change reality. Prepare to be dissapointed tomorrow.

I, also, believe push is not just an alternative but superior to actual backgrounding, given battery life. This is unfortunate for radio apps, but all Radio apps should simply take advantage of the background ability of QuickTime via Safari, ie: FlyCast radio app.

Good Stuff.

Still, it is funny to see how much drama has been caused by the simple feature of 'copy and paste'...

If that were a sentence I'd ask you to defend it. How did Apple innovate? Safari? That's it. Everything else has already been done in phones. Apple just brought the smart phone to the masses.

Bold mine. Some see that as innovation in itself.

Keynote

Is there gonna be a Keynote?
'Cause I wanted to see the video without knowing the outcome, that whole spiolier-free thing MacRumors did with Macworld & Co.

Yeah, I asked for this too. I'm sure there will be a video, why would they give up such a free marketing tool?

I agree with most of you. Copy and paste is nice but hardly worth all the excitement.

Here's what I would be excited about:

Push notifications (obviously)

Ability to switch between apps like apple+tab does in osx. I see no reason why the iphone can't do with 512mb of ram what the palm pre does with 256mbs of ram.

Better mobile me across the board (sync notes, tasks, idisk access)

A week view in Calendar app (it drives me nuts that i can't look at my entire week and see when i'm free)

I really like the Pre's little news feed at the bottom and the conversation stream with all your social networks in one.

Redesigned dock (allow more apps on the bottom, dock should always be accessible with hiding (like in osx)

Pictures of people in contacts list, also added info pulled from social networks (facebook, myspace etc)

Come on apple! :)
The iPhone does not have 512mb. I believe it has 128mb. The Palm Pre has 192mb (could be wrong on this)

32 GB NAD Chips?

Let me make sure I understand this.

Copy and Paste? Check.

MMS? Nope.

Video? Nope.

Background Apps? Nope.

So where on earth is the "+more" part?

Seems like he is saying all the rumored stuff is NOT coming to the new firmware.

I mean, they surely are not going to go from 2.2 to 3.0 and only bring Copy and friggin Paste to the table?

Right?
IT seems like everyone is forgetting about the 32GB Chips?

Wait! I know how copy and paste is going to work! I figured it out just now.

Here are the easy to learn steps to copy and paste.

1. Take a screenshot by pressing sleep and home button together
2. Email the screenshot to copyandpaste@apple.com
3. Use MobileMe to get the reply instantly!
4. Click the link in the email to open a web page with your deciphered text on it

To paste:

1. Take a screenshot of that webpage.......
2. Repeat steps 2-4.

Easy as pie! ;)
