As for 8GB vs 16GB, I have a first-gen 8GB and have found I use it for a lot more video than I would have thought I would. As a result, I tend to have ~4GB music, some music videos, a few gigs for video (podcasts,TV,movies), and a small amount left over for photos and "other". I'm always close to full, yet don't hit the limit that often. As long as you don't feel the need to have the entire series of whatever you are watching, but instead just have a few episodes, and generally only 1 movie at a time at most (mine tend to range ~700MB-1.3GB), you can stick under 8GB fine.

I control my music via smart playlists, so if I decide I need extra space for podcasts/videos etc I can reduce my music allocation very easily by just reducing the max size of one playlist, and this removes some recently played songs, yet leaves all my favourite songs still on the phone (they have a separate playlist). Even if you have selected a specific playlist for your phone (or have your entire library if it is small enough), I recommend wrapping it in a smart playlist like this, as it is very convenient for being able to temporarily reduce your music without actually changing the underlying playlist.

Jailbreak apps are pretty damn small (most are <1MB), and I presume the new apps will be similar, though there may be some cool App Store app that requires lots of space to store stuff, who knows.

adamerr, get the 16gb.

You're most likely going to be tied into a contract for the next 12 - 24 months, that's a long time to be wishing you had more space. It's better to have the extra space and not need it, than need it and not have it.

As for headphones/file size, I have a pair of sehnheiser headphones that I take everywhere. They're black so it's less obvious I have an ipod, they sound great but more importantly they block out external noise. The obvious benefit of this is that I can't hear conversations around me, but the far greater benefit is that I don't need to blast the volume to drown out external noise. I have my volume limit set a few notches under halfway and would never dream of going louder, it would hurt my ears for sure. I strongly believe that the reason people blast their ipods so loud is due to the poor quality of the standard headphones. I only use mine for running, as the sehnheiser's tend to get a bit tangled.

Oh, and I rip all my mp3's at 220 VBR or around there. Any more is overkill and any less starts to degrade in sound quality to my ears - although I am a musician so I'm a bit pickier than most.

EDIT: BTW this weekend I will be playing with my new 16gb 3G iPhone. Just thought I'd let you all know.

I have black ssehnheiser's to! I love them:D

I hope i will have a iPhone (8gb;)) this weekend, but it all comes down to if telstra will let me upgrade my hiptop!

I think I read in the Optus T & C's that existing customers are eligible to upgrade as long as they can demonstrate that they have paid equal or more than the plan they are hoping to use for the iphone over the last 3 months.

Here's hoping Vodafone and Telstra implement a similar policy.

Hurry up Vodafone!

When are we going to see the plans and pricing from Vodafone?
Only four days left...

I am wanting to go with Vodafone, but I need to know what I am up for.
Anyone else wanting Vodafone to hurry up?

I dont really understand that, I think so far I have paid about $810 ($45 per month for the last 18 months)

Vodafone NZ doesn't plan to announce pricing until Friday

I don't know whether Australia will be the same though.

Update: Pricing will be announced tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10 am local time. Handsets will start at $199.

From my interpretation, that means you've consistently paid $45 for the last three months so you'd be fine to upgrade to a plan around that amount.

I could be mis-interpreting.

Wow that's scary. I can imagine the people in Auckland, Wellington and Chch lined up outside the Vodafone shops to buy one at midnight, only to go in, be told how much they are, and then turn on their heels and walk out...

Well, maybe that won't happen, but I'd laugh if it did...

Nah, you're on your own there buddy. We're all going Optus :)

Jokes aside, I'm certain we'll have them by mid week, my bet's on Wednesday.

Really? Why has everyone chosen Optus?
Seems a bit dodgy to me that we can't pay an upfront cost like with Telstra and every other country. I would rather that, than be paying off the phone each month.

i am or was on vodafone untill i sold my iPhone for $702 on ebay:D using the $29 jumbo prepaid cap ($130 calls no data) and that did the job, but they have crap coverage out of big-ish cities and no 3G outside of Melbourne (im in Ballarat) so i will be going to optus or... telstra:eek: just for the 3G ness, but i want optus to have a $39 cap plan with like $230 of calls and text with 500mb.

And if i go 24months can i upgrade to the new iPhone Next year, has anybody checked that? if not i can

shmeh.
im set on optus now anyway.
i dont really mind if vodafone release their plans now.

*unless they are cheaper by like $100*

Vodafone NZ have said that NZ pricing plans will be announce at 10am tomorrow. Surely your Aussie ones will be announced at about the same time.

Oh, and VNZ have said that the handset price will start from NZ$199 on a 2 year term.

I've been told by Vodafone consultants that they'll be calling us with details of the pricing. I wonder if that's before or after the general announcement.

If after - why bother?

wouldnt matter if they did.
im with optus now :D

ah pre-paid...

Vodafone's pricing will come with NZ's pricing. It would be the same people making the pricing and we would have similar prices due to our currency being so close (kind of) and Apple not having to ship the phones much more of a distance to reach Australia and New Zealand. We are close in time zones as well.
